So the returning the ball is about a delay in play. During the Sydney final the ball was returned to Papley but as siren had gone the umpire said no delay in play so no 50 m penalty.

In the Lions game in the first passage of play, The Carlton player laid a tackle and the umpire called for a ball up, The Carlton player picked up the ball and prior to returning the ball to the umpire, appeared to question the umpire re non free kick and then returned the ball to the umpire.

Why is that not a delay in play and a free kick?
