It's f**ing australian rules football, lets be honest here, the irish only come over to get paid because their game is amateur...

More Arguing the fact guys like Sully, Shaun Mannagh, even Checkers spend a long time in the vfl waiting for a chance when they are clearly good enough, and some gaelic footballer can hop on a flight and walk straight into a afl footy club because he's irish? please!
No more, have enough able footballers here. Is that asinine?

Do you feel the same way about Mason Cox?

Remember you are hearing one side of the story here, Tuohy clearly has a vendetta to come out swinging like this in a book that nobody is going to read.

Personally it fills my heart with joy knowing that some insider has written a book that trashes Carlton.

But hey, each to their own.

There's been a lot of ruing the demise of the rookie draft and "real" rookies recently; however the Irish experiment actually has a significantly better success rate than the rookie draft experiment.

You are correct in having to adapt to different people/times, all though you could argue getting singled out in a review session (for example) would make a elite athlete want to improve, not sook.

As Cat B rookies they can be added outside the draft and you don’t need a list spot for them. Players like Checkers can only be added via the draft. Its not that difficult to understand really.

Happy for coxy, but like I said the odds of that happening again are slim to none. I just don't understand the hype around the irish. When tuohy says he is trying to get more over to play, I say stick to your amateurish round ball game please. Thank god collingwood won't be doing it anytime soon after getting burned by our last two. The game won't go global no matter how many times the AFL try (NZ game, China game). Invest those wasted resources in grassroots level footy, the games fabric. Also international rules was a complete shitshow for a stretch until they made AA selection a mandatory selection requirement.

And Jesus wept.

Is there no such thing as a joke anymore?

Afl= anti fun league

Ed is a shpeshal case on this board. Seems to think that anyone who dares to disagree with his views hate and are targeting him, even though it’s very much not the case.
The guy lives rent free here and is still unhappy.

I think we need to give him more attention.

The afl need to fix this system. It’s broken

There's two different aspects to it:

A) System where it can be advantageous to delist and then re-draft players.

Most of those are simply occuring because for some reason rookie list is a separate list and there's a salary cap advantage of maximising the number of players on the rookie list. Just include rookie salaries in the salary cap. To stop the stupidity.

However Brisbane and Richmond are doing it to take extra picks to the draft. Brisbane for extra matching points and Tiges will be planning on trading out at least one of their picks. No idea how to stop that - unless teams aren't able to re-recruit someone they've recently delisted.

B) But the number of kids being taken is a different story. That purely comes down to list sizes. With current list sizes the only way of increasing the number of kids drafted is for teams to either run with a lot less depth, or churn through their youngsters quicker - giving them very little time to develop before moving them on.

Our last two are actually doing alright …

Sarah Rowe has clocked up 64 games for Collingwood and Ash Sheridan is on 47. That’s decent given the girls only play half the number of games in a season. Granted, that’s ina team that isn’t doing so well.

If it works for the women’s, why can’t it work for the men?

Mark Keane is a solid enough contributor at Adelaide that we wanted him back?

And it’s so easy for us to put all the blame on him for him leaving - but if we were impacted (as we were) then we should accept some blame ourselves. How is blaming others for things that don’t work in our favour going to make us be the best in the competition?

OTTOMH …

Tohill only played a game, and in that game he looked the most lost I’ve ever seen anybody on a footy field (and I’ve seen people kick towards the wrong goal). Kudos to him for having the self awareness to figure that going to med school was more his calling.

Caolin Mooney just never fitted into the gameplan. That’s why he was put in the forward line because he couldn’t think much beyond “get ball, ping ball at goals”.

Marty Clarke was a hard toiler. Probably should have been a Premiership player if he hadn’t pulled the pin early. And when he came back he was struck down by Addisons disease - that sucks and had nothing to do with him being Irish.

Any others I’ve missed?

A mere 45 years ago people were saying that the game would never be national, and yet here we are.

There was also a bloke called Kevin Dyas who didn't get close to AFL standard.

The dream was talls, but back flank seems to have been the go when you look at the Irishman across the league. They seem to pick up the skills fine and it's a more transferrable role if you ask me than the more contested roles. It's a complete guess whether they'll be able to read the ball flight and protect the ball drop when it comes to talls - but you can see in other sports if they're good runners with game sense - that transfers.
