Opinion Paddy Dow, can you see a pathway for him to break into our best 22 or are we resigned to losing him?

What are Dow's chances of breaking into the best 22?

Do we lack that at present???

Kennedy, Cerra and Cripps have all exited a centre bounce at pace this year. It's part of why we're flying; we're not just getting clearances but good clearances.

I like Dow. I want Dow to succeed and I think he will get his shot at some point this year, given that it's round 3 and people are mentally trading him already. But I don't think we need to manufacture something that is only there if you squint and cross your eyes to try to shoehorn him in.

We've pace around the edges of a stoppage - Doc, Williams, LOB, Saad, Fisher, Durdin - where we need it, and the three main midfielders are exiting a stoppage plenty quickly at present.
Those you've noted are hardly explosive, Dow provides a point of difference in a similar manner to LOB that will see him given chances to make it.

If we get enough wins in the 1st half of the year yiu could bring in Dow for a 5 week stint and spell all our midfielders for a week each.

If injuries occur at any stage he will get in earlier.

He can potentially play 5-10 games. If he plays well you try and keep him on the list or trade him for decent value.

Goodness gracious me - how can Carlton win a game without Dow's legendary 'explosive' running power!!! Give it a rest. Anyone can run through a gap into a 6/6/6 field from center bounce- even Kennedy has demonstrated that sort of 'explosive' running power and kicked a goal...

Feel like he will be a quality AFL players, for someone else. Too good to not be playing but, can’t see a spot in Navy Blue, injuries not withstanding. Someone will come looking in the off season if he doesn’t get a crack.

Dow has rare agility around the contest. I couldn’t imagine a worse comparison than Kennedy. Kennedy has been terrific but explosive, maybe not.

If things stay the same he is gunning for Kennedy’s spot as the mid with lowest TOG. Can’t see him overtaking Bam Bam.

His running capacity and production over four quarters is an issue, as is the lack of a true second position.

Sadly I think he’ll be a good mid elsewhere.
I think honestly, he is actually gunning for Cerra's spot in the side. If he improves on his goal kicking ability and can develop some high half forward flanker skills, I can see him coming into the side for Fisher and rotating into Cerra's position in the middle when Cerra has a rest.

That's why scouting isn't easy. You have to extrapolate from what they have shown...

Speed is a weapon. If Dow can get the ball 25-30 times a game he's shown his hands are as good/better. His clearance work is on par if not better and his burst is better. He just needs consistency and defensive effort. I can live without the aerial presence. Although I've seen Dow take some really good overhead marks.
The other thing about him is that his right foot can be every bit as lethal as LOB's left. And I've always said that getting the ball into Dow's hands in the middle for him to distribute, and we're away.

Can’t wait to see Dow in this new structure we have.

Think the MC have it right. His traits in 2021 included a very low tackle count. Half that of Kennedy. Struggled to use his speed to effect tackles. Not great. Kicking efficiency last year terrible. Handballs good.

Want to see him in 2022 with strong players around him. But def understand why he is behind the 5. Can’t play a second spot For mine. If playing forward, would need to up his pressure and specifically his tackling a lot. Don’t even think he has strong IQ either. Running to the arc from CBA or wing, doesn’t hit a target much As his kicking might have improved but it is still worse than Cripps who is behind the other mids on inside 50 quality.

He needs to improve ALOT. Maybe he has. But he has to wait.

The thing I do like is that he has upped his possession count in the VFL. Previously hitting 20-24 posies. Now hitting 30 plus. So he has improved one area of his game so who is to say he can’t improve tackling and his kicking a bit more.

Hopefully he gets a gig to give me of our mids a rest Soon.

Note. Our improvement has come from a few areas but one of them is tackling in transition. It’s no surprise getting rid of Murphy, Gibbons and moving Dow to the 2s see us much more competitive. Those guys just never touched the opposition.

Strongly disagree. Dow fixed up his disposal a bit towards the back end of last year but he isn't technically sound or as fluid as LOB at kicking. He's very upright when he kicks and stiff. He's not as poor as he was but I definitely wouldn't classify it near lethal.

Not Best 22 (and we may lose him) …..

…….. doesn’t mean he won’t get a game (a team needs depth, 28-30 guys should play this year)

I hope when it’s time for him to play his role, he does for the team and his sake…..

…… but his role is inside midfielder, not wing or half forward, he plays when that role is free due to current incumbents form or injury, he doesn’t play the other roles, cause history says he doesn’t play them well and it’s to the team and his detriment.

why is this thread so cluttered with paddy dow talk?

Good teams have potential match winners percolating in the 2's and rotate them in when the run towards finals starts. The ability to freshen up key players in the run home can make all the difference
There will be the inevitable drop off in form in the second half of the season of one or more mids. That will be when Dow is given his chance, unless injuries intervene.

In the meantime, having an AFL ready mid,to give Mirkov someone to tap to, will hasten his development as well. Paddy along with Carrol, Philip, Ed, DC, etc is not a bad midfield for him to develop with.

I still don't know what it is about Dow that dictates that he can't play wing. At any rate, I'm quite looking forward to the fact that we might have at least some trade currency beyond the trading of our draft picks, if it turns out like that.

You have a point. Until this season most would have said the same about Setterfield.
