I'm not too fussed about "winning" every trade.

It's not about "winning" trades so we can beat our chests on BF.

We have 14 players on our senior list currently out of contract. We need to delist at least 1 of them to satisfy the minimum 3 ND picks. If we use pick 4 on a kid and then upgrade 1 rookie it means delisting 1 uncontracted players as we currently have 1 senior spot available after trade weeks and FA.

That still leaves 13 uncontracted players on our senior list, many of whom are spuds.

We only have picks 49 and over and the PSD to replace any of them - I repeat 13 of them! Sure we'll re-sign some of them but we'll be offloading a lot of crap and onloading a lot of crap for the sake of it because we didn't trade astutely in trade period. This is why some posters are not happy with our latter trades, nothing to do with the over-all direction Neeld is taking us.

Perhaps its because I spend too much of my BF life on the bay, but I was initially horrifed with the Gysberts trade. Visions in my head of all the threads lambasting Nutty Neeldy and all that. This was somewhat molified by the Morton trade. I would've been thrilled if we just delisted that spud let alone getting anything from West Coast for him at all. I actually feel sorry for the guy. His self esteem must be totally shot by now, but we're trying to win a premiership here, not keep people from bothering Beyond Blue.

In the wash up I'm pretty happy with what we've done. Got rid some a couple of skinny kids with promise that hasn't eventuated and brought in hard professionals. Even if Pedersen, Rodan and to a lesser extent, Byrnes, stuggle to get games, they will help in making the Dees a much harder team to come up against. I'd rather win games than respect, but if you're not going to win games anyway, you might as well take all the respect that you can.

And attitude plays more of a part in winning games than people give it credit for. Look at how this year's GF turned out. If you can get 22 guys in your line-up that'll have a red hot go for four quarters, you'll likely do better than fielding guys on potential that they may have shown a couple of years ago.

Bail, Barty, Bate, Bennell, Cook, Davis, Dunn, Jetta, Joel Mac, Petterd, Sellar, Spencer, Strauss
Happy to keep all but 2-4 of that list. With new arrivals many will just be depth anyway.

We reportedly Nicholson and Evans had a written agreement under Bailey to be upgraded this year (much the same as Daw did at North), so we may possibly upgrade all three OR leave Magner on the rookie list for another 12 months, and make him our nominated rookie at the start of the season

If that's true, then Dean Bailey is even dumber than I thought. It would at least explain why they got their guernsey's upgraded to #26 & #32. I couldn't imagine either of those players were being chased by other clubs, why do that? Nicho probably deserves a spot considering he's a hard worker and in our best 3 or 4 trainers & has shown some ability. I rate Evans, but the kid's body hasn't held up so far, and it wasn't holding up even prior to being drafted. Just, ugghh...Dean Bailey, folks..

Those four will go, the rest are worth holding onto..

I made a slight error, we need to delist at least 1 player. I forgot we had 1 senior spot available (7 out and 6 in including Viney) which means that there will be 13 but it makes little difference, we have a lot of work to do.

That list you put up is reasonable but add Rodan and Byrnes who are maybe 2 yr prospects there are a lot of short term propositions and vanilla players there which isn't very comforting. Farren Ray and maybe a 2nd rounder would have changed the complexion of things but anyway time to move on I guess.

Dunn is reportedly a lock to re-sign but I'm 50/50 on most of them.

Whats wrong with Davis?

Frawley, McDonald, Garland, Watts, Sellar, Dunn and Pedersen (if required) are all in front of him as tall defenders. He's going to be coming into his 3rd season as an AFL player 8th in line as a tall defender at the 16th ranked club in the competition.

I don't think he's done enough to warrant another 2 years.

