Why should she or anyone else not get an allowance or the balance of an allowance just because they own a property that they could use? It is a bit unfair to those who own houses don't you think? If she did not own said house, she would be netting the very generous allowance anyway. If she wanted to, she could have put someone in her house to rent and earned the allowance and rented another property. She could have then negative geared the interest on the mortgage reduced her TI and taken the allowance. In the end the taxpayers may actually end up in a better position! As I said, I don't see a problem with it.
The police in the NT get paid a living allowance despite many owning their own houses.
Because the allowance is designed to subsidise the costs of members staying in Canberra during sitting times when they live elsewhere
If you live in Canberra permanently that is your primary residence so you don't get this additional cost, and therefore are not entitled to the rebate
This has been a rort for years, and many ministers have been embarrassed over its abuse
