NT Team in the AFL?

Proximity to Asia for a Darwin team. Darwin to Dili is 200km. Use AFL team in Darwin as a propre gateway to Asia. Australia-East Timor relations have hit a low as Australia is trying to get the "international waters" border pushed north for oil and gas reserves, which as upset Ramos Horta et al.
If you think Indonesians are ever going to give a crap about AFL, your common sense is worse than your geography.

Darwin in the dry season (not the wrong season, just different to NTFL) is the better season for footy and night games all season would be the go with fairybreads from down south struggling to play above 20 degrees. With an INPEX commitment/major sponsorship there may be a few years of solid funding but itd be dependent on the project of the day.
Population in Darwin is a limitation but an AFL team could be a part of a possible growth opportunity in the North and increases in trade with Asia could help the job market. Also Darwin despite being a blip on the population of GWS and GC would attract similar crowds, if not more with their own team.
So Dave rather than sprouting sheit maybe come up with a bit more than random, uninformed crap.

So wrong season.. no.
Too hot... no.
Not financially viable.. not initially
Insufficient population.. likely better support than other expansion teams.

In saying that the AFL is not in the market for more teams just more supporters. Tasmania and NT are footy states and likely just about everyone already has a side.. which equals no new revenue and lots more expenditure. The AFL ks a business and like all businesses it's ultimately about making $.

I do like the suggestion of the Northern Suns and playing maybe a couple games from Darwin and maybe Townsville or Cairns as a lock every year. Though itd be the north Queensland markets not NT the AFL would be interested in.

But before any increase on GC demands the AFL has to find a way to get them competitive. They are a basket case. In my eyes Carlton is 3 years in front of their development and they will have retention issues until they are at least comparible in facilities.

The AFL needs to be super aggressive in the GWS and QLD markets, possibly using staff to enter schools and conduct programs offering free fees, footy boots, meet the players etc to all talented kids no matter their age and commit to it for 20 years. While it is not the game the 'cool kids' play in the school yard it's always going to be a tough ask to force the AFL culture on people, especially when their local team is also embarrassing to follow.

While it's obvious that this won't happen, you'd think from some of the city-dwellers in this thread that living somewhere other than Melbourne/Sydney is as bad as living in a ******* mud-hut somewhere in Africa.

Life's generally better in the big cities.

I dont believe that the NT has the right economic environment to support a team situated there on a full time basis - not in this time period anyway. It needs more economic growth to sustain the crowds needed to make a game viable on a permanent basis.

Awesome Idea Though I think a Dublin team be better but dont let the Eagles play them away, they blame Victoria for it
a china team or an england or usa team would be dumb, only a new zealand team would be good i reckn like the nrl do, and in usa, they have canada teams in the ice hockey and the mayor league baseball too
