Essendon negotiated terribly and couldn't offer enough.

Then they went and squealed to the AFL to get a mediator on board because you blokes wouldn't cop a crap deal!!!!!!!!

They are the Augustus Gloop of the AFL.

I think Essendon has been trying to paint themselves as some sort of compassionate benefactor here. Instead they've painted themselves as something far smellier.

Gold Coast dealt fairly with every other club throughout this draft period. We haven't ripped anyone off. Although the Suns wanted to keep Caddy, we would have traded him on compassionate grounds, if a fair deal had been offered. It wasn't. I believe our club will still treat Josh & his family with compassion & try to accommodate their needs, while he remains on our list.

I'm pretty sure Hunt's salary will come under the cap after the conclusion of his first contract, unless I've misunderstood how the rule was explained.

Your spot on Westie, if he stays it will be for significantly less $$$$$$$ which still may be more that League can offer.

I'm a tad disappointed with our trades week apart from O'Meara and securing an earlier draft pick.

Not securing an experienced forward, big or small, was a fail in my eyes, and is going to be a very long year ahead watching our kids yet again battle up fwd. Maybe the plan is securing out of contract Tippett next season. Could already be a done deal behind closed doors, who knows.

Warnock will help out down back well. Expect him to play as an old fashioned full back. Bock at CHB, and Thompson on the 3rd tall. But going to be a massive fight for Hutchins, May, Toy, Wilkinson, Weller, Tape, Taylor to fill the last few spots available down back. Lack of opportunity will surely see some of these guys want out next year. Resigning Tape for 2-years was a bizarre move... With Warnock Tape is definitely not required.

I think I am the only Suns supporter that wanted the Caddy trade to go through as we will get nothing for him next season. He will walk end of year, there is not a hope in hell the club will be able to match the lucrative offers he will be offered, not when we have so many other kids all in the same position. Just like Tippett will walk next season from the Crows. Only way the offers will diminish is if he has a crap year, which is the last thing we want now after turning down excellent compo.

And why the he'll did we not pick up Mitch Morton... Went to Sydney for nothing, and his upside is huge.

The AFL brought in a rule where if a club signs a player from another sport they can pay him outside the salary cap.

Hope you don't mind an Essendon SUpporter in, all things considered. I think GC played hard, but fair, I think (from reports) we offered some quality, but just not what the GC were after .

I don't mean this part with any sense of hostility, but you guys have a great developing midfield, it'll be interesting to see in a few years time, when Melb rivals are offering some of your young guys high end wages, and they can afford to walk, what will happen. I think thats when your list manager will be doing the hard work, you had the Bombers over a barrel, and played it well, in the end. I think it's almost like another club targeting Heppell, while, I think after the season he has to come out above Caddy, (though I'd admit injury played it's role there), the Bombers would play hardball too, and supporters would expect it too.

edit.

At the end of the day - the salary cap sets that standard.

I'd hardly call it excellent compo. The names & draft picks I heard quoted were not within a bull's roar of what Caddy is worth.

I think judging, CGS agrees. But keeps in mind if he wants to head home next season, and only deals with the bombers, they could lose out if Caddy goes the draft, and Caddy puts a big price on his head (knowing what Essendon would offer, though, still has little to lose if he really wants to go to the bombers, but will accept victoria non the less.. This season, he can't walk.

I personally think it was a situation that we needed to get the best we could while we could... in 12-months the kid will walk, I have no doubt about it. He will play his guts out this season for the Suns, do everything right and tick all the boxes. He will be an extremely valuable commodity and come season's end every Victorian club will have had 12-months to tweak their books and offer him a ridiculous amount of cash he can't refuse, and he will gladly pack his bags with a grin and head home a wealthy teenager to his family and friends.

You can say the Suns will be allowing room in their cap to counter these offers for all our kids, but some of these offers are going to be enormous, out of our league.... just like Freo/Dees and Mitch Clark, Dees/GWS & Scully. We can't keep them all and this was a chance to get something for 1 of them while we could.

Now I don't know the end offer that was put forward to the Suns, I can only guess pick #19, Hooker & a Dyson/Slattery/Gumbleton/Davey was offered? Is this ideal, no... but would it help the club move forward... yes. Pick 19 is handy this year, especially when GWS has 11 of the top 20 picks and it trumps our current 24. Having 19 & 24 would have been nice? Hooker will be twice the player Warnock is, and Dyson or Slattery could have been used as our experienced midfield tagger for 2-3 years while the kids matured. Not going to get into the Gumbleton debate if he was offered, #2 pick, oozes talent, dodgey body...

