That’s effectively him acknowledging he’s a VFL player unless Gawn goes down and that he isn’t keen on being a VFL footballer…

Having a presence like that at Collingwood after 10 years of service is one thing, but a guy like that in the mix 3/4 of the way through his 1st season at the club is cancerous.
It's pretty interesting. It seems as if he was clearly recruited with the understanding that what has played out would not occur.

Wtf was their list management thought process!

They thought Gawn was a quality forward. He's not.

Who could have been this coming.. definitely on the dees who convinced him, Gawn convinced him it could work by sharing the ruck.

In an interview, Gawn discussed how he was convinced about the merits of Grundy’s recruitment.
Apparently Goodwin in trying to get Gawns approval to recruit Grundy said “ would you rather another AA accolade or premiership medal”

I agree. Interestingly it was just reported on the MMM news update that Grundy has said he’s open to a trade at the end of the year, which is essentially code for he wants out. This is going to be a very interesting watch regardless of what happens.

By the sounds of it he’s not going to want to play second fiddle for two years, and fair enough. He’s got his deficiencies, but at the end of the day he’s a high quality first ruck, and is still extremely capable when working solo, as seen when again went down injured.
Hope he goes to the swans and not port or geelong
All would be genuine threats with him there, but swans are palatable

Interesting if he went to a Stkilda or a North, and decided to become the leader he has always avoided becoming. Thats his true miscalculation, he should have embraced the challenge to lead those around him. Hed grow and become a better player

Which is bizarre, because Max would know better than anyone that a. He is not a quality forward and b. and most importantly, Max would not want to be the forward.
And Grundy is worse as a forward, so the acquisiton was always a strange one.

Melbourne have a history here and once convinced Braydon Preuss to join because he was seen by them as a promising young ruck simply lacking senior opportunity at North Mebourne due to Goldstein. Um, hello.

The decision to move to Melbourne was a staggeringly poor career choice by Preuss given the presence of Gawn but it's that same kind of thinking from Melbourne that has lead to the acquisition of Grundy.

If this latest experiment fails then this one falls squarely at the feet of Melbourne even if Grundy should have known better.

I suspect they've believed it ever since that prelim where he kicked 5.

I assume they thought they were keeping their ruck dominance and getting a gun kpf. It's the only way it made sense. But instead they're only filling ruck for 1.5 million dollars of their cap for it.

Both their ruck and forward line were better without Grundy - he's now just back up.

Melbourne fans on their board think they’d get a better pick for him that we got for him. 🤣😂🤣
Yeah there was one guy on the D&T board yesterday trying to convince people his trade value was low because of injury concerns lmao. Yeah, one of the most durable rucks of the last decade finally gets an injury and all of a sudden that tanks his value, definitely not the salary dump thing 😆

FWIW a poster over at Nick's whose history would suggest he is privy at times to some inside information (intel or gossip you be the judge) is adamant Collingwood made a one off payment of $750,000 to Melbourne (representing 150K x 5 years) this season with nothing more to pay beyond this year.

I challenged him on it as this was a big claim and asked how confident he was in this information.

100% was his answer.

If true and I emphasis if, this would be an interesting development and could make sense for both clubs.

1. This would effectively mean Melbourne were only committed to paying Grundy circa $200,000 this season and for that price the experiment of using him alongside Gawn in an effort to win the flag this year is suddenly more appealing for a club who believes it's Premiership window is open. Failure to win the flag and/or with the experiment they have the option of cutting their losses and paying for Grundy to play elsewhere.

2. If we had the capacity in our salary cap to payout Grundy in a single year to the tune of $750,000 then this could represent a total saving of $500,000 in comparison to the figure of $250,000 x 5 often quoted. Were both options available to us? A figure equating to 150K x 5 makes what we got in trade certainly more palatable.

While I have no idea what the actual truth is I do believe the club under Wright have made the decision to be deliberately vague when it comes to the state of our salary cap, to keep the media and opposition guessing and by extension all of us.

Pretty sure Grundy has said the option of taking a pay cut to stay at Collingwood was never put to him. Feel free to produce otherwise.

Are we expected to take Grundy's word for it? It was reported on Footy Classified that we wanted him to stay but to also take a pay cut. Grundy chose not to. You can't prove what Grundy said is true, just likr FC can't prove that it's not.

He's of weak character if it's true he wants to leave.
