It was all a bit odd with his talk of these days with the soft cap, no idea what the hell he was on about, but I think he was suggesting that the etiquette was to tell the club before you run an inside info story about selection. So it's the club can tell the player he's dropped, rather than the media
It's up to the club to ensure the ship is watertight. Anything that floats loose is fair game for reporters. Only if the report is incorrect and damaging should reporters face criticism.

Sounded like players are hearing of being dropped from the media rather than from within? Which makes for an interesting conundrum for Morris. Does he contact the club to say he is running with a story, which might compromise his source. Or does he just run the story and avoid a difficult discussion with the footy manager?

Either way, if I am the leaker I would be a little concerned today. Time for Bevo to devise a Barium Meal Test.

No idea what the etiquette is to be honest. Bevo and the journo appear to have different views of it.

Bevo's rant was a ripper though - he'd be good in a game day thread.

The boys on Fox mentioned that this was the second time that Morris had broken doggies selection news and the last time was before the GF. He's clearly upset, but the anger is misplaced. If someone at the club is passing this information on, that's where you should be directing your ire.

Mark Robinson says hi.
Presuming you don't have access to the Australian ;), here is Robbo's hot take on the matter.

Mark Robinson: Luke Beveridge’s press conference meltdown was unhinged but is he OK?

It is the morning after the night before and the Bulldogs and the AFL need to ask Luke Beveridge one very important question: Are you OK?
It is a serious question.
For Beveridge seemed unhinged in his post-match slaughter of Fox Sports reporter Tom Morris on Wednesday night after their loss to Melbourne. So much so that Morris should considering taking legal action against Beveridge.

The Bulldogs coach bullied, intimidated and humiliated Morris for writing two correct articles about the Bulldogs’ team selection.
One in the lead-up to the last year’s grand final. The other this week. Both were correct.

It is the second time Beveridge has launched at Morris.
After the Ryan Gardner story broke in Grand Final week last year — revealing that Gardner would not play — Morris received a phone call from a furious Bulldogs coach at 11pm.
Morris endured a harrowing spray, an incident the Bulldogs chief executive Ameet Bains was told about, yet did nothing about.

A standard line from the Bulldogs is, well, “that’s Bevo”.
Well, he’s in a right mess this time.
Beveridge went for the throat. He questioned Morris’ character by suggesting that Morris was a Melbourne supporter and that his articles were written to undermine the Dogs.
”You’ve been preying on us ... you’ve been opening us up, causing turmoil within our football club,” Beveridge said.
It was unedifying from Beveridge.
He has hurt his brand, his club’s and the AFL’s.
He also is a hypocrite in this instance.
He accused Morris’ articles of creating mental health issues for people at his club, while at the same time bullying and abusing Morris in a public domain.
Abuse, character assassination, mental health?
The AFL last night had urgent post-match talks about what happened.
Senior Bulldogs officials need to also respond quickly

Beveridge will be asked to apologise but a simple “I’m sorry” won’t suffice because after last night’s outburst, you can hardly think Beveridge will believe he did the wrong thing.
The AFL, the club and the AFL Media Association will all be involved today.
AFLMA president Damian Barrett and Beveridge have a deep, personal dislike for each other — they had a physical confrontation at Crown Casino several years back — but that shouldn’t play a role in this latest distasteful encounter.
The extraordinary personal attack also came in the week that the AFL clamped down on players for abusing and swearing and disrespecting umpires.
Journos don’t have a bundle of supporters either, but what kind of competition would the AFL be running if it allowed Beveridge’s behaviour to go unpunished?
The coach clearly dislikes Morris, he might think he’s a double agent and he might even have a beef with all media, but that doesn’t excuse his pathetic behaviour.
Those sort of high-spirited confrontations between coach and journos have happened before, but they are rarely captured by the TV networks.

Certainly, they are never seen at televised post-match press conferences, although there is a famous exchange between Terry Wallace and Geoff Poulter hanging around the internet.
In contrast to Beveridge’s rattle snake venom, Wallace was an angry carpet snake.
For a long time, journos in this game have all had their moments with coaches.
Morris, mind you, had to ask the question of Beveridge before last night’s game.
It was his story about Gardner not playing in the grand final last year and it was story about Hunter not playing this week.
That’s the underwritten rules of footy journalism: If you write the article, and you’re at the game or press conference, you have to ask the question.
No, the story is not about Tom Morris because he did exactly what he is paid to do, which is break stories. The footy world should remember that.
The story is Beveridge.
The irrational outburst is a reflection of where Beveridge is — and his football club — rather than Morris.

It’s why the question needs to be asked: Are you OK?
Is he under stress like he says other football club staff are under stress?
Was the whole Hunter selection fiasco a bid to flush out the club leak — are we sure it came from the club anyway? — and Morris was collateral damage?
Has Beveridge lost some sense of reality?
We ask the question yet again — are you OK? — because his performance smacked of a coach at breaking point. At Round 1?
The AFL last night was left stunned by the outburst and this morning will be asking if Beveridge has brought the game into disrepute.
The answer is yes.
Beveridge needs a please explain from the AFL at the very least. A fine surely will come.
Morris is said to be calm about what happened last night, although at 9am, the Bulldogs had not reached out to him.
That’s pathetic in itself.

Bevo's bizarreness suggests it must be standard for journos to let the club know that they're about to run a story like this, so they have a set timeframe to inform the player. Ludicrous public outburst though.

Trying to link it to the soft cap was just ridiculous as well. The soft cap is a pretty straight forward equalisation measure. If clubs put too much pressure on too few, it's simply that they're over-paying the too few - cut salaries and employ more people - it's not like we're talking about small salaries.

On a slightly different subject, Treloar's body language while playing for the Dogs continues to mystify me. His reaction after kicking goals or to the game in general seems to be missing the passion and emotion he showed at Collingwood.

Treloar would be really, really struggling if he were still with us. Looks so slow and rusty and even with 2 goals on the board tonight I thought he had next to no impact whatsoever. With so many talented midfielders around him, I don't think he could have it any easier when trying to impact the game but to me, every 10 games he plays is less impressive than the previous 10. He's clearly past his best
He looks unhappy.

Just occurred to me that David King would, if we were to shave his head, bear a strong resemblance to one V. Putin.

As if we really need another reason to dislike Putin.
