We had a pretty obvious deficiency in our midfield, preferring to rebuild from the KPPs out.
So, where does our midfield sit now? Is it fixed?

I think we have a decent midfield that has alot of points of difference.

Peatling, Crouch, Dawson, Soligo, Draper, Cummins, Dowling, Scholl, Taylor, Edwards, Pedler, Rankine, Jones, Berry, Curtin and Laird is the main midfield group this year.

Inform we have Rankine, Scholl, Soligo, Crouch, Dawson and the new ins of Peatling, Cummins and Draper. I think Draper goes in day 1, and Cummins on a wing should be an in.

For the first time in a while, we have plenty of competition for list spots.

From that group of mids, I think the following make game 1, excluding injuries.
Dawson
Soligo
Draper
Rankine
Crouch
Scholl
Berry
Peatling

For me our best midfield rotation still has Crouch involved in a lot of CBAs. He is a very good pack to pack pure inside mid.

Then
Rankine
Sog
Taylor
ANB
Curtin
Peatling
Draper

All part of the rotation between wing/forward/CBA/bench.

Rachele to play the role Murphy has with starting position up forward, but then sit outside stoppages to act as stoppage mid but no CBAs.

I reckon Dawson should play less actual midfield this year and start across HB. But then change roles depending on game situation. His biggest asset is his kick, but his hand to foot lag is slow. So get him into more uncontested space.

Be nice to be able to add Pedlar to the midfield rotation as well.

Rachele?

For me:

Rankine, Soligo, Peatling as our starting mids, with Dawson and Draper being rotated as a fourth and fifth inside midfield. Initially I was skeptical of Draper making the move, but 22 disposal average in the SANFL seniors has me thinking fifth.

You don't waste talent in a graveyard role. Right now, we need Rachele to be a 35+ goal small forward to further justify moving Rankine into the midfield.

I would play Dawson midfield but leave it up to him to decide when he is attacking mid or defensive.

I'd start him at half forward and use him as/let him be the General. Midfield in my opinion needs to be traditional, defend the contest (centreman) Crouch, space maker oppo foil (ruck rover)(Peatling) and the see ball get ball offensive(rover)(Rankine).
Chopout RR - Curtin - and best contest beast avail
Chopout R - Soligo - Draper - Rachele (maybe still too pretty)? I'd even be tempted to try Sholl in that role.
Stick to the simple wombat stuff, eat roots and leaves.
What will VB implement... history says he'll use some form of tip toe poetry as previous and leave a big hole for the oppo to exploit time and time again. Nice guys finish last, **** nice!

I don't think you have a choice with Dawson, you have to go defensive (and to be fair to Dawson, he is a much better defensive mid). Adelaide just needs that intercepting power and reinforcement off the half back line to really smooth out the lack of star power on the half back line. Whereas, offensively, Adelaide is flushed with talent.

It's not a graveyard role.

Keays is more the graveyard HF. But very good at it.

ANB has played the stoppage mid role well as has Zac Bailey.

It is an important role for good teams.

Swapping out Rachele for Murphy is a massive upgrade.

We really missed Worrell when he was out.

Murphy role and pushing a small forward to be shallow and around the contests on the wing is a graveyard role. It's an "important" role, but only in the sense of this one of the more reliable ways to add a bit of extra production to a side without copping a cap hit and it being a role where you can get away with a borderline AFL quality player. It's a career killer for the players with it. Not to mention Rachele already does it and more with how we currently use him.

Swapping out Murph for Rachele is just a waste of Rachele talent. The role your circling with Rash is the primary small forward role and taking some responsibilities away from Rankine.

I see what you are saying, but just think Rachele can do more than be a SF.

But not quite a CBA mid...

Thinkinh as I type this though, I guess that kind of role is a waste of his talent.

We probably are better off him being an elite SF, rather than an ok stoppage mid.
