Maybe we're going to be on tenterhooks as to who runs out right up to the match on Sunday.

Preferably this could've occurred against Melbourne when we played them.

However we get to find a few things out.

Neale's in for a busy day. You'd think they'd be confident of having a win if they stop him.
Hopefully he doesn’t get it too .

So instead of a team that was roughly equivalent to the Lions side of 2003, we go out with a team that is more like our 2009 team. We’ve still got plenty of stars and we will still beat Essendon.

My issue is with the compulsory testing when asymptomatic, only test if you have symptoms. My 11 year old granddaughter has had Covid twice, once while unvaccinated and once after her first jab, both very similar mild cold like symptoms, still waiting for her 2nd jab as they recommend you wait a while after having it. Thank heavens she is her normal jovial self and doesn't seem to have any lasting side affects.

I always like to extrapolate these issues out to the same situation in Grand Final week, if it happens then and say McCluggage, Neale, Andrews and Cameron do their AFL mandated test despite feeling fine and test positive to Covid but all have no symptoms and are feeling completely normal are we all happy with them missing the Grand Final in that circumstance?

Anyway sorry for clogging up the game day thread with Covid talk, I will leave it there.
The whole point of mass testing is to catch the asymptotic players. Because they will spread it to most of the other players and staff.

It might not severely effect all our players, but there are examples from around the world where elite athletes are getting long covid, or experiencing severe side effects.

I reckon you're onto something here, they should also change the rules so we can have 15 on the bench because then there will be enough rotations for everyone to play half the game because that's how much rest everyone will need when the whole team gets it. Hopefully they don't film all the players coughing up phlegm and blowing out snot rockets on the sideline.

Both Influenza (flu) and COVID can be fatal to certain cohorts, but AFL players are not an at risk group. In the past if an AFL player had the flu, it would be up to the individual and the club to decide whether that person was fit enough to play, and depending on the severity the individual would likely isolate. I will not be persuaded from my believe that in the past AFL/NRL players have played whilst still infectious with the flu.

The AFL like any work place is to ensure where reasonably practical, a safe place of employment, and being doubled vaccinated (I don't think triple vax is compulsory), is one such measure, within a plethora of rules and policies to ensure where practical, a safe work place is provided. Moving forward, beyond this year, does the AFL continue to conduct COVID testing where Asymptomatic individuals are automatically removed, or should it revert back to the individual and the club to decide what is appropriate. Yes asymptomatic COVID individual can still pass on the virus to another player but that can also occur with Influenza. Generally social, travel, public transport, employment restrictions have eased across the nation and generally the western world.

In a funny way I'm looking forward to this match. Excited to see who comes in and where we shuffle players.

Maybe I won't bs so joie de vivre about it if we get done by a few points.

Fwiiw myself and the wife have just tested positive. No doubt she got it off her hairdresser. Lots of headaches , no energy at all ,got the shakes a couple of times ,now just fluey with a sore throat and runny nose on the 4th day. Fingers crossed recover from here. It's not ideal so far but I've had plenty of worse colds and flu.
Covid:The best thing for the throat is to Gargle: SALT AND WARM WATER. 3 TIMES A DAY. Nothing else worked eg: Lozenges, etc. Fixed the Throat in no time.

Also take a tablet of Panadol and a tablet of Nurofen together - every 3 to 4 hours. You have to take the 2 together. You will feel a lot better.

Now we know how it was for the Eagles at the start of the season.....hopefully we recover better than they did.

...will be a remarkable effort if we win this one. If we don't, there shouldn't be any melts over selection, not trying, this one or that one useless etc.

Just try your best fellas, whichever ones of you end up on the ground come start time!

Just like they did for West Coast earlier in the year.
I wish it was but I understand why they didn't, two teams expected to have poor seasons, not the end of the world. But right now toward the latter stages of the season, where wins and losses are the most important to the final standings, doesn't sit right for me.

