Rightio, so every year I create a 'fun' side - using an account I created for my partner years ago -, so that I can satisfy my need to pick guys I wouldn't usually (also preventing me from choosing them in my 'real' side, due to FOMO).

Love doing it, as it means I get to see how both sides go against each other, and what strategy works. Like how it looks, but it's also risky AF and the whole thing could fall in a heap halfway through Round 1, haha.

All ready for Round 1, now that I've done my little 'ritual' (barring some rookie changes - but pretty confident on most of them given the news I've heard/the emergencies I have in place/Hill will become Brodie, if he gets named).

Below are screenshots of both versions. Fun one on top, competitive one on the bottom:

Bring on Season 2021! :)

Big part of my plans, and almost a contingency for anyone in my team who doesn't perform up to scratch Week 1.

Basically, have an extra premo, Fantasia and Clark all as options to downgrade/upgrade, to get him in the week he returns, or a week later if I want to see how he goes.

For example, have Dusty and Dunks who could be underwhelming for a few reasons, but have left out Rowell to see how he goes first week back from a reco. If Rowell scores similarly and Dunks' is played forward and scores less, than I can pocket 150K or so, and then use my spare 50-80K to upgrade Clark.

My thoughts are, bring in someone for a week to sideways trade who has a good matchup, play an extra premo to downgrade, or have two midpricers in and see how they go so you can down/up to get Williams when he returns.

Toyed with having him on the bench for all of 5 seconds, but it's just not worth it given you could just trade him in and score an extra 50+ points from the guy you have in his place for Week 1.

Was first picked in my pre-season team, so I reckon anyone who had him, should definitely have a strategy to get him in Week 2 or 3, before he inevitably increases in price and gets away from you.

Hope that helps :)
I like your strategy but i like to think that all my picks will do well so i dont want to plan that way. Zwilliams is too good not to have as soon as he is availbale. If you wait a few weeks he will be 100k more expensive. I have decided to get in Short. I read somewhere houli should be back week 2 and when he is in Short averages much much less. So i can see short going gangbusters first game then i will swap him for williams. Similar price as well so wont have to find a way to get the extra cash. Caleb daniel, stewart and houston could all be keepers and i would be hesitant to trade them.

Am i missing something on draper. He is bargain priced and surely will average 80+ this year. He looked good in preseason. Yet is barely talked about. Im thinking witts and draper as my rucks.

I don’t mind Draper, he’ll definitely see a boost on his average

Witts is a great pick. People talk about value. Witts is priced 24 points under his average of 2019. The foot injury meant he couldn’t get going last year

Now if you look at 2019, Witts averaged 104 and Gawn 111, so they were 7 points apart, right now they are priced 43 points apart

Someone has to debut you have almost no midfield atm (Kelly/Yeo/Shuey that is 3 of your 4 best mids)

Trew is a decent bet although i am not up to date on WC young players so could be wrong
Could be Xavier O'Neill or Trew. But with XON priced at 310k, only Trew would be fantasy relevant.

I'd be happy to run with Trew at M10. Hopefully he gets announced during the week. Otherwise it's slim pickings to wait until the Sat night teams and find out he doesn't make the cut. For example I've currently got Jordon there, but Dees will already have played by then

This feels like a total newbie question... but how much cash do you ideally like to keep in the bank going into round 1?

I had been thinking it'd be good to have say $30-50k handy - that would let you make pretty much whichever rookie corrections you like. (And touch wood not needing to adjust any of your premos and midpricers.)

But I saw somewhere that Selby likes to basically spend as much as he can onfield, so maybe I'm being too conservative?

I've currently got $13k in the kitty. I wouldn't want to totally restructure my team just to bump this up - however I could do something like swap Stewart to Daniel and have $73k leftover (which then feels like too much left in the bank)...

Dunkley & Drew

v

Rowell & Caldwell
I'm one of those still hoping that Rowell is fit and ready to go. But of those combos I'd go Dunks and Drew. Dunks as a top 6 fwd gives him the edge over Rowell, and I don't really trust Caldwell to score that well (but I could be misreading that). If Drew is named, he should get a good run at least until SPP is back.

Obviously you'll have to be monitoring the Sat teams for Drew and ready to switch before the Essendon game.

Potential is there. But he's heavily managed. Only played half the games in a scratch match.

What possible reason is there not to get more minutes into a player at that time? He should be playing 70-80% by this point as a ruckman.

Played 58% TOG in his last outing... I think he'll be sharing duties heavily with others.

That or he misses every 2nd or 3rd game for a rest.

Pick the best squad you think you can and go with it.

If you have done that and have $80K left over brilliant that will be handy.

If you have done that and have $10k left over that is totally fine, gotta back in the selections you make.

If you think Stewart will be better than Daniel you have to make the pick.

Thanks mate. Good to get that reassurance. I guess the Stewart-Daniel was a bad example. Swapping premos just for extra bank is a bit drastic

Am I better to prioritise Gawn or one of the Dogs boys in Macrae/Dunkley?

Max has sort of scared me with the forward time and Jackson attending a heap of CBA’s. I still think he’ll be great, but may lose cash early. People talking about the early run, but maybe Jackson attends even more contests against the lesser likes?

Lloyd + Witts +60k
v
Grundy + Daniel

I do think Lloyd averages more than Grundy. Witts probably on par with Daniel.. so why does #2 look better?

I’d go 2 as you get two keepers

Grundy has one “average “ season at 114 and people lose their minds it seems. Are we forgetting the two seasons at 120+ before that? Grundy is one of the easiest picks of the season imo
