Sadly I won't be able to attend either. Sounds like a ripper of a day though.

Is their any chance that a horse is running that has a connection with the club / players?

I've held back as I've already taken a prize this year (so's the old man), but if the alternative is the tickets going to waste we'll put our hands up. Happy to forgo if anyone else expresses interest.

Travel costs included, L2M4G ?

No, didn't think so... so sorry, but will be a passive supporter only...

You're in boys! Can you PM your postal details ASAP so I can let the club know?

Thanks goodie.

Report:

Okay, I should probably preface this by saying I'm not the greatest fan of the races. But it was an alright day. Rocked up at 11:30, the function room opened up about 11:45. The old man and I baggsed a table in the corner with a decent view of the track, which also gave us a decent view of the players rocking up in small groups starting from about midday.

Mostly it was the young fellows, first and second years who didn't play last night. Really had to test the memory, the likes of Lever and Shenton are easy enough to recognise, but still struggle to put a face to the likes of Staley, Newnes, Dunnell, Curren and telling Newnes and Ross apart (blondish mid-size midfielders, put them side by side and you'll know what I mean).

Took a little while longer for the boys who played last night to start rocking up. Most notable absentee was Milney, the reason for his absence was mentioned but I didn't catch it clearly. Also missing were Jack Steven, Raph Clarke and Jason Blake. Schneider and his black eye were in attendance, noticed a slight limp on him, Ahmed looked very ginger. I'd put a big question mark over him for this week.

Food and drink came pretty regularly, they couldn't give away the sushi but the chicken strips were popular (and bloody tasty). Kids got bowls of chips, lucky little ****ers. Open bar, Crownies, Cascade Light, soft drink.

Turns out our table was in fact a dud. The players mostly avoided that end of the room, those few who did venture our way got snared by the large table next to us (and then fled in the opposite direction after).

Our man Ledger rocked up amongst the middle of the players, and proved quite elusive for some time, dashing about, on his phone, talking to the players. Finally caught him after half an hour or so. Nice lad, when you can get him. Apparently injuries haven't been the cause of his absence from the senior side, he's been fit all year. Felt he had a good run in the VFL at the start, but his last two performances haven't been stand-outs. Byes have also been a factor, hard to put together a consistent month with a total of five byes interspersed through the season.

Also talked a little about Seaford, and how training there should help with our record at the MCG (although Tom's only played on the G once). Interesting to compare Docklands and the G with a player, Docklands is easier to play on but lacks history. The old man and I were greatly amused to learn that the perfectly green turf of Docklands appears that way because it's regularly painted. Go there on a Wednesday and it looks terrible.

Ledge admitted to being a Supercoach dud. Apparently after round 5 he even told his old man to trade him out.

Not a great function for talking to players beyond your sponsored, most, especially the younger players, stuck together in packs that you'd need to be Justin Koschitzke to crash. Mood was good, understandable after a win.

The MC pulled up Big Fish for a chat, talked about his upcoming 30th birthday on Tuesday and there were many jokes as a teammate dobbed Sam in for his trips to the solarium. Once a week apparently. A joke by the MC about Goddard fell flat, BJ looked very foldy-army, almost Eddie on Friday night like. Read into that what you will.

Didn't win the raffle. Humbug.

Said hi to Nick Riewoldt. Literally that was all, very hard man to get to.

Envious of Dempster and Markworth's sponsors, those two were still merrily chatting away after the other lads had cleared out. Bonus points to Siposs for sticking around and talking to any supporters that approached him.

Which the old man and I did. Sippo is happy with his season so far, 7 games, and pleased with the effort last night. I was happy to have my suspicion confirmed that part of the game plan was to hit Essendon as hard and often as possible. Also Watters planned to expose Fletcher, make him play man-on-man and limit his chances to play third man up as he likes.

We had some colourful words about the umpires, particularly the Saad play-on call and the Armo 50 metre penalty, but Sippo was remarkably tactful. Next two weeks will be a challenge, Sydney in Sydney especially. The Swans have been flying under the radar but the boys know what a challenge they'll be.

Reason the younger fellows rocked up first was the players from last night had a recovery session in Seaford. Sippo was very glad that it was some time around the oval and the ice baths rather than Port Philip Bay. Can't say I blame him.

Betting news

The old man had a bet on Officer Dibble in the first. Useless glue rag.
He also went with Grey Chloe in the second, ignoring the advice of the MC to take #2 Deepwell Station. Deepwell Station promptly romped home, much to the delight of the crowd and Arryn Siposs who apparently backs his own number.
I had two bets for the day. Kingdom of War came 3rd in the 3rd, prompting a $2.50 return on my dollar each way bet. Cash Burner lived up to its name in the 4th. 50 cent profit, last of the big spenders me.
Ledger lost $60
Siposs had a $15 or so profit last I heard.

No photos, just never really got that chance. Had the camera, never used it. Sorry.

Good day in all.

Any questions?

Disappointing you couldn't catch more of the boys goodie.

They were obviously in good spirits?

Disappointing you couldn't make a profit and pay for the remaining shares!

Yeah that was disappointing, would've loved to talk to Rhys, Young Jack, Tommy Simpkin, Dal and many others. Not a single player approached our table, maybe the proximity to the stage and the chance the MC would shanghai them scared them off, the two conversations we did get we had to chase the players. Add to that my unwillingness to crash the boys' group conversations, particularly when I was uncertain as to the identity of one or two of the players in the group.

The mood was very bouyant, the boys were in good spirits. Siposs was very happy with the win last night, think Ledger's getting a little frustrated. The Sandy byes combined with a slight drop in form over the last few weeks and the emergence of the likes of Newnes and Ross have really put a dampener on his chances to crack the seniors.

During his interview he admitted that the last horse he told everyone to bag failed miserably and he wasn't worth listening to.

Sounds like Armo, Simpkin and Geary need to have a few words with Ledger about the virtue of being patient. He doesn't need to worry about getting a game yet, just needs to keep doing the work at VFL and the games will come.

Did you quote the wrong post or take something seriously out of context? :p

Sorry I should have quoted this, and referred to other reports that Ledger is getting frustrated.:

" Our man Ledger rocked up amongst the middle of the players, and proved quite elusive for some time, dashing about, on his phone, talking to the players. Finally caught him after half an hour or so. Nice lad, when you can get him. Apparently injuries haven't been the cause of his absence from the senior side, he's been fit all year. I don't doubt that he'll end up getting a decent go at it, the ball seems to end up in his hands all the time.

Don't read too much into that, a lot of that's my interpretation. He wants to play at the top level, hard to blame the lad for that. He's also a pretty harsh critic of himself.
