One of the things that comes out of this discussion and NTUS talk is not only did the club do a good job but the AOSMA - got the right sound engineers and paid for the right PA system. Whilst at times a little loud the sound system is fantastic.

After the first strikers game on NYE they had a half hour concert led by the blonde rock chick who did ok in the first series of the Voice. I stuck around to hear what the sound system was like in the Riverbank Stand. I gave it the tick that night and the eastern stand sounded pretty good to me.

I know the conversation has moved on well past this point, but wanted to give my two cents. For those that don't know, I'm an acoustic engineer, and this kind of thing always interests me. Two of the engineering firms on the project (Arup and AECOM) are imo, the two best global acoustic companies, and one of them is probably top 3 in Australia (disclaimer: I happen to work for one of them, and it was the other one who did the sound engineering for this project). There are other good local companies, but for global reach and expertise, they are the best. I think that having these two companies on board made sure we got the best outcome from the sound system. My parents were full of praise for the sound system, in terms of good speech clarity, and great volume.

It also helps a lot that it was a stadium rebuild. The sound system at Football Park was upgraded a few years back, and because the stadium itself is not conducive to good sound quality, it's pretty tough to produce good quality sound with just speakers. Building a new stadium allows them to incorporate the right absorption materials and diffraction objects in the right places to produce high clarity sound. I don't know too much about the new stadium, but I have a general idea about how it would have been done, and props to engineering team for doing a great job.

It's worth noting that here in the North America, there is so little care provided to acoustics that news articles like these are the norm for new stadiums. Something that we are doing our damnedest to change.

They were the engineers that worked on on the Sydney Opera House and couldn't crack Utzon's shapes for 3 years- until Utzon got a brain wave from peeling an Orange and realised he could make the shapes by slicing up a sphere.

Obviously off topic but in your studies or professional dealings have you ever read about that Utzon tried to work out the acoustic for the internal "shells" of the Opera House and one day either on the harbour or at one of Sydney's beaches thought about how the sunlight bounces off waves and thought that that sort of shape would be the right one for the Opera House - but obviously like an upside wave as the sound wave was travelling up but the sunlight was travelling down?? He sent off all his workings to a specialist acoustic firm in Germany, but just before or just after the report was finished he resigned/was sacked and as the report was in German nobody read it. The next architects went on and built it their way and the acoustics aren't as great as they could be. Years later someone dug up the report as some sort of exhibition was being put together of old documents - got it translated and the report said Utzon's idea would have resulted in near perfect pitch/acoustics.

Hey REH, Arup is a UK firm, but has people all over Australia.

As for Utzon, I don't know too much about that. Specialist space design is a very challenging and interesting field, and to be honest, not one of the areas that I specialise in. I know a little, but I certainly work with people who know a whole lot more about it.

Instead go for something already existing that represents us, our attitude, and our pride in the club.

It also has to be slow enough but not to slow for people to actually sing along.

Rudimental very meh. I think they could of played just ok beiber and we still wouldn't of cared since we were all so pumped. Not a fan at all of this style of song.

I was very impressed with never tear is apart. I've never been a fan of INXS but for some reason that fitted well. As said before it reminded me of Liverpool.

No bloody lyrics! Learn the words in your own time. Unless it's a little David Koch head jumping on the relevant words then no thanks.


On a side note bloody hell port nailed it with this side of things.

Loved it on the day and that video just gave me chills.

The never tear us apart theme is just so perfect in so many ways. I found myself singing along and laughing at how perfectly it trumped and mocked the Crows chant night.

I love the fact we kept the build up pretty low key and let the fans and the football speak fir itself rather than the desperate over the top try hard extravaganza you just know the Crows are planning to try and paper over their innept club, players and fans.

The hell with providing the words. Now that 40K of us are aware this is our unofficial anthem we will belt out the words for the Brisbane game and every game after that. Any fans who weren't there on Saturday and want to get involved will pick it up pretty quickly (as pointed out its hardly an unheard song).

Providing words and a karaoke style bouncing ball is manufactured passion and something probably more attributed to that other mob.

I came across from Melbourne for the match on Saturday...loved both Not Giving In and Never Tear Us Apart...absolutely spot on for the occasion and you could feel the faithful take instantly to each. The spontaneous stadium-wide clapping in time to NGI as people grabbed the significance from that first verse was beautiful.

Then Never Tear Us Apart before the bounce...awesome. Its significance is many layered and probably means different things to different people, but what roladexed through my head while watching was the following:

The PAd faithful, who endured and kept turning up through some very dark days.
Our defiance of SA footy establishment, their segregation of our two identities and attempts to bleed us dry.
Our hard-won independence (as the culmination of so much hard work, and blood, tears, resignations and sackings)
The closeness of the current group of players.

Never ****ing tear us apart.

Won't be there for the next home game, but I for one, would very much like to belt out that tune with a few thousand of my brothers and sisters one day soon. Am hoping the cheer squad latches on to this big time.

The most poignant thing for me is that another club would have been torn apart by this.

Without our great history, there would have been no David Koch, son of a Magpie, who just had to get involved.
Maybe Keith Thomas, boyhood fan of the greatest club in the land, would just have been been a patsy for the SANFL.
Without it, surely the likes of Trengove, Boak, Hartlett and Butcher would have ****ed off to Victoria...what else kept them here while Crows headed home in droves?
Without it, maybe Andy D decides its not worth going in to bat for us at crucial moments over the past few years.

Our history took us in to the AFL against all odds. We're still here on the strength of that history.

You'll never tear us apart, because We Are Port Adelaide.

I remember they played this at AO when we played Melbourne, with a video on the big screen. Wish the video had been uploaded by the club, can't seem to find it.

There was another version uploaded by an account named DarrylPoole1870 on a private youtube channel using vision from the Melbourne AO game that I have no idea how I got access to and was funnily enough taken down just recently. I was thinking they might be thinking of using it on the weekend.

Was really well done.

if there were lyrics on the screens, i probably wouldn't sing out of principle. just seems really poxy and forced.

let it evolve on its own. if the fans want to sing it, they'll start doing it. it might just start with people shouting the last line.

the way the club has gone about it so far is right. if they wanted to force it onto everyone, they would have held a chant night.

All I can imagine is the bouncing ball with "here we go, here we go camry crows"