So next season we will get... ummm... a dud pick or possibly nothing.

In the end it was Caddy's own fault he didn't get a trade... giving the Suns 24-hours notice he wanted out was poor form on his behalf. Should he have made it clear of his desire to head home from the beginning of the week, a deal would have been done and dusted, the Suns would have obtained the top 10 pick it wanted, end of story.

I believe it's Caddy's management that played this out poorly. If he really wanted to go he would have nominated any VIC club that could actually deal...Bulldogs or Demons have way better to offer than Essendon.

He will buy into GC and we will match Essendons monetary value I'm sure of it. This would have been planned and expected, although not 12 months early...but next year.

GC's finances and salary cap planning will have been prepared for this and will be on an assault to sign all the kids next year that are contracts are due to end 2012.

I just read a HS article where Essendon CEO said we were asking for pick #19 and Hurley... now if that had gone through I would have pissed my pants in excitement! Oh well, we tried ;)

GC Suns I hear your frustration but the bigger picture whether Caddy goes or not is for the Suns to set a standard of not being a push over at the trading table. Essendon played a dirty game and should not be rewarded for it.

Frankly if he goes he may end up as the next N Buckley, leaves the lions and misses out on 3 premierships.

Fraser will probably be moved on end of 2012 so that will free some up, as well as Bock moving onto a veteran's list I think? so 50% of his wage will not effect our Salary Cap is my understanding.

Bock can't move onto the veteran's list at the suns, it's only for players with 10 years of service at one club, not overall in the comp.

Thanks, is there any other stipulations for veterans list? I'm unsure and haven't been able to find any articles on what it entails.

Cheers

Ashcroft said Caddy told them at the end of the season that he wanted to go back to Victoria. Not sure when his manager said to only deal with Essendon, but that certainly made it sound like it was more to do with money than family.

Hurley would have been a useful pickup, but they'd have never agreed to that. Basically they wanted us to trade one of our best players in exchange for blokes who can't even get a regular game for them.

I believe our experienced recruits are on front-ended contracts, so we'll have more money in our cap to pay guys like Caddy & Swallow later on. I wouldn't give up on him staying beyond next season. I reckon the Suns treated him well this season & I expect them to next year as well.

Veteran Players
Under AFL player rules, each club may nominate or list any number of what are called Veteran Player’s.
  • In order to be eligible for classification as a Veteran a player must have been the age of 30 as at September 30 in the relevant AFL season and be on the primary list of the AFL club for at least 10 years or in the case of Port Adelaide since the inception of the club.
  • From 2006 there is now no limit on the number of veteran players a club can list, as long as the player meets the required classification.
There's the rule. Funnily enough, I thought clubs could only have a maximum of 2 "veteran" players on their list, apparently not. Though this link suggests that the amount that comes under the cap will likely change once free-agency comes in.

http://www.afl.com.au/tabid/208/default.aspx?newsid=89810

The Veterans List allowance will be amended to apply to players with 10 years service at one club and will be based on a set amount of TPP per player calculated as a percentage of TPP.

Would you think this carries over to GCFC now? Since our inception? Just looking up Bock and Fraser now...
Bock 20-03-1983 (currently 28)

Fraser 05-01-1982 (currently 29)
Will be the age of 30 as of Sept 30 next year so would he fall into our Veteran's list. Mind you will prob be moved on next year...

It doesn't really explain what the veteran's list is entitled too?

I highly doubt it, that article appears to have been written pretty close to 2006 (Port's 10th year in the comp), so that's why the loophole is present for them. Also, (despite his age) I'm pretty sure Bock hasn't been in the system 10 years yet anyway.

You're pretty much spot-on with Fraser, but as you said, it's unlikely you'll keep him that long.

Whatever that percentage is now, it's certain to change after 2012. The exact details are probably hidden away somewhere in the CBA.

Well done.

We'll give you a much better deal next year.

North will be able to offer better picks next year because they will certainly finish below Essendon. But they wont be able to afford Caddy. They will be lucky to just stay afloat imo.
