Our mids lack discipline? What? :/ Our midfield competes very well, and was just starting to put more and more pressure on as the year progressed. Did lack some clearance power at times, but with star ballers like Swallow and Prestia on the sidelines, along with Rischitelli, not surprising.

Mids aren't the problem, especially with Rischitelli coming back from injury. Young boys were just starting to adapt at AFL level. Carlton game a case in point. They barely had a clean I50.

Watch us next year with our third year mids. We'll smash it! :D

I rate Shaw highly, definitely a best 22 player and very versatile.

What is that Hawks supporter on about... as far as I can recall last time we played the hawks it wasn't our midfield which lacked discipline..

After just watching the replay of the Qclash at Metricon I am far more confident in out midfield stocks, in that game we had Swallow, Rischitelli, Prestia, Russell, Weller, caddy and Hunt all fully fit rotating through the midfield playing that inside role. I will agree though gotassieboys on too many occasions were youngsters drawn to the ball or didn't work hard enough defensively, something that hopefully comes over time. Our midfield lacks someone to play the Brad swell type role, at every stoppage you will see him defensive side of the pack. Im hoping that Murphy's inclusion will allow Stanley to move into this role or Maybe Horsley, Possibly Hine.

*Edit; Kenny hinkley sums it up perfectly at about the 2:40 mark

Horsely will step up again with another AFL quality pre season, will be our mature age Barlow ;)

Stanley and Horsely are 2 decent contested ball winners. Our midfield is our strength, even in our first year we could beat half the teams in clearances/stoppages...its just after that when we get the ball, and when we dont have the ball. But obviously from game 1 to now, we have improved significantly.

All in all content with the progress.

Brown, Dixon up forward. Shaw's a utility and can be played nearly anywhere. Thompson's flexibility isn't quite as nice, so he might be stuck in the 2s for a bit.

Remember, Horsley and Aaron Hall missed half of the pre-season since they were picked up in the drafts close to Christmas.

They missed the entire Arizona/fitness aspect of the pre-season. A full pre-season will help them considerably, I would wager.

Yes, but no game time is a great way to see kids start looking for other opportunities.

I don't understand the Gilham trade unless Bock is in a lot worse position than we thought.

I mean it's not like performing in the NEAFL isn't an upgrade over playing in the U-18s ? NEAFL time executing against Brisbane and Sydney reserves isn't a HORRIBLE way to develop. And I think you can count on a few injuries along the way that will give way to opportunities for defenders to rotate into our senior side for experience. Guys like Hutchins and Hine probably don't get that chance last year without injuries to Tape and Bock so early in the season.

Any idea what GCFC would offer for Gilham? I assume you would prefer a player rather than a pick as you are reducing the size of your list.

He's not a free agent, is he?

But no idea. Have no clue what his worth would be.

Outside of the Hawks 22, didn't play much in 2012, has done an ACL, late 20s in age. I wouldn't expect much to be given on our end with those factors all included.

Just had a listen to the TWR podcast.

Damo thinks that we're quite interested in Gilham. Still a lot to go under the bridge, and a deal would more likely be done next week than this week.

He also said GWS was showing interest in him. Other than that though, no-one else is keen.

Three full seasons before we start to rise they reckon. Not sure if they meant into the eight or out of the bottom four.

I would think the latter. I sure as hell hope we dont have severe injuries this year and get some continuity in the team, got quite sick of the 4-5 changes every week.

I'm hoping for 5-8 wins.

It obviously depends on who is on the table as far who a club picks up.

IMO it is essential to have a strong mid-field if a team is to compete. It is unacceptable that GCS mids lack the discipline to follow team rules for the entire game.

I imagine the coaching staff have to determine whether their present playing list can step up in 2013 or whether to bring in more mid-fielders.

Stating the obvious the mid-fields determine the number/speed/accuracy of entries into forward and backline.

My gut feel is barring a top level player being available then the Suns will attempt to target the on-ballers.

Hi guys I did not want to give the impression of slagging off the midfield/onball players.

My comment was more around the "grey matter" than their ability.

The game is won by movement from the centre. Obviously forwards and backs are needed. However if the midfield is getting smashed or lose concentration for periods during the game, then it is a tough road to win.

Any bloke on any AFL list can play good footy, or they would not be recruited.

The elite (aka Ablett) have the ability to concentrate for 100% of the game. Most of the onball players are still very very young and the addition of an experienced larger body would help them mature (additionally Caddy is gone).

That is why I am a huge rap for Warnock's 2012 season. At times the ball was coming in like a missile and he was the number 1 man in defence.

It will be interesting to see if my opinion mirrors the new recruits that are shortly added to our list. Having said that,if Tippett was available!!!!

Hickey + Hine + #25 I think would get the #13. Not sure Hine will get to Saints though?

The age of their midfield with Hayes, Dal Santo and departing Goddard makes me think they are the most likely to have opportunities for younger midfielders?

St Kilda for spoon in 2014 and most likely to have the most opportunities coming up in my opinion.

Official trade for Caddy details:

Geelong receive Josh Caddy
Gold Coast receive pick 15 (compensation pick) & pick 55

Ok so now we have in the top drawer

1st Round Compo (Geelong) - can be used in 2013 or 2014
1st Round Compo (Geelong) - can be used in 2013 or 2014
End of 1st Round Compo (from GWS - Fremantle Rhys Palmer) - can be used in 2013 or 2014 or 2015
Pick 25
Pick 44
Pick 55
Pick 81
Pick 99
Pick 117

I think? Someone correct me if this is incorrect.

I believe we still now have the Hickey trade to do hopefully next week to St Kilda and somehow work out how to get that Goddard compensation pick for this draft, presumeably about pick 13.

Huh, this isn't correct, where did this come from?

The Compo pick is linked to Geelongs finishing position, where did pick 15 come from exile?
