Pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao, unable to get even a response from Floyd Mayweather Jr. gauging his interest in a fight, instead will defend his welterweight belt against former champion Shane Mosley on May 7 in a pay-per-view fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Well, it's not what we all wanted, but that's not really Manny's fault given that Floyd won't even come to the table at the moment.

On this fight itself, there really isn't anyone else for Pacquiao to fight. I mean, he has already defeated Marquez, Berto hasn't done enough to warrant such a fight and Alexander/Bradley aren't really in Manny's league. Mosley, to be honest, probably won't be able to compete with Pacquiao either, but he almost knocked Floyd out, and he will certainly generate more money than the other contenders for the bout, so in that sense, he seems to be the logical choice.

On a side note, now that Pacquiao has arranged a fight with someone else, Mayweather might just crawl out of the woodwork to abuse him like he did last time.

Re: Pacquiao v. Mosley

Could be an entertaining fight. But I agree Mosley is probably not going to pose much a threat to Manny.

This is the main problem...nowadays it's hard to get really excited about a Pacquiao fight against anyone other than Mayweather.

As a Pacquiao fan, I'm a bit over these blatant money-making matchups. Bob Arum in particular thinks of nothing other than revenue, so this bit from an ESPN article comes as no surprise:
He [Mosley] and Arum also said Top Rank has a promotional option on Mosley's next fight, win or lose against Pacquiao.

Re: Pacquiao v. Mosley

The sooner people realize that this fight will never happen the better........So that everyone can just move on.....
Floyd wants no part of Manny......Floyd only wants to protect his hand picked, cherry picked record....

The strange thing is that Floyd could beat Manny with his shoulder roll defence and counter punching ability......

I'd love for this fight to happen and to see Manny KO Floyd.

But for us boxing fans it will never be.....

This fight doesn't appeal to me very much. Sugar Shane is one of my favourite fighters over the last decade but the Mayweather and Mora fights have shown that he is way past his prime. It's quite obvious that the Mayweather vs Pacquiao fight is never going to happen. Would have loved to have seen the Pac man fight a young hungry fighter in Berto. Really think Berto deserves the big name fight and hope he gets one soon.

Mayweather should take a fight against someone like Cotto in the first 6 months of this year, and then pacquiao vs mayweather can happen come December 21, Las Vegas, Nevada.

One can dream :(

Seriously, this would be the biggest fight of all time. OF ALL TIME!

It just hurts me as a boxing fan to think that this fight probably won't happen.

Anyway, I wouldn't write Mosley off as quickly as some boxing fans seem to be doing. He rocked Mayweather with some deadly power, and Mayweather has a greater defence than Pacquiao. Mayweather and Pacquiao both seem to have pretty good chins though, but still, Mosley packs a punch. I actually like the way Mosley fights as well.

I also agree with numb nutz in that it seems as though Mayweather is scared of the greatest boxer on earth, but head to head, I wouldn't be surprised if Mayweather came away with the win (decision after the 12th?) given their strengths and weaknesses. Devastated? Yes, but surprised? Not really.

I'd rather see a Marquez III

What weight would they fight at though?

All off the top of my head:

I think the last time they fought was at 130, and Manny is now very comfortable at 144-147 and has been for the last 2-3 years. It'd be a joke for Manny to go anywhere near the low 130's, and I don't think he'd be wanting to go to say 137-138.

Also, I think Marquez has only fought at 140 once in his career, and that was against Mayweather last year. In hindsight, Marquez had no chance in that fight. Can't see Marquez wanting to even venture near 140+ again.

I think it's fair to say that Arum has picked Mosley largely because Pacquiao should win, ditto Mayweather with Marquez and Mosley, because let's be honest, you'd want a Pacquiao-Mayweather fight to occur with both fighters coming in on their long winning streaks...

Fair article though.
