Re: Official 2012 Player Sponsorship Thread [See what you can win by pledging to sponsor a player]

I may as well put my hand up for Sainter's spot. Thankfully my Monday's are easy-going.

Strahany, can you please PM me your details so I can let the club know.

Cheers.

Re: Official 2012 Player Sponsorship Thread [See what you can win by pledging to sponsor a player]

Are you a Freakin victim too or is another uni playing silly buggers?

No, all my fault.

I finish 5pm Monday and 4pm Tuesday. I thought it was the other way round but read my timetable wrong.

I'd take the day off or leave early to go but I've just started a Dip Ed and the workload seems to be quite intense.

Promised myself I wouldn't slacken off like my first degree so I'm not taking a day off week 2!

Nah, blame the uni, from what I've heard they all treat post-grads like excrement. Most of the day is devoted to undergrads, the post-grads get shoe-horned in at the bookends of the day.

I speak from experience, doing a Masters of Teaching at Deakin (like a Dip Ed, but 6 months longer and sounds cooler)

Re: Official 2012 Player Sponsorship Thread [See what you can win by pledging to sponsor a player]

I've been the last two years, the season launch is a pretty nice shindig.

No uni on Wednesdays, so I'll put my hand up. I'll see if senior is available

Had a great time today with Trev, Brendan, and Ledge. The club put on a great event - pity we couldn't bring home the glory :p

And after initially deciding to give the Season Launch a miss, I've changed my mind - ill put my hand up for it.

Lawn Bowls Report

The event took place at Brighton Beach Bowls club and after a bit of a reshuffle in our lineup, I slipped into our bowls team along with Strahany and Boydie and of course Tommy Ledger.

I was the first of our squad to arrive so got to have a really good chat with Tommy. Surprisingly he was a lot taller than I realised. Just a shade under 6 foot. We had a chat about pre-season and he felt much better after being injured for most of the previous version. He enjoyed getting out there for the NAB Cup as he doesn't think he stands out at training, ie not a great runner (he noted at this point that Jarryn Geary is a freak runner) so he does his best work during games. He of course thought the whole Essendon thing was a joke but was looking forward to finding space on Subiaco this weekend.

Strahany and Boydie soon arrived and after a bit of a chat (another great part of the sponsorship is being able to meet new Saints fans) we headed out for a bit of a practice bowl with Tommy, Jack Newnes and Arryn Siposs. It was all pretty light hearted and I had a quick chat with Jack Newnes about his pre-season and how he had found it. He said it was a big step up and it was hard training nearly every day especially when you were still sore from 4 days ago. He still thought he had the best job in the world though. It can sometimes be hard remembering when you're talking to these guys that they are still so young. After a bit of a practice it was time to dig into the great BBQ and drinks that were on offer (no charge of course). It was a great feed. Those Saints boys sure have big appetites (especially Brett Peake who was seen snaffling 3 sausages at a time in his hands on multiple occasions).

The draw for the KO tournament was announced and Team Ledger was pitted against Team Newnes. It was a best of 2 ends affair. We were quickly down 3-0 and things were looking grim. However a quick reload on the Carlton Draughts and things began to look up. A lovely bowl by Boydie broke our duck and the left handed work of Strahany was really working the angles and we went from strength to strength tying things up at 3 all after 2 ends to send the game into sudden death. Unfortunately one of Jack's sponsors delivered an absolute peach to take the victory. We were beaten but far from disgraced.

So it was back inside to have a chat with Tommy and things turned to football. He saw himself fighting with 5 or 6 others for a spot in the Rnd 1 team. He said having the new coaches around was amazing from the fact that it was such a big increase. He obviously hadn't spent much time with Maxy or Hamill but he liked was TS40 was bringing to the group. He also said you could tell Laidley had been a senior coach previously as he wasn't afraid to take over at certain points and get the message across. Tommy also advised he spent time on BF during his junior days. We suggested he jump back on and pump himself up a bit.

