Eddie’s lack of sports management awareness has become obvious now we’ve left that relationship. It’s different to business sense, which he had.
President's of football clubs should not be dictating player's contracts & who the club retains. Eddie ran the club like a dictator. Best thing we did was move him on. His time was well & truly up.

Tom Browne reported finally what I was thinking last night around the contract for Grundy.
The agreement is that we pay $250k-$300k for Grundy is a deal between us and Melbourne only.

If they discard him to another club at the end of the year, we aren’t liable to be paying him to play anywhere else other than Melbourne.

The stakes got higher for the Dees on this one.

So if he goes elsewhere, we'll be relieved of paying him whatever it is we're paying him.
Bonus!

Let's hope Grundy goes to another club then..big chance considering we all know he's no change of ever being a forward.

It’s still possible to be paid by 3 clubs theoretically but the arrangement with us is for him to play at Melbourne
And that arrangement is not transferable.
So effectively if the Dees want to move him to another club…they will need to make an arrangement with us—-and we won’t allow the same arrangement for him to play at club 3 and still be stumping up.
Messy is an understatement here by Grundy and his management and his choice of club the Dees.
Totally misread the play here.

I don't think Grundy's going anywhere, especially if the contract talk is correct. Maybe I'm giving Melbourne too much credit, but this trade always seemed about Gawn not being up to playing a season of first ruck. Why else would they ever move him forward? If they trade Grundy they'll need another ruck.

The Grundy trade has worked in keeping Gawn healthy. Maybe he gets back in for finals, but even if he doesn't they'll want him to again reduce the load on Gawn next year. Grundy would be the one more likely to want out than Melbourne forcing him out.

He wouldn't want to leave Vic if he were to go to a third club. geelong? they were interested last time.
Geelong's the only other Victorian club that makes football sense.

If it's still going to be largely about lifestyle rather than football, then it'd be simpler to stay where he is.

Interestingly, when up to 11 players at Collingwood failed an illicit drug test, not one player received a strike for illicit drug use, even though most illicit drugs are banned substances. Josh Thomas, Lachie Keefe, Sam Murray* and Jack Ginnivan are the only Collingwood players I could find that have received a strike yet, I think we can all agree that there have been more players to have engaged in drug usage during the season. Dane Swan even admitted to it (Dane Swan unapologetic for taking illicit drugs). Remarkably, he never failed a drug test in his career.
I believe at the time of the “up to 11” Collingwood players, as the tests they were out of season and devised to get a snapshot of illicit drug use throughout the league, the positives weren’t reported on in the sense of a strike. Out of season testing is normally for performance enhancing substances only, not illicit drugs.

Josh Thomas and Lachie Keeffe, when they got done, it was because their illicit drugs were cut with a performance enhancing clenbuterol.

Sam Murray from memory had cocaine in his system on gameday, which is considered performance enhancing on gameday as a stimulant.

Grundy is a Good Back-Up for Gawn

Grundy won't be happy playing in the VFL just being a back up for Gawn .. that's not what he signed up for.
He won't be backup during the year. Whether he plays finals is the question. And agree he may want out if that doesn't happen.

I feel that Melbourne always saw this as a likely outcome. The question is whether they were upfront with Grundy on it. Moving a dominant ruck forward is nonsense. Had to be the case that Gawn's body was failing and they needed someone else to take the load for most of the year. Maybe if things went perfectly they'd keep Gawn as second ruck, but surely it was most likely that he'd take over as number 1 later in the year.

It's bizarre to me that Gawn & Grundy, who are both intelligent people agreed to this scenario. They know better than anyone that they are both just rucks and that's it.

Unless Grundy was just happy to take the money after all ..

Its why I see it as something that Gawn needed for his health. Otherwise it doesn't make sense. Maybe they even thought Gawn wouldn't be able to play first ruck at all. Now that he's gone so poorly forward and is healthy they've decided that he needs to.

Nah if they wanted a chop-out ruck they would have picked one for peanuts somewhere. You Don’t pay what they’re paying Grundy for a relief ruck.

I Think they genuinely thought the two playing together would gain then some sort of competitive advantage and it backfired massively.

What choice did Grundy have?

As much as it was sad to move him on. He signed a contract and under performed. We cant feel sorry for one of the highest money earners if his output isnt near the $$$

It essentially forced Stepho, Treloar and Phillips out. Which is majority of Eddie/Admin doing.

Treloar still stings as he wanted to stay and didnt he take a back ended contract to help out initially ?

My mistake if all my info is incorrect

I think with Treloar he actually re-negotiated his initial contract to move his payments to later years in order to help the club out. We then, under Buckley Ned Guy and McGuire, spread rumours about him to the media and forced him out of the club that he loved.

What choice did Grundy have?
He had the choice to take a pay cut. He is earning 900,000 a year and the only person that doesn't accept that he's not worth that , is himself. We wanted him to stay but to take a pay cut. So unless you are saying that Grundy deserves 900,000 a year, then it's just a silly answer
