20 years to the day since the 'Silver Bullets' shocked the world with an Olympic medal in the Athens 4x400m.

We haven't had too much success in World/Olympic relays over the years (much much tougher than swimming)

1948 OLY W4x100m SILVER
1956 OLY W4x100m GOLD
1956 OLY M4x400m SILVER
1990 WJ W4x400m GOLD
1995 WC M4x100m SILVER
1995 WC W4x400m BRONZE
2004 OLY M4x400m SILVER

Mia Scerri just missed out on bronze in the heptathlon. Tkacova just ran a little too well in the 800m to pip her at the very end.

Delta Amudzovski just jumped 6.58 and leads the long jump with one jump left. Cmon girl!!

Stoilova about to run in the 100m.

And Marley Raikiwasa claimed bronze in the discus with a throw of 56.25.

Some real encouraging results!

Was great to hear "Downunder" playing in the stadium as Delta sped down the runway to reclaim the lead :)
She wins!! Last jump was a foul but looked big. To think her winning jump would’ve been T-10 in the Olympic final. You’d imagine she’ll be our national champion before too long.

I looked up Marley's profile as a couple of Raikiwasa boys have played for the Port Adelaide Magpies and moved to other clubs after Port's AFL players all played for the Magpies post end of 2013 season. It confirms she is from SA - Tea Tree Gully and it confirms she is related to them.

They have those strong, powerful Fijian genes

Sporting family: parents played high level sport, mum and aunty played state league netball, dad played state rugby, her aunty was State boxing champ and uncles played SA State AFL.

Bit of a 'hump day' at these Champs though Marley's Tea Tree Gully team-mate Tryphena Hewett has an outside chance of a Pole Vault medal.

Better days to come for Australia from tomorrow (though we are still leading the medal table for now).

The 4 year cycle starts up again and he's done it again.

Last night in Poland at the Silesia Diamond League meet, Mondo Duplantis broke his own world pole vault record he set in Paris, and jumped/vaulted 6.26.

He learnt well from Bubka, go a cm at a time to get the WR cash bonus once or twice a year even if you clear the old WR height by 20cms.

6.26 Duplantis
6.25 Duplantis ..... Paris Olympics
6.24 Duplantis..... 2024

I think World Athletics are alarmed by how much cash they are forking out to Duplantis that they are trialling a new height calculation in a test event this weekend. Actual height cleared as opposed to bar height. So if the bar is at 6.27 and you clear it by 3cm, you get the measurement at 6.30m instead of 6.27 and only 6 attempts like most other field events.

They are also trialing a "every jumper wins a prize" event in long jump where they will measure actual jump distance instead of distance from the take off board. Therefore no more fouls.

Also trialling a mile steeplechase.

Will be interesting to see how this all pans out.

The World Record bonuses are mostly paid by sponsors not World Athletics.

These trial events won't count as World Records as the rules are different to those in the actual rulebook.

Before this championships Australia's 4x100m relay teams were seen by some (inc me) as medal chances.

4x400m teams? Pfft... will we even enter any?..

So far:

Mixed 4x400m – GOLD
Women's 4x400m – comfortably into final – medal chance
Men's 4x400m – comfortably into final – medal chance

LFG!!!

Yes, true they won't count as records as they aren't official events anyway, just trials of new measurement systems and distances but would be interesting to see what the feedback is about it.

Just catching up on results now from overnight. Great relay chances for medals. Having a great meet so far!

Woke up about 5am looking for the Diamond League live stream to watch the meet from Rome but couldn't find the official stream, just some pirated ones, so used Stan to watch and first event I saw was the 110m hurdles and Perth - French-Aussie runs for France Sasha Zhoya win the race.

Found THIS WORLD ATHLETICS PAGE - that basically says in Oz you can only legally watch the Diamond League on Stan, which I reckon is a change post Paris.

AdelaideGT is this your understanding as well?

Saw Jess Hull push Faith Kipyegon for most of the 1500m like she has in a few other races this year, but in last 100m Kipyegon kicked, Jess couldn't keep up and in last 20m she was passed by 2 Ethiopians Hailu who didn't go to Paris and Haylon who only made the SF in Paris.

The pace maker got way out in front of the pack between 200 and 600m, stuffed it up and might have been why the race was won in 3.52.89 and 2nd was 3.54.16 and Jess ran 3.54.98 and not closer to 3.50.

Last race was the men's 100m final which Leslie Tebogo of Botswana continues his great form and won easily in 9.87, from yanks Christian Coleman and Fred Kerley.

Then watched a bit of Paralympics before U/20 champs from Lima evening session started.

Apart from maybe a Commonwealth Games, I've never seen Oz win 5 medals in a single evening session of a world class athletics meet. Lewis and Gout won silvers in their 200m finals, Hollingsworth and Craig in their 800m finals and during all this 15 year old Mason McGroder jumped a PB of 7.80m to win bronze.

McGroder turns 16 mid September. The world's best for a 15 year old is 7.90 by a Italian Daniele Inzoli in May this year. He turned 16 a couple of weeks ago and didn't qualify for the final finishing a disappoint 26th. Last year he set the world best for a 14 year old at 7.48.

If I had to put $100 on which Aussie athlete who will win a medal at Brisbane 2032, and is at this meet, or is 22 or younger ie will be 30 or younger in Brisbane, it would be McGroder.

The track events are bloody competitive and as good as the 4 silver medallists of today are, they are going to hit a huge field of competition as they become open age athletes.

Still bloody exciting future for the Aussie kids, and we have never had Oz with 2G 4S 4B = 10 medals before and 2nd in total medals to the yanks (12) and 5th overall by gold/silver/bronze ranking with about 25% of the meet to go.

The placings table shows how strong this squad is. 21 top 8 places for 105 pts 2nd only to USA which have 26 top 8 places for 129 pts. This is unheard of by an Oz team at a global athletics championships. Sure at an Oceania or Commonwealth championships but not a global championships.

Then next 3 are China 19/95pts, Ethiopia 12/67pts and Kenya 11/58pts.

The yanks who in my opinion didn't send a very strong sprint squad, finally kicked into place and have gone top of the medals table, as have Ethiopia.

Kenya and Jamaica have been a bit disappointing by their standards, but China, and South Africa have joined Oz doing well on the medals table.

The 2 x 200m finals. The female commentator is Shithouse.

Torrie Lewis ran a PB 22.80 for 2nd as did Jessica Milat 23.12 for 4th.

Gout Gout ran a PB 20.60 for 2nd and Zachary Della Rocca ran 6th in 21.22.

Two Oz summers ago Aiden Murphy looked like being the next big thing in Oz sprinting. He ran a 20.61 (Nov 2021) and then 3 months later 20.41 as an 18 year old. He turns 21 in mid October and his career has stalled and his fastest time in 2024 is 20.87. That's why you have to be cautious about expecting great juniors to continually improve, as they get older. Its not a straight line thing except for the absolute great ones.
