IMO …

It’s about expectations setting.

When Hinkley/Koch came to Port, they were an utter basket case of a club. There was serious talk of them handing their license back.

Hinkley had a very similar start to what Fly has had and quickly turned it around. Then the expectations set in - they were a proud club there to win Premierships. Which they haven’t done.

Some may see that as a good approach - I think most neutrals would consider that over the Hinkley journey Port Adelaide have generally over-achieved. Nobody tipped them to go from 11th last season to 3rd this season.

But there is more to being a supporter than your team winning games of footy. It’s not much fun being a supporter when you feel empty after a win (because it was expected) and rotten after a loss (because it wasn’t). That’s where Port fans are at, and have been for a while.

As for Collingwood, Fly hasn’t even coached 50 games yet, we were 17th when he took over, and the club have largely refrained from setting any public expectations. Let’s see if we can hold onto that. And of course actually winning Premierships does get some breathing space, as we see with Adam Simpson.
Yeah they have a good young midfield core now but the rest of the list reads as pretty average to me. I thought they were an overachiever this year as well.
I wonder if Hinkley's personality plays a part in it?
8 years from now if fly is still coach and we haven't won a flag I still don't see our supporters having that kind of hatred and contempt for him.

Adam Kingsley didn’t complain about the break he said Collingwood earned .unlike ken Hinkley with being first in July comment

i like how everyone believes that the doctors at all the clubs would never make compromises....

Doctors are human too, and they work for the clubs and want to see the team succeed. If someone is screaming at them not to take a player off for a 20-min assessment because this is their most important 20 mins of their career to date, it’s not hard to understand the doctor faltering at that point if there is any ambiguity.

Yeah, to Fly’s credit he sees that there’s more to being a winner than winning games of footy. I’m sure that’ll hold him in good stead, but let’s see. Us supporters are a weird mob.

The thing that absolutely changes the calculus is winning Premiership(s). Which is unfortunate, because there is a lot of luck involved in that. If in 2012 our players didn’t need to travel to the Prelim final via John McCarthy’s funeral, and lose in an extremely flat finals performance to the eventual Premiers - Nathan Buckley might have been a Premiership coach.

Kingsley is wisely not speaking a problem into existence.

I'm not sure why they hate him so much. Though to be fair they have lost 4 home finals in 7 years.
He's had 11 seasons for only 5 finals wins, hasn't won a final away from home in nearly a decade and is the longest serving coach to never make a grand final. Despite all he is done for the club you can't really knock the fans for wanting a change.

You can always cherry pick statistics to suit a narrative.

For example - “It seems crazy Port fans want to sack a coach who has finished the H&A season either 1st, 2nd or 3rd in three out of the last four seasons”

I think the issue is they have nothing to show for it, not even a grand final appearance, that’s what’s making the natives restless

ken doesnt have a very good list. I'm not sure why. I dont follow them, but I would look at who is making the decisions. Their reliance on trading for talls is even more stark than us. The focus on charlie dixon is recipe for failure

Thanks for interpreting my post....if you want further simplification, how about the guy who pays the bills determines the outcomes...

I think it's pretty straight forward - if the AFL want to ensure blokes get a concussion assessment after a hit at a crucial time in a big game - they've got to be the ones who watch the videos and make the calls - clubs or players aren't going to do it impartially.

Where a team finishes in the 8 means nothing other than whether it gives them an advantage in finals. Nobody is going to celebrate a coach for frequently finishing near the top if they can't win finals. Port were at the crossroads last year as to whether Hinkley or another coach could take them further than being serial underachievers. Could have been Harvey/Lyon, Thomas/Lyon success or a Ratten/Malthouse disaster. Either way I think that they pulled the wrong reign keeping Hinkley. It's seems like another case of the president's tenure being intrinsically tied to the coach.

Why can’t we have 2 biggest losers

I don't get how that's an example?
put simply, you look at having the right system for each situation
I'm saying that while systems help players not to panic, they still need to be people who dont panic. Some of the melb players have had several years of just blasting the ball when they get it in hand...they obviously practised a fast movement 45 degree system last week and used it in the first 15 mins but when the pressure was on, they went back to their usual methods. I'm just saying that a regular practice of a 2min drill is not going to cut the mustard for some player types. .....exhibit A Cozhee who is hyper most of the time and just does the first thing that comes to mind. Petracca usually looks downfield for a second and then blasts it. Oliver always blasts it. Gawn just grabs it out of the ruck and blindly kicks it without thinking and he's 33. A smarter coach might help but the whole team seems to run off individual efforts.

At any rate, I've had enough of this topic so I give in. Plug the players in. Set the operating system. No worries...

All I can say is re-watch that last quarter where we got rolled against the Cats last year before we started really focussing on end game scenarios and what to do when you're trying to hold on to a lead. Then re-watch the last quarter against the Dees. I think we went run down the clock mode way too early against the Dees but the differences in positioning and decisions with the ball were vastly different.
