Would you respect a coach who hasn't played at the highest level?

I respect an intelligent, motivational, tactically aware leader who can cope with the press, board and fan expectation.

man or woman or neuter who has all the above please

bit of luck would be nice too

I'm leaning towards Bolton purely because of the success of the Hawthorn model.

His teaching background also would be desirable given the status of our list and that we will be rebuilding and bringing more and more kids in through the door.

Same here although it will take us time to get use to his presser :D

Would you respect a thuggish back pocket or bog average mid?
Answer a question with a question. I like it. I don't care if Bolton or anyone else is coach as long as they play the young ones and get rid of the dead wood. The next 2 to 3 years we are going to be at the bottom who ever is coach. Get them fit, build their bodies up and teach them the skills and game plans.

Great post.

Me too.

There is no doubt in my mind the Clarkson game plan is superior to the Lyon game plan, but the former requires better players than the latter. By that I mean every player in the team has to be able to hit targets; Lyon manages to turn average players into good role players but that's not enough.

The problem with the Hawks plan is if you try it when your team is not good enough you get killed as missed targets create turnovers and easy goals for the opposition. So poor teams go the Lyon-Roos route to minimise scoring opportunities of the opposition, and create a dog ugly, tedious spectacle as a result.

Bring in Bolton so that he can school our kids in the superior plan while SOS builds the list with players who are capable of carrying it out.

Every one of Clarkson's former assistants at Hawthorn that has a full time coaching role has their team in the top eight at the moment. West Coast are flying under Simpson, GWS and the Bulldogs have built their lists well but are coming along just fine under Cameron and Beveridge. Richmond have taken a while to mature but Hardwick now has a team with a lot of solid citizens sitting 5th on the ladder. They're obviously ahead of the pack as far as modern day footy goes and it'd be great to have a long running Clarkson assistant coaching us if he's deemed the right man for the job.

I reckon Lloyd would be an attractive candidate because of his experience at three of the better run clubs in the comp and the two Vic power clubs.

I believe part of our clubs problem is we don't know how to build a quality football department with grown ups in charge.

I don't think Lloyd would be as tactical as Bolton in a football sense, but probably a better coaching manager.

Very astute observation Sin.

With that in mind, you'd have to think Ratts would be worth another look by someone, especially if they threepeat in his first three years there.

We'll probably be the exception though :(

Think tonight is a great test for Barker. If the players are really behind them then they need to show it tonight, not by winning but by showing the same effort and intensity displayed in the Port game. Otherwise what has he really changed.

So Ratts then ?

Why isn't Simon Lloyd an option in the poll?

Isn't he the bookies fave?

Wasn't on the radar at the time. Perhaps one of the mods can add him, but will need to be under 'none of the above' as existing votes stay against their allocated values (posters can manually change their own vote). That said, bookies only frame markets according to where punters are parting with their heard earned.

okey doke.

It is clear that we must go outside the club for our next coach.

If Murphy won't play for the next coach let him go.
