Dante had a bit of a mare through no fault of his own, but one moment that was pleasing to see was when Zak was involved in a bit of push and shove (who would believe it?) Dante was the first one in there throwing Essendon players aside. A 20 year old, baby-faced ruckman who had to rush into the game from the coaches box.

He's a good kid, a talented ruckman and plays the game the way we want a big man to play. He'll come good.

We join the Dogs in winning after the bye

People realise we've had the staggered byes for years and it's never been an issue?

It's purely a coincidence that a bunch of games were fixtured where the better team wasn't coming off the bye so they won.

There's nothing in it. Obviously there's nothing in it. Playing after 7 days or 14 days obviously makes no difference.

The DBJ hold at the end would have been seen by the beady eyes of every maggot out there.

Then there was Ridley being caught red hot holding the ball by Boak.

They really are cheats.

I've got a theory that the worst thing you can do is get a good run from the umpires early on the road because the crowd get into it and the noise of affirmation takes effect for the rest of the game.

Obviously this doesn't apply to our home games where they're determined to prove they're unbiased.

Dante really copping it for a bloke that had no prep at all into his first game. Only injected 10 mins into the first quarter as he said he didnt have time to think or to be nervous and therefore as expected ran around like a headless chook. Saturday night footy stand alone game at the biggest and most prestigious stadium against one of the biggest vic clubs.

Against a 31 year old, 75 game ruckman. Who, i still find funny that people are blaming Dante for Philips ruck smashes in the last quarter when burgoyne was already on the ground and Dante subbed off.

Sure he didnt have 40 hitouts 12 marks and kick 5 goals but what i did see is one bone crunching holding the ball in the middle (followed by a shocking handball but thats okay) which showed the aggression that he likely got picked for. If anything probably the coaches fault for leaving scooter in too late if he had any inkling of injury

It's nothing against him, and hopefully he does come good. He's very very young. The issue is he shouldn't be playing. The ire needs to be directed at the match committee for constantly overlooking Sam Hayes, to play guys like teakle and Dante who are objectively much worse at this stage of their career.

I thought our 3 games before the bye were among our best performances of the year so far along with the Lions game in round 1. So I think the bye halted our flow and momentum a bit.

Away from home in tough conditions against a capable side, losing our first ruck right before the game, and with Wines, Boak, JHF, Bergman and Marshall all arguably playing their worst game of the year… no way we win that in previous years. Sensational win.

We need to manage Lycett and Dixon though, think we should back in Hayes and Lord in certain games. Next week is ideal.

It was the 57th goal after the siren in AFL/VFL history- the 4th by a Port player: Burgoyne, Poulton, Gray, Houston.

Far more common in recent times, maybe because of the time clock.

We have had at least two misses also- Daniel Motlop, Westhoff.

I can’t remember Port ever having a kick after the siren in the sanfl- can anyone?

It's funny Essendon haven't got one since University in 1913 😂

Baptism of fire for Dante. Has a taste now of the level required. Hope it ignites a burning desire in him to be a player at the level.

As an aside, Jonathan Brown didn't touch the ball in his debut game... as I recall he ended up half decent 😉

Kade Simpson didn’t get a possession until his 4th game !!!!

Goal umpires cop a lot of crap. But geez how good is this guy - a couple of dozen blokes jostling around him and his eyes planted solely on the ball and he makes the right call.

Brilliant stuff.

There was seriously ordinary calls from the umps last night

can someone correct me if I’m wrong but if you get tackled and drop the ball that’s holding the ball yes? idk how many times Essendon players got done for that.

You can spin someone 360 and they drop it and it not be HTB, but a player can be tackled without prior and have the ball underneath them, unable to get it out (like Ollie) and they'll pay it.
Absolute morons. Most football fans will agree that HTB is the biggest problem with officiating and has been for years. It's unbelievable they still can't get it right.

The thing I hate the most about the holding the ball rule is it penalises players who actually try to make the play. A classic example was Aliir on the back flank late in the match. He takes the ball, is immediately tackled and tries to push off and fend off the tackler. He gets holding the ball paid against him because he's taken it on. If he instead just accepts the tackle and pretends to make an effort to get rid of it by punching the ball against his chest, it's probably a ball up.

The worst thing with the Ollie one was the Essendon players pushed it back under him and the commentators are screaming He's dragged it back in, he's dragged it back in!!!