Well this is all very exciting. i mean sure, maybe we could have got some better picks, but morton, martin and gys are all fringe players at best. Fringe players in a shit team. enough about potential. development of a player is not all down to the club, the player has to meet the club halfway, and if those guys didnt want it, then I'm happy they're are off the list
Neeld knows what type of players make a professional football team and these guys are not it. If another coach wants a crack at them then so be it, but they wont make it on our list.
I for one am happy with the culture and professionalism and hunger being brought into our list, and the deadwood cut out.
I know this is a divisive issue, but weve been calling for it for years. Instead of worrying over trade value, and how we might be laughed at on big footy, lets enjoy some ruthlessness ffs

I believe the favoured term is Mad Mark. ;)

Trent Dennis Lane was traded for pick 46.... how the hell does that work when Martin is traded for 59 and 70 or whatever the hell it was

He played well in the VFL this year and nearlly got a call up a few times, was named emergency a few times, he isn't that far off, our backline is probanly our strongest area so its pretty hard for him to break in there. With Rivers leaving there may be an oppurtunity for him to step up soon.

Perhaps. He's not the worst for sure.. It's just going to be difficult to fit him in considering what's ahead of him. The other problem is that i'm not convinced he can play key defence at senior level. Seems to be undersized for a full back, and unless you have elite disposal, i'm just not sure what role he'd play in the team.

Yeah is a bit undersized but same size as Garland and Dunn, maybe he can play a role similar to them or force Joel Mac out of the side, I'm prepared to give him more time to see what he can do because there are others we can delist who have been around longer that have basically haven't shown much such as Bennell and Jetta.

WOW, i have been pretty positive about the club this trade period, realizing its all about 'net-gain' and everything.... but my god i can't help but feel like we totally f***ed up this trade period.

We literally overpayed for everything we got and got unders for EVERYTHING we traded out:
  • 20 for Dawes AND a pick downgrade (a flat 20 would have been enough if we had held out i'm sure..)
  • 3 + 13 for Hogan, 20 and Barry (slight overpayment even in conjuction with the Viney situation) not unhappy with this trade however
  • Gys for Pedo AND a pick downgrade (this is the worst trade i can remember happening ever! North didnt even want Pedo and may have delisted him if not contracted... and we traded a promising young mid for him.. AND downgraded a pick.. make no mistake, we got absolutely f***ed with this trade.. why cant Melbourne play hardball like every other club in the league?? Lets try and fix some of our promising players, help Gys build and tank and workrate - instead of literally giving him away)
  • Morton for 88 (Morton is shit.. but he's not pick 88 bad.. he has shown that he could be a good player if he gets his confidence and body right..)
  • Martin for two nothing picks that we probably wont use... (this defies believe really.. Easily the 2nd best Ruckman on our list [clark is a forward] which really doesnt have a decent Ruckman besides Jamar*. This guy had a better year than Dawes FFS a straight swap between the two would have almost been fair yet we pay pick20 for one and get f*** all for the other) *at his best
  • and to top it all off we f***ed up our compo by getting Byrnes in as a FA when we could have drafted him at 88.. would have got a 2nd round pick as net gain for both FAs without a doubt.
Extremely happy with who we got in BUT the price was far far too high and extremely UNHAPPY with who we GAVE AWAY (not traded away).
I have never prayed that a player not make it (besides Watts when i first came to this forum - because i thought he was a shit bloke - i have since changed my opinion of him) but god, i hope Gys, Morton and Martin don't make it as this will truly go down as one of the worst trade periods of all time.
Deep down i know they will though and it hurts.. Gys will play 200 games, Morton will play best 22 at WCE in the coming years and I'm sure Martin will play 22 games for Bris next year (pending inj)
I'm a broken man today..
Mountain Goat in Richmond have a 15th bday celebration tonight, going to get absolutely shitfaced on their 8.7% triple hightail..

I agree we got ripped off left right and centre. Fair enough we need to change our list around but we paid overs for players, and traded our players away for unders. Also could of traded a low pick for Byrnes. Our list managment negotiating skills are as good as our on field peformance

We didn't get ripped off. The players who've gone were useless.

We should be thankful we got a decent draft pick, and a few players who will have a red hot crack and actually contribute to our team.

Let me just say, if you're Jordan Gysberts and bringing up the tail in every single time trial and Mark Neeld tells you that you need to get your s#it together, and you do stuff all..what exactly is this guy worth?? How do you put a value on a deadweight??
