AUSSIE WATCH - SUNDAY

1435 WHJ F Nicola Olyslagers & Eleanor Patterson

2240 MLJ F Liam Adcock
2328 W1500 F Georgia Griffith
0021 W4x4 F from Ellie Beer/Torrie Lewis/Ella Connolly/Bella Pasquali/Jemma Pollard

Not too many events to go, but Aussies in the hunt for possibly four more medals. Looking forward to that High Jump this arvo.

3 medals and a 5th for Marschall in the PV sees Oz start the final day 5th on the placings table.

Olyslagers and Patterson should make sure Oz stay top 10 if they produce their expected efforts. Pretty sure that will be a first.

Edit 2022 in Belgrade Oz finished 7th on placings table,, silver to Olyslagers, bronze to Maloney in hepthalon and 6 placings between 5th and 8th.

Nicola spent much of her off-season training altering her run-up to generate more speed. Seems to be working fine so far.

She jumped an Australian Record in her first competition (Canberra) last year. What can she do in her first comp of 2025?

Patto's 2nd attempt at 1.99 was poor. Will have to do something special to win.

Nicola for the 2nd time at 1.99 clears bar easily but leg clips bar.

Well done Nicola.

Fine sportsmanship as always, leading the clapping for Eleanor's final attempt even though it could have cost her gold.

In 1968 - two Australian women finished 1-2 in the Olympic 80m Hurdles final. That's the only time we have ever gone 1-2 in a global championships.

Hope Liam Addcock jumps as well as he did at Perth Classic and if so he probably will medal. His 8.33 is the 3rd best for 2025 with 2nd best Galyle of Jamaica (8.34) and Furlani of Italy (8.37) in the final tonight.

Oz has achieved a rare feat so far at a global meet that after 60% of finals have been completed, Oz is 3rd on medals table ranking by gold behind USA and GBR's 2-0-0, the 5 medals won is 2nd in total behind USA's 10, the Swiss have 3 and a number of countries have 2, and 2nd on the placing table behind USA.

If Addcock wins a medal then Oz probably is guaranteed a top 5 finish on the placings table for the first time ever at a world indoor champs.

A lot of people are also predicting a medal in the 4x400m relay.

We have only sent a W4x4 once before - and it was a late addition - but Tania Van Heer, Susan Andrews, Tamsyn Lewis & Catherine Freeman won us a silver then. That is a much better team than we have here in China but the opposition is probably not of such a high standard outside the favourite US team.

I will be interested to see if both Torrie Lewis and Ella Connolly are actually named (one has to be) and how they run. Torrie hasn't raced a 400 for a couple of years now and - on paper - is the slowest of the 5 in our squad.

At least the Aussies have drawn one of the outside lanes which is a very good thing indoors.

Georgia Griffith is not considered much chance of a medal in the 1500m but she is very talented and it's not impossible.

Can't believe 7 didn't have an ad for their live coverage of next Saturday's Maurie Plant meet during or straight after that Gout Gout special...

Gutsy, gutsy run by unheralded Georgia Griffith.

Put herself in with a chance right from the get-go. Just missed a medal but rewarded with an Area Record.
yeah she pushed herself hard and only last 80m or so she wasn't in a minor medal placing with Tsegay way out in front for all of the race.

Addcock has jumped 8.28, 8.28, 8.17 to be placed 2nd behind Italian Furlani who has gone X 8.30, X, and Jamaican Pinnock is 3rd jumping 8.20, 8.28 and X so far.

Now that Team Oz has finished with another medal to almost double our previous record medal tally, I guess I can go to sleep happy.

Good night all!
Any word on split times? Looked like Beer ran a good opening leg, Pasquali held her own and Pollard ran well and stormed home. 2nd girl who’s name I’ve forgotten off the top of my head maybe the slowest, but again without split times it’s hard to judge. That was just the naked eye.
