Now official - Fevola sacked

"Mr Lynch said Fevola had "offered to play the entire 2011 season in the Lions reserves and accept whatever behavioral clauses the club wished to impose in an effort to return to AFL football in 2012".

This worries me.

We should have given him a crack at the reserves with tight clauses.

Putting on my "member of the board" hat (it's actually my Lions member's cap backwards), I think that'd be the worst of both possible worlds.

You'll get the negative publicity every time he ****s up again, because he's still on our list and still playing for us.

You don't get the positive publicity of him winning games for us.

Now that it has been revealed that he's getting psychiatric care for depression, more so than his care for gambling/alcohol issues the Lions are getting nothing but grief by the national media.

Conversely had they stuck with him they could have made themselves look into the good guys by sticking with him through thick and thin AND offering him the help that he hadn't had before.

Now Fev looks bad (because he's Fev) AND the Lions look bad - both come out of this bad.

The next stage of this is obvious -- Fevola will claim to have had depression for years, which his psychiatrist will no doubt back up with evidence linking his behavior to episodes of severe depression and he'll likely whatever court case is as a result. How is that a positive result for the Lions?

I understand your club's position but I also understand where Fev will come from. I've dealt with depression my entire life with a mother who was manic-depressive (now known as bi-polar). The Lions have put themselves into a messy situation. I hope it works out, I really do.

Thanks for the memory. :(

I mentioned this piece of action the other day.

It will always remain in the back of my head, a true genius when on in front of the goals.

Gee it is hard to know what to feel about this - the cost both on human resources and financially (depending on what the pay out). I really feel for our club. The good news is a decision has been finally made and we need to close this dark chapter. The cards were dealt and our bluff was called - time to move on.

Fevola Trade vs O'Reilly Trade

Now... the worst trade for all time.

Carlton traded for Steven O'Reilly, who played very little football for them, but did happen to blow the whistle on their salary cap rorting. Let's take a look.

Could you claim Rohan Bewick as part of this BD?

To quote the Brisbane Lions press release:

The timing of this decision was based on medical advice.

Yeah, I am a vocal Angus fan for his work so far, but I think the exceptions are in how he has handled Fevola.

Firstly for being too reactive in suspending Fevola after the park accusations. A bit of faith in one of our players pending more information would not have gone astray.

And now I think he's done it again. I can understand wanting to be proactive and no-nonsense but I think he failed basic game theory here. Would have been far more strategically sensible to bring Fevola back under a raft of behavioral clauses (which Lynch seems to indicate Fev was more than willing to accept). That way, if he stuffed up again, it would be entirely on him, and would potentially save us a chunk of coin.

There is clearly more behavioral breaches that didnt make the press, but because of this lack of public knowledge, it just looks poorly timed and it can be spun as us sacking a guy after he had seemingly made his first serious crack at turning his life around.

I think the club was probably well within its rights to sack him, but I think we failed to handle it quite as well as we could have.

I suspect the payout figure is going to be of an extent that it will offer very little salary cap relief. The only player retention benefit that will possible come out of it is being able to offer Mitch that forward spot full time.

Sorry, can't agree. Right from the start AJ has made it very clear that he will take no shit. He has been consistent from the start, regardless of long or short term pain. Good on ya, 'Gus.

As noted by others, Fev never played a full season for us. I have never really considered him a Lion. Sorry. If he stayed every day would be, "will it happen today". The cloud over the club would never lift. On with the future, for him & us.

I wish you all of the best in the future Fevo - but am pleased this saga is finally coming to an end.

Personally, I think giving Sydney pick 28 of Amon was a worse trade. The list Brisbane had at the end of 2009 was decent, but a long way off the pace. I don't think that list would have ever won a flag and had almost peaked. At the time adding the likes of Fevola was what was required to take such a list the next step.
Bradshaw was a fine player for the club, actually he was an absolute gun. But failed to get on the park last year and one suspects will now just play out his contract. Henderson was a high draft pick but I never really could see much in him. Didn't set the world alight and failed to live up to the hype generated (regardless of what he does at Carlton). However out of everyone we lost, he was probably most likely to be part of the Lions next premiership. Riska had a fine year last year but is nothing more than a hard working footballer that would have come no where near a best & fairest award at any other club last year. Brennan had all the talent in the world but failed to utilize it on a regular basis. Which leaves us with Sherman. Sherman was nothing more than an egotistical moron who either had an exciting game or failed to touch the football. Whilst all these players are above average footballers at their best, they were never consistent enough to form a premiership winning side. The risk was taken by Voss and it didn't pan out. Now we re-build a list that is capable of taking us to the next step. The likes of Redden, Rockcliff, Banfield and Rich are already a good start.

I couldn't agree more !!!!!:thumbsu:

Not many third year KPP are established stars, I still think he will justify being a first round draft pick, pity it will not be with us, we could surely use him this year if we had him.

