Expansion NRL Fans: Why so much AFL hate.

To be honest, I don't blame them for being hostile. I have no doubt whatsoever that if the AFL's star players were being poached with big bucks by the NRL and if the NRL was expanding into our territories with the aim of relegating AFL to an afterthought in the sporting world, we would react just as badly and just as strongly.

We just happen to be in the strong position and we are not threatened. Don't be so quick to put us above them on a moral level. There are just as many feral AFL supporters who talk trash about rugby. I have no doubt that our insults to rugby as game would be just as grand as theirs if the positions were reversed.

I don't watch or even like rugby, but I think that we should be a little more understanding of what's happening. I mean, they are Aussies just like us. They were raised on a game just like us. Why do we have to be such bastards and rubbish their sport and say we want it to be destroyed?

I don't like the way the AFL is handling the expansion. Expansion has it's merits, but deliberately undermining the competition by stealing players and giving the new clubs such ridiculously large salary-cap concessions so they can buy a premiership - it's just not decent.

I for one, won't be having a crack at rugby fans - no matter what they say about AFL. You just have to put yourself in their shoes and ask yourself how you would feel.

It's the same reason that there are a lot of AFL fans who absolutely hate soccer. The AFL is considerably bigger and healthier than the NRL right now, and so a lot of their fans feel threatened (and with good cause, judging by the AFLs relentless push into NRL heartlands). Similarly, the World Cup is considerably bigger and healthier than the AFL, and hence we have the patently ridiculous reactions on display in the World Cup bid subforum up the top of the website.

I can guarantee you that if the positions were swapped and the NRL were stealing AFL players and trying to set up extra clubs in Melbourne, many AFL fans would come out with the same type of attitude as NRL fans.

Even true RL fans think LU is a joke.

So I wouldn't get too emotional over it. After all, Lions and Swans crowds often get double the Storm crowds so lets not get too carried away!

Hell, I'm a passioniate Storm fan and even I get called a Victard. Haha. Morons.

Victard. Merkin. Grub. Cheating merkin grub. So clever.

Hey El Diablo? You're a ********. BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

What you don't understand is that the TV figures for rugby league are actually incredibly healthy. Crowds numbers by comparison to AFL are a joke. But TV ratings are actually extremely good.

true, however you have to consider that AFL will always get a higher tv rights deal then NRL, even if they have the same number of followers. AFL gets shown in more places and has more chances for ads, and thus will always attract larger $$$

Grabbing a watermelon, running into a wall of fat guys and falling over a line is complete and total skill and it - hahahahahaha sorry, couldn't type that with a straight face :D

I am a AFL moderator in this forum site some of these blokes are a lot better they are actually interested in learning about Aussie Rules, it is probably one of the better League sites and it caters for World League.

Well that's enough of a plug.

EDIT:: thanks Snoochems

It's just chest beating...mainly a NSW insecurity about an indigenous game that started in popularity in Melbourne and the rest of Oz loves...

Brisbane and Gold Coast will get interest flagging up north. Sydney is set and GWS will struggle but will come good in time...

Funny thing is had Folau gone to RU there would not have been 5% of the backlash and phobia...

Oh and RU supporters are so refined compared to RL...:p

This thread is a bit pot calling the kettle black don't you think? I think this is a two way street. Have a look around this forum in the past few days, particularly at the thread below and you'll see a lot of NRL hate.

http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/showthread.php?t=713969

I wouldn't take much notice of whats on LU at the moment, there is a lot of AFL angst following the Falou announcement. Trolling over there hasn't helped.

I'm a league and union fan and am partially to the odd AFL game. League supporters have to put up with what they recieve as media bias against their game either real or imagined (e.g. the Offsiders, poor media coverage in southern states, Storm not shown on TV before midnight in Melbourne).

I often wonder why some AFL fans feel such hate toward the NRL. Do they feel threatened? They shouldn't - AFL is a religion in the southern states and will obviosuly never be surpassed by the NRL. It has more money than the NRL and has a team in every major city. Despite the NRLs multiple attempts at self-destruction over the last 15 years, it is now in a stronger position than ever. It will get a record amount at the next TV rights deal and will look to expand. It is not going away either, so it looks like we need to all just get along.

The AFL and NRL are obviously in direct competition for juniors, sponsorship money and TV ratings, but the fans don't need to be. People will always have a love for that one special sport, but it doesn't mean you can't enjoy others; Demetriou and Gallop won't know. Variety is the spice of life people, get out there and enjoy watching these elite athletes in whichever sport they partake.

Let the flaming begin...

It's bemusing for me to read some of the stuff written about Rugby League and the NRL in this forum.

I love the swans. I love aussie rules. What do you know i'm from Sydney. Surprised yet? Now here's the real stickler: I love the Roosters and the NRL too!! Miraculous! A fan who supports two teams from two different codes equally!

You people annoy me almost as much as those precious 'gAyFL' hating idiots over at Daily 'Tellucrap'.

How can most of you come of here and start slandering Leauge fans about how 'threatened' they feel when you have absolutely no idea? I mean you call it 'rugby' and start sprouting **** as if you have any authority on the matter.

Let me assure you they don't feel threatened by aussie rules. Leauge fans trust in the beauty of the game and don't at all think that the sport isn't quality. :thumbsu: Most of us are annoyed that the AFL want to impose themselves on us and steal our talent in order to use it against us.

