I've said it before, but outgoing coach press conferences are cringeworthy.

I don't see it in any other sporting code or competition, just the AFL.

He’s been a figurehead at the club for a long time, including for (grumble, grumble) a Premiership.

The gracious thing for him to do would be to attend a press conference to thank the support he’s received from the fans along the journey. And for him to coach a final game to accept thanks from the fans.

The support he’s received along the journey has been remarkable - there were times recently when West Coast were a basket case on the field, and yet there were significant parts of the supporter / membership base lobbying for him to be retained. That wouldn’t happen at a Vic / SA club.
 
I got the impression he didn't want to be there, but did it for the sake of presenting a united front.

People in that position should be very well used to doing things they don’t want to do. Media interviews, sponsors meetings, player exit meetings, etc, etc.