I hate how this has all turned out and I hate how everyone is pointing the finger at Brisbane and saying what assholes the Lions are for giving him the sack.

Driving to work this morning by god did we as a club cop a hammering on SEN...and then who comes in with the steel capped boots...none other than Jason Akermanis and he teed off big time, with Michael Voss his target. I think we better get used to being public enemy no.1 for a while, although there are pockets of supporters for us in the media.

the problem the lions had was damned if they do & damed if they don't.

If they didn't they would be branded 'gutless' & weak, if they do they are branded as uncaring & callous.

Michael Voss has to come out and apolgise to us - the members

The damage his decision to take on Fevola has caused, we will be paying for for years.

Like any Manager for any business, you lose the respect of your workers, and they know that their manager has no problem cutting you off at the knees, he loses the confidence of the team, rot sets in.

Welcome to the 'rebuilding' stage everyone.

We're ****ed either way. We give him the flick now, it's a story for a couple of weeks. We don't and he ****s up it's a story for weeks and weeks again. Even having Fev on the list is a story now, just look at the various "Fev in rehab" stories. There's no way the media would let us come out of this looking as the good guys.

Rather than get into a debate about whether it was the right or wrong thing to pick him up in the first place, or right or wrong thing to axe him - two positives I can see are:

a) I firmly believe that the Sydney Swans openly referred to their own "No D*ckheads" policy during their very successful recent years. It was that policy that led to the demise of Nick Davis at senior level, and also strongly effected their recruiting policy at the time. While no one has openly announced that sort of setup at the Lions, with both Proud and Fevola let go of recent, one would assume that Johnson and Wright are beginning to set a similar policy in play. And I can't argue against that sort of direction.

b) I like that the letter on the website says "Dear members and supporters". Fair to say that Bowers and Kelly never acknowledged that "supporters" were an important part of the club (in fact going as far as bagging people out directly in emails I recall if they fell into the "supporter" rather than "member" category). I assume its a conscious decision. Good on Johnson and Wright for leading the way on that acknowledgement.

To me supporting a club is two-fold - we're all looking for onfield success and winning games. But I also want to feel proud of the club that I barrack for, and what they represent. So when I see the players volunteering to help flood victims with the cleanup, when I see Brownie in the paper at schools (the anti-Peter Costello "lock up your children" photoshoot if ever I've seen one), when I see the club using their initiative in the QLD Spirit jumper, when I see them openly re-embracing the Fitzroy heritage and connection, and then I think about the above two points - then I reckon we are heading in the right (or should that be Johnson Wright) direction to restoring the Pride in the Club.

And on field.... There were a lot of skinny kids running around in Maroon Blue and Gold the other night. Frustratingly bad play. BUT as someone who lived through the Fitzroy years, (especially the last few), where you can see skinny kids with potential and hope that they stick together and learn and hit the gym over a few seasons together, and you know that they'll improve.... well to me that team that played the other night was very similar. BUT the advantage they have is that there are guys around the club like Brown, Black, Power, Drummond, Adcock, and Merrett and Co, who those skinny kids can learn from and develop into a decent team. The senior core will be very useful to our development in the next few years, even if we don't challenge for a Premiership while the likes of Black, Power and Brown are still playing for us. So the on field success will also come, but over some time.

We're on the way. It's going to take some time though. But I think a "No D*ickheads" policy is a great start.

Why didn't piss weak Voss get sacked for knocking a bloke outside a night club. Why didn't Mitch Clark get sacked for taking piss on a Cigarette machine,Why didn't St Kilda sack half there no gooder's over photo's on facebook,Why didn't Alan Didak get sacked for all his indoctrination's? A part form Clark they win football game's that is all there Job is entitled to do.You can all kiss the board's butt I can't wait to see your membership tally now don't think the Lion's will survive if what people have been saying is true.

I wonder if I will get a full refund if I cancel now,Anybody know?

Good move by the Lions. The only move, really. The moment Fev's lovely wife took the kids back to Melbourne was the day it was all over... there was no way he was going to stay on the rails after that.

I don't think I've ever seen a more talented footballer than Fevola. It's a measure of his talent that he managed to create a good career for himself despite being completely and utterly mentally unsuited to professional sport.

Put a responsible head on his shoulders and he probably would've been one of the best 20 players of the 21st Century.

Still amazed though, that the Brisbane football admin at the time took the guy. Giving an inexperienced Voss almost total control was one of the worst decisions I've seen from a club for quite some time.

My advice (if I was worth listening to) to the current Lions admin: pay the guy out for both seasons now, don't quibble. Offer (along with Carlton and their past-players assoc, plus the AFLPA) to support him in his post-football transition... walk away as quickly as you can, and become a proper football club again.

The last thing you guys want is six months of Fev rubbish being trawled through the courts.