Let me show you guys some opinions from a Roosters NRL forum on the signing of Izzy. Hopefully it will give you some insight into the real concerns of NRL fans.

EXAMPLE 1:

Just have to bite our lip until the independent commission/tv deal come through.

Unfortunately, the administration in our game is a shamble, from rep bodies and NRL to club management.

Once we become more professional from top to bottom we will see our great product suffer.

I believe in the Salary cap, but the amount will surely have to increase dramatically if we want to keep the depth in the NRL.

There are quite a few reasons for poor depth:
* reserve grade in shambles with the NYC system in place
* money not in the game to keep solid first graders who can earn twice as much overseas
* poor management of junior areas esp outside the two big states( country nsw isn't too flash either)

I'd rather the money be spent in those areas rather than matching outrageous offers from rival codes. I would be filthy if my club paid that much for Folau.
Watch Brisbane improve it's squad by signing two quality player using Folau's cash.

EXAMPLE 2:
The GWS signing of Falou will do one of two things - encourage some people of the west to go to the GWS and ensure that others, espec league fans, never attend a GWS game.

As a person who lives in the GWS heartland, Falou's signature has ensured I will never find myself at a GWS game.

I was already pissed off that I'm bloody paying rates to assist GayFL, thanks to Blacktown Council's bowing and scraping to that drunkard Sheedy and his lackies.

I hope the whole 'experiment' of a GayF team in the west is a miserable failure.

Get the picture?

NRL supporters know that once the Independent Commission comes in and News Limited's power is diminished that we can finally get a little bit of control back and work towards getting some more money in the game with a new rights deal. Just becasue the NRL doesn't have the same amount of money or members as the AFL doesn't mean the sport is in a bad place. Different operation, different sporting cultures.

People are also very much aware of what the AFL are trying to do (undermine the NRL) and they won't have one bit of it. It's building resentment no doubt, but imagine if the NRL stole Gary Abblet, Chris Judd, Adam Goodes? Of course you'd feel pissed off in the same way.

So it's not an inferiority complex you fools. In all honestly people from both sides have a superiority complex thinking their sport is naturally better. That attitude disgusts me. Nobody has the national sport. Don't even try to tell me the AFL is national when the Swans still struggle in the country's largest market. You aren't national until you've conquered all states.

Why don't some of you open your mind to other sports and learn how to enjoy them all. I love sport and invest in my teams equally. I just wish sports could coexist, because the scariest notion for me is being denied the opportunity to enjoy them all. I don't ever want to see one code prosper to the detriment to another. :(

There's so food for thought from someone who likes both sports.

Unfortunately for rugby league, apart from a few die hards, few in Melb are genuinely interested in the game.
If there was genuine "hatred" then it would be something for the ARL to latch on to. Hatred suggest an interest that just aint there.

I care little for the ARL. I certainly don't hate it.

I "hate" rugby league just as much as I hate yellow exercise books.

For what its worth, I don't mind watching the odd RL game (origin, Storm) but posting a homophobic quote with the word GayF (sic) in it will not garner much support and understanding around here mate.

Did you read a thing I wrote? I said I love the AFL and aussie rules. I then said I hate people who called it 'gAyFL' on the Daily Telegraph. That quote you used was what I said was copied and pasted from a League forum. I wanted to show people from BF two types of opinions people had about the Izzy saga from an Leaguies pov. Neither bold parts were my own words hence the disclaimer and it being in bold...:confused::confused::confused:

I can't believe your having a go at me when you didn't even read what I wrote. :(

Disagree with this. You can't use a Bay 13 thread as authority for your argument. That place is designed to say ridiculous and offensive things. The immature 'GAYFL', 'Victard' and whatever other pathetic terms are in use, are commonplace amongst mainstream League fans/forums. Most AFL fans are either neutral to NRL or couldn't care enough about that game to think up pathetic names for the sport. Certainly wouldn't say most fans here "hate" NRL.

Great post.
It is almost a crime on here to follow more than one code. I follow AFL and NRL, and hell, I love 'sokka' as well. What a pathetic creep I must be.

Mark in Time, you just don't get it, do you??

for every thread talked about RL here there are 10 plus on LU etc

Most Aussie Rule supporters don't care about RL and that rubs you guys up even more

Storm moved in the heart of Melbourne, no one cared
A whole new stadium was built funding from the government that could have gone to other needs, yet no Aussie Rules fan battered an eye lid
The old stadium had the space to hold Storm, all it needed some funding from NRL yet they never seem to put a cent into stadiums always ask the local/federal governments and yet when AFL asks from some funding they cry like girls, post party member details on threads and encourage each other to send emails or phone...insecure hateful vengeful scum supporters I say!

If an Aussie Rules player gets signed in a RL league side, so be it, I doubt any here would feel threatened...

It's simple, it's a Sydney vs Melb stigma...you guys are threatened up there, Grow up boys and get over it

After the past couple of weeks with these flogs bust ing in i can say i hat league nealy 92.5 % now.

Mate I was in here on Tuesday night and there were at least two threads about Folou and Hunt in the main forum with similar sentiments towards the NRL. A casual browse of The Age's comments page had similar reading.
