I personally think it was a situation that we needed to get the best we could while we could... in 12-months the kid will walk, I have no doubt about it. He will play his guts out this season for the Suns, do everything right and tick all the boxes. He will be an extremely valuable commodity and come season's end every Victorian club will have had 12-months to tweak their books and offer him a ridiculous amount of cash he can't refuse, and he will gladly pack his bags with a grin and head home a wealthy teenager to his family and friends.

I'm not sure that this is how it would play out GCSuns. Assume he is a prodigious talent, plays his guts out, and becomes that extremely valuable commodity. If, like you say, every Victorian club start making offers for him, that can only possibly drive the deal upwards for the Suns. Competition for his services is fantastic for us. Look at the Mitch Clark scenario... two clubs in the ballpark, and one essentially had to outbid the other.

I say let's root for him to play brilliantly this year. If he still wants to go, it'll work out just fine for us :)

Agree what u say there. Next year you will get a better offer than 19 & a guy who plays VFL or an injury prone player. IMO if he stays injury free and plays a lot of games he will in all likelihood stay. Being homesick would be compounded by sitting on the sidelines unable to play.

There's the rule. Funnily enough, I thought clubs could only have a maximum of 2 "veteran" players on their list, apparently not.
That was correct at some point, it just got changed a few years back.

Good work on not bowing to Caddy's demands. His dad cant be that sick to nominate 1 club and if its true you accepted Melbournes offer and he refused to go then screw him.

Not sure when his manager said to only deal with Essendon, but that certainly made it sound like it was more to do with money than family.
According to his manager, Lenton, (but hey, what would he know, he was only there) Caddy asked to go to Essendon because he was impressed with Hird in the DC interviews.

Serious question: would any of you be all that impressed with Melbuorne, as an employer, right now?
If it were Collingwood, Hawthorn, Geelong, (even North, Rich) I could well understand it; but the Dees didn't make him a priority, any coach he spoke to @ DC is long gone, their CEO is a headless chook running around trading blokes, and they've had a heap of recent turmoil.
Can't be all that enticing.

Good on him for holding his nerve; good on him for not stiffing you guys (ie, trying to get a trade done while in-contract, rather than end-of-contract).

I'd hardly call it excellent compo. The names & draft picks I heard quoted were not within a bull's roar of what Caddy is worth.

At the same time FP Hurley + 19 is asking to much. ;)

Hooker + 19 was a hail mary from Essendon but its all we had to offer. If you'd told us you wanted a top 10 pick before yesterday we would've gone shopping for that before coming to the table with you guys.

As it was we got no indication from you about what you wanted and as such tried to do a trade with what we had on the table.

Seems by Caddy's manager, neither side did much wrong, really. Caddy played his first game with his dad in hospital, at that point he wanted out. GC didn't want a bidding war, so asked Caddy to find a club he wanted to go to, he chose Essendon, Caddy's manager got an offer from Essendon.

GC only wanted compensation for what he cos them - a top 10 pick. WHich I guess is fair enough, but with the comprimised drafts for GC and GWS, was always going to be hard, apart from that Caddy seemed happy with the GC, and isn't a certainty to walk next year, but just have to see how everything goes.

Edit

Explains why there was only dealing with one club and why Essendon made an offer to a contracted player.

I'm glad some Essendon fans can see this from the Suns point of view. :)

I would hate for this debate to start once again in one of our threads though. Could get nasty. Since trade week has finished, can we close this thread?

What's done is done, we all have our opinions of what happened, and it's time to move on. No doubt we'll cross this bridge next year if Caddy remains un-signed. ;)

Sure, I guess it's just intersting to see how it all went down too, I don't think Essendon wre bad sports about it all, just didn't have enough to offer. Any other year, we would have had pick #9, if GC wanted a little more, it's have been easier to upgrade that pick, one way or another.

Close it up Sunny, this isn't likely to be resolved to everyone satisfaction. Plus there is a thread on the Bay if you want to continue to debate it, of which I must admit I have been guilty.

I'm not a mod, Iva. :p

Thermo or CB are our guys to do it!

That's an interesting contribution. It sounds like the Bombers did try to get pick 8 from Brisbane, so they could on-trade it to us, but they weren't prepared to offer anyone the Lions wanted either.

Sounds a little like it yes. I think thats for me the only downside with the AFL's expansion plans was 2 sides in 2 years was maybe a little too quick, had there been a delay, and Essendon had pick #9, than a deal was probably likely, it was just too much to make up with the current state of play.

This -

Hopefully if he really wants do leave at seasons end, his trade value will of gone up, and the Suns will have a better understanding of what we need for the future :thumbsu:

I Think for sure the extra year in the GC could help convince him to stay, more time to get used to it. More time to make friends settle in, and decide to stay. As for his value, I think it can increase, but deals like Judd to Carlton - he was only willing to talk to Carlton. Gunsen to the Hawks, and Burgone to the Hawks, both would only walk to the Hawks there, or would walk, and leave their clubs with nothing, and pur a price on their head via the draft)

I think it would have been tough being injured all year, away from the family at 18 years old. Then all of a sudden being offered 7 figures to go back home...its enticing because he didnt even play footy this year due to injury.

I think he will settle on the Gold Coast, after half a dozen games will get into the swing of it, some passion for the club and mateship, and will re sign by mid year.

FWIW.

I get that feeling too. I think he was a little upset with having to play the week his dad went to hospital. But, give it 12 months and I think that'll likely all blow over and he'll he happy to stay