At this point the great Lenny Hayes come over for a chat and he'll be on the plane to Perth for a hit out. He was happy to ask what I did with myself and is just a fantastic bloke. He told Tommy that Milney believes he has hair akin to the great "Monkee" from the TV show. Boydie managed to grab a group shot of all of us with Lenny, Tommy, BJ and Armo. Great stuff.

After that we managed to have a chat to Seb Ross about his pre-season and other sports. Unlike Newnes he hadn't found things too difficult in adjusting but admitted he had never really had an injury throughout his junior career. He hadn't spoken to his cousin about Wangaratta-gate. Boydie and I found it a little strange when we asked when he would find out if he was in the squad for Perth, was that given the squads were announced on their day off, they would have to check the AFL website to find out! Seb also advised he had been on a BigFooty a bit in the leadup to the draft in terms of checking out what people were saying. I was tempted to namedrop CHBench at this point, but thought better of it!

After a few more drinks and an ice-cream which only partly made it into the mouth, we had a game against Nick Dal Santo's team. Fair to say our team came into its own with a solid 7-0 victory. I was half expecting for us all to be fielding pennant offers from the club. Dal was great to talk to and enjoyed a gag. He said the surface at Wangaratta was actually quite good and that most of the water had pooled on top. We also got a nice group shot with him that Boydie will provide. The conversation turned to cars and Dal advised he was sponsored by Audi. Kosi strolled by at this point and mimiced the great man. Dal they advised us that Kosi was obsessed with his earthmoving equipment and would often quip something like "have a look at that truck, it must be worth $10 million", to which the boys would tell him basically to shut up.

After that we had the GF of the bowl tournament, complete with national anthem. Team Ray vs Team Armo with the latter getting the job done. Milney was barracking for every bowl from the sidelines.

From my point of view, the team looks wonderfully close knit this year. All players were talking and laughing with each other and everyone seemed in great spirits. Good to see heading into the season.

All in all, a great night and a wonderful opportunity to mix with the players. If you've got any specific questions, let me know, but I've tried to be as thorough as possible.

Sounds like a great night, can't believe I missed it to lie on a dance floor and be part of the earth!

Would like to hear a little more about Dal and the mimicry. Was he impersonating Kosi's voice and/or movement?

Also curious about the players' skills with lawn bowls. How good were Ledge, Newnes, Dal? Any of them pursuing an Olympic lawn bowls career after footy?

Great report

It was Kosi taking it out of Dal about the Audi sponsorship.

Ledge was very nonchalant about it all. Basically picked up the bowl and let it rip, no pre bowl routine at all. Armo had some pretty good form and as you can imagine Milney and BJ were as competitive as they came.

Re: Official 2012 Player Sponsorship Thread [See what you can win by pledging to sponsor a player]

Nice stuff mate, little disappointed you didnt mention the awesome work of Team Schneider though. Fact we managed to upset the captain with our 5-0 demolition of him is sure to be talking point for years to come :p

Not to keen on making public much of what players said, but can say Raph is back this week but will most likely be at Sandy. Against popular belief, we will be fielding a very strong side this weekend. Due to week off before start of season, and limited game on weekend it appears bit of concern that if they rest players it might hinder them as wont get required gametime into their legs.

Was a great night, and no doubt the boys went there to win. Armo, Ray, Siposs were quite handy bowlers. Schneids wasnt too bad either.

I'd expect BJ to be just deadly precise, while Milney has no doubt mastered the "Flipper"

:D:D bring it on i say!! Although very very annoyed we lost to Team Siposs after cleaning up Team Clarke in 2nd round... Of all teams to lose to

Re: Official 2012 Player Sponsorship Thread [See what you can win by pledging to sponsor a player]

Would have loved to be there as it sounds an awesome time was had and I always enjoy trying my hand at new sports and failing dismally, just yeah, no mention of a cart or pulley system of some description meant I was imitating my best rock impersonation if I did, so glad you all had a great time.

I'm also a no go for the launch sadly.
