Nothing to do with the game, but Garry Lion mentioned this week that Mitchell and Clarko don’t like each other. He’s mates with Clarko so I’ll take it as fact.

I must’ve been living under a rock because that was news to me.

Does it stem from Mitchell taking over as coach, or something else? Mitchell seems like a smug little fella with a punchable head so I’m not surprised, just curious??
There was talk during his playing days that even Mitchell's team mates didn't like him. No idea if true or not.

These "succession plans" can often lead to issues too. It seemed to work with Roos/Longmire and Roos/Goodwin. Others have gotten messy.

Everyone who is going has checked the train line disruptions? Travelling in from the east is a bit of a mess this weekend.
Gawd looks like bus from Camberwell to city, arghhh

Super worried that hawks will get a run on, heads will drop and we will just let them walk all over us
I'm not even considering that as an option. I'm pretty ECO but not demoralized, and the idea that our players will mentally fold like a pack of cards in their best opportunity for a win so far this year is unthinkable to me. We'll make skill errors, decision errors, some blokes will do outright stupid things, we'll panic occasionally, and we might take way too long to make changes on the field, but I just don't think we're going to see us mentally implode if there's a 10 minute period where nothing goes right. Like I said earlier, unless we're oodles of goals down at 3/4 we're in with a chance. Hawks are at our level.

Long time ago I heard that in the middle of his career Mitchell became pretty aloof. A complete pro, but his team mates were colleagues and not necessarily friends, he had little interest in making new friends with the kids that were coming in.

The succession plan was just messy. More Kennett meddling rather than Mitchell backstabbing, but at the end of the day there were two alpha males trying to run the same team with one on the way in and one on the way out. It's hard.

Only part I'm not sure how true it is, is that Clarko felt betrayed by Mitchel when the hawthorn racism scandal erupted. Had read that here and there, but there was a lot of shit going down and a lot of bullshit posted everywhere.

What I can smell is Ginnivan getting heading a head high free kick in the siren to win
Perfect opportunity for the maggots to give him a great run today to say look we don’t treat him differently.

There’s no backlash if it’s against North, so don’t be surprised if he gets a few early and then he goes into overdrive knowing today is the day they give him licence to duck.

Hawks rinsed us twice last year, simply because they can hit targets, and we aren't quick, strong or smart enough to get the ball back, so they kept possession for large swathes of the game. Whether that happens again (qnd if we actually employ any tactics today) is a big watch for me.

Ginnivan will kick at least 4 just from frees against the dumbest defenders in the league so we'll be up against it ... please just fight it out North.

Love the optimism and hope we get up but I'm also a realist, if there is one game this mob get up for its against Clarko.

They still have some weapons, Newcombe will body us, Amon has a history of dominating us and is in solid form and Sicily will take 8+ marks. Can also see Chol getting off the chain. Hawks by 30. Ill be there to cheer em on, I just hope we can compete for most of the game before they blow us away.

There was also the stuff in Mitchell's book about him feeling that Clarko pressured him to prioritise footy over family

My footy tips are sitting on a big fat zero so far, but i still think we win this one, even put $10 on Sellers for 1st goal @ $41 :)
I would be sitting on zero too except I forgot to even put mine in.

Oh well. It’s that kind of season.

Just don’t let the hawks chip around the wings unattended like last years game.

Bring the *en pressure
That’s all I’ve been asking for the past few weeks …
But apparently it’s not a coach motivation issue that we are not bringing it….. GGF

The optimist in me says our two worst performances of the year have both been on grounds that are like bowling alleys, so hopefully our game stacks up better against weaker opposition at Marvel?

The midfield will be key to this game and if we let Newcombe and Worpel do as they please we are going to be in for a long day.

The first time we played hawthorn last year they took 140 marks to 89. They played keepings off, with 1.85 kicks per handball, with 74 more kicks than us. A lot of those were short, lateral passes.

The second time the hawthorn marks were 89 to our 107, and kicks were pretty even. They handballed more than kicked. Tactically was a different game.

Interesting to see what each coach tries to do today - both should just go out and try to win the midfield. Newcombe got brownlow votes in both games, we have to stop him.

My smoky prediction is for Will Phillips to have his best game for us today. Maybe even use him in a tagging/run with role.

Negate these two things and I'll be confident of winning.

1. Have coverage in the midfield when we lose possession. Teams running forward of the footy kill us. Hawthorn will defs be looking to exploit this.

2. Someone be accountable for Sicily or we all know what's coming.
2 points you can prob bet your house on. Trouble.
