I don't see how its fair that now we are forced to trade with hawthorn
It's not fair, but you're not forced. There's a bit of mutually assured destruction going on right there.

If I were Essendon, I'd be looking for options to double down on that number one pick that they'll have provided Brisbane don't pinch a priority pick in front of their noses.

We've been pretty fair in recent trades, and laughed at in bigfooty for 'paying overs'

Also remember hawks tried to broker something with GWS when JOM was one of those ontradeable 17yo.

Maybe he didn't like being horse traded like that

I'd take him just so the Hawks don't take him. We'd get Saunders to work his magic on his knee and turn him into an absolute gun. Then we'd go down the norf route and trade him to the Hawks when he's 25 in his prime while get some dud back in return.

The funniest thing I read all day.

I'd say to protect players, have a fair minimum wage (e.g. $120K or so) and then get rid of the minimum 95% cap spend. So if you're Brisbane, you can pay a lot of your players that continually do not perform, minimum wage and then have room to recruit a couple of top guns to the club while top teams will find it hard to do that.

Don't be surprised to see this bloke also in the brown & gold next year lads ... Offer has already been made, being seriously considered

I've said it before, Hodge Mitchell Burgers replaced by Fyfe O'Meara Mitchell in 2018. Imagine the tears.

Can't hate Hawthorn for being at the best at what they do, the challenge is to every other club to better and have a point of difference. I'm a massive Essendon supporter but realistically in his mind what can Essendon offer that the Hawks can't? A great facility perhaps (not sure what the hawks is like).

Hawthorn can turn around and say hey we are the best in the business come play finals and let's get you a flag son.

Unless you were aware of another batch of players being picked up, ie Fyfe, Mitchell, Hawthorn won't be winning the flag again anytime soon.

This is what happen when you try to have a half baked free agency with a draft system. Players who aren't yet free agents will still wish to exercise their rights as free agents. The rules assert they must be traded, usually for draft picks, but clubs at the bottom covet them (far too much) and have little to give up in the way of players. Only clubs for whom draft picks are a worthless currency can pull this off. That's Hawthorn, and also a model Sydney has used for over a decade.

The solution: abolish the draft, and establish full free agency. Keep the competition even by rigorously enforcing the salary cap.

Meanwhile, Hawthorn are making out like bandits while the rest of the comp stodgily tries to recruit as if players still can be told where to go. The draft is ineffective at distributing talent, time to kill it.

No the draft needs to stay and the clubs need to be given the Trade power not the player, similar to the model the NBA have.

The FA qualification period would also then need to be lowered to balance this out, this in my opinion would assist the AFL in their quest to equalise the competition.

But as stands today I hope to be welcoming O'Mera to the Hawks very soon.

Yes, you have been - the Burgoyne trade is probably the best case-in-point here. The issue is just whether you've got the cattle to be able to manage it in this case I think, even with Hill's departure.

Jaegar nominating the Hawks just means the onus is on the Hawks to try and get a deal done that GC would deem fair.

If Jaegar walked into the draft, he'd surely be too good for a club to not take a punt on so it surely won't come to that...

Wow! can't wait to see the meltdown when Mitchell announces the same thing after the Swans go down on Saturday.

Nevermind when we sign Fyfe as a FA next year.

Geelong picked up Dangerfield and a couple of also-rans and went from 10th to premiership favourites.

Hawthorn are still top-4.

Exactly, as a someone you don't have to give up anything for he's too good to last in a PSD.

Hawthorn has just won 3 in a row, odds are their run is over and some other teams are about to take over the domination.
If JOM ends up at Hawks I do so hope their reign is over and no more flags for the next 10+years, give other teams a bit of glory, inc GC.

No disrespect to Hawks but what you have achieved over the last half a dozen or so years is a fantasy dream for most other teams and supporters.

So much of "oh.. the sky is falling coz O'Meara nominated Hawthorn" in this thread. Extrapolate this, and next year Fyfe will go for Free Agency with Hawthorn... the sky is falling, blah blah.

Players look at club loyalty, ability to play in the senior team, home state, length of contract, chances of finals and annual salary in a combination.

Brad Hill is going to Freo. Chances are he's going there for money.
Dion Prestia is coming to Melbourne, and picked Richmond for home, contract length, & salary. Clearly not for finals likelihood in 2017.
Tom Mitchell is coming to Hawthorn for more opportunity, otherwise he's a father son recruit at Sydney, and would have stayed there.
Jacksch picked Carlton 2 years ago over the Saints (thank god!).
Patfull chose GWS coz he's got links in Sydney.
McCarthy could have been playing in the inaugural finals for GWS, but instead is rotting away in WAFL due to homesickness.
Lovett picked the Saints over others coz of the chance to play finals (didn't work out unfortunately)

But, just a blanket potting of O'Meara is uncalled for.