Most clubs at the highest level would not play someone who has the flu. In saying that, I am seriously saying that for sure there have been times where a player has played with the flu but it's not a common occurance at the highest level of the game. Treating Covid like the flu is dangerous. Covid is many times more infectious than the flu hence why I believe that should a club knowingly play a player who is covid positive in 2022, 2023, .... the opposing club and AFL would come down pretty hard on them without a doubt..............SERIOUSLY.
Treat Covid the same as the flu at your own peril. If I test Covid + again, I will isolate for 7 days no matter how good or bad I feel. If I have the flu, I probably wouldn't isolate but I would be aware of what I have and treat it with the respect it deserves depending on how I feel.

Back in the day I was at a triathlon where a young man died - I personally witnessed it, and it was the worst thing I've ever seen. His wife and two very young children were in the beach watching the resuscitation.

He had the flu but because he'd been working toward the event for a year, and spent a lot of money coming to Qld with his family he decided to do the event even though he wasn't over the flu.

The talk then was that healthy young men can get an enlarged/inflamed heart with the flu, and in rare cases it causes heart attacks when strenuously exercising.

Any drs here who can confirm? Cause if it's true, clubs would be all over it and not taking risks with players.

I'm pretty sure covid had caused myocarditis in young people. Again, can anyone confirm?

It's been 3 years and those who want to be vaccinated are vaccinated, eventually we need to live with it... however as On the quiet posted nothing can be done this year as the supposed integrity/fairness of the competition re AFL Covid protocols needs to be maintained.

It is all a risk benefit analysis, as someone who would be considered as an at risk individual I have no problem with mingling with the community and life going back as close to pre Covid as possible with obvious exceptions eg. aged care/hospitals.

That's a fair point about long COVID, but recent preliminary studies have indicated that it is more likely in females over 50 years of age, but it has different impacts on individuals

I do appreciate your point, but my position is that as the general restrictions have relaxed so much, there is a reasonable chance that an AFL player could pick up COVID within the community. Could even pick up COVID hugging and taking photographs with the fans after a game.

I understand your point, but I just dislike seeing the season compromised when a team can loose half a dozen or so players to COVID. I just think in 2023 all AFL players should be updated with the vaccination requirements at the time (so third or fourth vax should be compulsory) and clubs should decide if a asymptomatic player is fit enough to play. I believe players have been for years potentially passing on influenza whilst playing matches. Unless the next strain of COVID in 2023 is severe, lets get on with learning to live with it.

the big test to come is not just for our club, but for the whole league. Will multiple teams be impacted at the same time? I'm thinking the phones will be busy with the coaches trying to make sure their players are homebodies :p

I haven't paid any attention to the HS protocols regarding covid so will have to see what happens I guess. I hope our midfield are up and about. THats if we still have one. A few more days to go...

Just a side note, when Bailey was out with HS protocol the other week, was that from a close contact? or did he have covid himself.

Under the current AFL COVID protocols, yes I agree the AFL would and should come down hard. The AFL policy next year needs to be flexible in regards to the severity of any new strains and mandatory HSP. AFL players are not an at risk group with any of the current strains.

As long as all AFL players are up to date with the number of COVID vaccinations at the time of the season, then the decision to play an Asymptomatic case should be left to the club, as it is with influenza (which can be serious to certain cohorts) There are virtually no social restrictions anymore so a player could pick up COVID anywhere.

I have posted enough on this. What will be will be.

I wonder if there will be any rustiness come next week's game against GWS. The guys missing this week would've only played 2 games in about 5 weeks.
When I had Covid earlier in January, it took me a full month to get back to 100%, still cough if I laugh too hard.

Wouldn't want to be an athlete and have Covid. However maybe being more fit would help more with the recovery process ?

Darcy Parish out for a month with a calf! Evening things up a little

Lachie Neale will surely be named captain.

Have been remuniating on this and I think instead of looking who we have out, look at who we have in - IF - yes IF - we have no more forced changes.

In the middle we have pretty much our starting mids (O, Lachie, JL and Hugh) and with Fort our rucks when everything was working. Up forward, we are stlll pretty formidable with Charlie, Joe, Linc, Cam, Zac and Eric - lets be honest thats pretty envious for any team. Sure down back we are a bit thin, but we still have Adams and Payne and Lester as tallish players and then Starc and Noah.

I know our last 7 players falls away but that still includes Mitch and some of Nakia, Dev and a few other inexperienced players, but surely we should still account for Essendon so come on folks, we've got this - lets be positive.
