Sydney still has a bit of an inferiority complex - if you listen carefully you can still hear the clink of convict chains and irons around Sydney - it will eventually disappear but it takes time - if they accepted their past they'd feel better - also.... they're still a bit jealous of our gold rush - "Marvellous Melbourne" and all that...I think it's there and seen in a greater tendency for Melbournians to make comparisons and talk down Sydney.
To Queenslanders Sydney-siders are Mexicans and Melbournians should therefore be referred to as Cubans - a little further south and a whole lot more left - seems appropriate!
It varies wildly.
There are coffee shops that do serve decent coffee. But unlike Melbourne they don’t need to do so to stay in business.
The best part about living in Sydney? Sydney doesn’t compare itself to anywhere else. The Melbourne - Sydney rivalry only exists in one direction.
Joel Cochran’s first interview was a good case study - he was asked by a journo how he felt moving from Sydney to Melbourne. He was utterly confused by the question - what is he supposed to say? No journo in Sydney would ever think to ask the question the other way around.
Have you seen who they vote for in Queensland?I've never understood the logic. If we're Mexicans, I guess that makes them Americans. Is that really something you'd want to aspire to be?
Does that make them Northern aligned Southern sympathisers?Have you seen who they vote for in Queensland?
They are the Deep South.
What will it become when the population of Melbourne outstrips Sydney ?Nah it's a size thing. Australia doesn't view NZ as a rival, but the Kiwis do. America doesn't view Canada as a rival, but the Canadians do. Same with Melbourne and Adelaide and Melbourne and Sydney. The smaller place sees a rivalry. The bigger place is far too cocky to compare themselves with the little guy.
True. Far North Queenslanders consider anyone south of Rockhampton a 'bloody southerner'!This is scarily accurate, with the one possible exception: you're giving a lot of geography credit to Queenslanders who live outside of SEQ

Size was the wrong measure on my behalf. We'll have to overtake them on the wealth and splendor fronts to be considered rivals. What will it become when the population of Melbourne outstrips Sydney ?

Sydney aren't letting go of their sense of their cities superiority any time soon.
I think it's because Sydney is certain it's superior due to wealth and glamour. In the same way that Australia is certain it's superior to NZ and thus doesn't see a rivalry and is very fond of NZ.Sydney doesn’t really compare itself to any other city. Well, maybe it does with the weather, but hard to argue about that.
I’ve never met anybody in Sydney who doesn’t enjoy visiting Melbourne.
