Matthews lost me when he took out Grant Simmons - illegally - at Waverley in 1975.

Simmo actually stopped breathing - trainers and doctor got him going quickly, fortunately.

My first final too. I remember Jimmy Edmond taking a speccy, and it was all downhill from there.

Of course our banner must have been leaked too, and our catchphrase of "Our dreams have finally come true" was countered by the Hawks much bigger banner saying "Welcome to your nightmare".

It was an absolute lesson.

He never really got going Simmo, did he? Seemed a likely type, but we were just stacked with talls in that era. I remember him playing in a star-studded Yarraville team that I think were raging favourites for the 77 VFA second-div GF - and got done. Thorpe was captain-coach, Bissett, Simmons, Sait, Merrington. Toorak Park was absolutely chockers for that one, mainly with Yarraville/Footscray supporters.

Definite low point. Even Matthews acknowledged it, saying in his book that he changed the way he played afterwards - although Neville Bruns, among others, would disagree.

Great reserves player, Simmo, but couldn't find the consistency required for regular senior footy, even though he did play some good games. I think he may have been a late bloomer, being so tall and lean. Matthews took that away from him - today he'd probably be advised to retire, given the damage he suffered.

Standout junior and a gun at Yarraville, as you say.
