Yep, bombers and carlton made up ground during our 30 year hiatus from relevance but once we were back and meant business we showed we were on another level. Pies in all fairness raised the bar last season with their attendances
first season post covid without attendance restrictions and the best fixture in afl.

give us one and we'll break their attendance

we dwarfed their fans in the 2018 prelim

I don't recall on what platform, but I recall hearing the late great Ron Barassi speak about rivalries.

He would know being part of the Melbourne teams during their rivalry with Collingwood, at Carlton during their rivalries with both Richmond and Collingwood, and at North during their rivalry with Hawthorn.

According to him, the biggest and fiercest rivalry was between Richmond and Carlton. He said both teams genuinely hated each other.
all the old campaigner carltoon fans hate Richmond more than colonwood

I hate them both equally . essendon are an irrelevant minnow to me

Sheedy hated Carlton because of Robert Walls and the biggest sniper of his Era Vin Waite.
Waite would strut around belting players half of his size, but Neil Balme and Ricky McLean showed everyone how pissweak he really was.
Balmey scared the shit out him in the '73 GF.

And that was before he broke his nose.

Bring back the biff.
my nephew said he doesnt watch footy anymore cos of how soft the free kicks are these days

cant touch a campaigner

When it looked like Walls would be our coach my brother ran into Merv Keane and asked for his opinion. Merv said and I quote: 'I hope not. We all called him the head kicker'.

still cant believe they let that piece of shite coach Richmond and knifed john northey

sheedy created the druggies / carltoon rivalry , before 1999 it didnt exist

the campaigner hated cartloon because he was a Richmond player

always find it funny when the afl say druggies/ carltoon is a traditional rivalry when before 1999 nobody had ever heard of it

the biggest rivalries in this sport is Coll carl and Richmond vs eachother and it will always be that way

druggies are a 4th wheel. they never had big support before the 90s flags

only people who lived in essendon followed them
Sheeds was a genius back then. He created rivalries between Essendon and a number of clubs that previously never existed (including a few that no longer exist today, to be fair).

V Collingwood - Anzac Day blockbuster was his baby
v Richmond - Dreamtime
v Hawthorn - the 80's skirmishes
v North - marshmallows
v Weagles - the scarf wave
v Carlton - the 90's skirmishes

He even tried to fabricate a few others, like "Country Match" v Geelong, Western suburbs rivalry v Bulldogs etc.

The end result of all this was that during those days, apart from building the fanbase of the club with the prospect of numerous big matches each season, the Essendon players became conditioned to the blockbuster atmosphere. This served them very well in finals, and the crucial games which got them into finals.

Thomas managing to finish sixth in the North Melbourne B&F when he only played 12 games for the year is a horrific indictment on that club

Even more so seeing it took him half a dozen games to get proper match fit! :D

Honestly the only time I've ever been a bit embarrassed to hold my Tiger head up, the Walls saga.

Equivalent of asking McChins to come be our saviour president!

It is funny with Sheedy's coaching his overall finals record of 23W 20L is positive but only just. But his conversion of 9 double chance finishes into 4 flags is very tidy. But within that 7 minor Premierships for 4 flags probably doesn't suggest over-performance in finals. As usual with Sheedy, nothing is perfectly clear about where he fits in as a player or coach.

They were getting 60-70k on a Sunday against freo and port. They got monster attendances.
didnt rain once either

Richmond still holds the record for a game against an insterstate club 79k
vs bears

All true but doesn’t mean those arseholes didn’t raise the bar last year. Do I think we can replicate it? Yep, with momentum and a fresh start the fan base can get excited again. Blockbuster fatigue is real! As a supporter base, we stopped coming out for the average games

a lot of our fans stopped going cos they changed the rules to stop our dynasty

tru, and old foe of mine, bout 8 years older than me whom saw '68 '69 '70 ''72 '73 & '82 along with those other GF's the campaigners played in still mentions Balmey breaking McKays jaw and the Southby incident,to this day hes held a violent grudge and spews vitriole when discussing Richmond, says Richmond is their biggest enemy by the length of Flemington Rd.
he does bring up some cool recollections of the battles when Barrasi was coaching them tho, like the time Billy Barrot kicked 8 goals in 3 qrts after being moved fwd halfway thru the 2nd term @ princess park when we had to knock em off and keep our 1969 finals hopes alive, they were top of the ladder with only 3 games to go,the rest is history, deep down i know hes got an envious vein in his core with regards to the damage the tiges have done to them
