What are Dow's chances of breaking into the best 22?

Dow has rare agility around the contest. I couldn’t imagine a worse comparison than Kennedy. Kennedy has been terrific but explosive, maybe not.

Every player has positive attributes - that is why they make it onto a list in the first place. Dow will get his chance to show what he's got soon enough - between injuries and Covid that is almost guaranteed - if he was capable of playing at least rotation roles in other spots on the ground he probably would be already playing.

As for referencing Kennedy - read my post - my point was that (even) Kennedy ( who is apparently a total running plodder according to expert analysts on here) is 'fast' enough to kick a running goal from a center bounce clearance in AFL - he has done it this year.

How many posters labelled Kennedy a 'total plodder'? A discussion about leg speed in the side inevitably turns into some sort of perceived witch hunt. Cripps will no doubt be transformed into a fast footballer with this sort of precious defence.

Kennedy posted the 4th highest average speed in the game last week champ - put that in your 'discussion about leg speed pipe and smoke it.

A big fan of Paddy, but I reckon a building team like Gold Coast might entertain the idea of adding some extra class to their midfield, could be a three way type trade with SOS's old mates from Adelaide for Lukosius, who is beginning to look uninterested on the Coast. I like the idea of Paddy (4 year contract in tow) our first round pick for Adelaide's first rounder to us.

Literally no one. I don't even think jimmae has. Hyperbole to the max. Most of us love Kennedy and love what he's showing.

Yo-yo-ing Dow hasn't worked thus far. If he is capable of playing now he'd be playing logic I think it's irrelevant, completely. He's being rebuilt. That's as obvious as all ****. The number one thing when doing that for a player is consistency. Let them build consistency with a really solid block. Consistently dominate. Raise confidence. Then unleash him.

He will be held back and fools will point to that as proof that he's not gonna make it. Impatiently jumping the gun. He's got another 2 or 3 weeks of vfl minimum imo. Consistency.

No he didn't.

You need to take a puff of said pipe and settle down.
You are absolutely right, I was wrong after I looked up teh post in teh relevant thread where it was posted - he actually posted the third-best average speed in defense I don't have the app so I can't comment on his attack average leg speed - perhaps you could have pointed out how I was wrong.

feel free to delete my pipe comment.

Also helps when the reserves are decent...and he is a catalyst to when they pull away from sides the first two weeks as he works into a game.

Preach. Said it all last year and moat of the year before, leave him in the VFL til he's dominating that level, and not just for a couple of games. Get him to a point where it's almost unfair for opposition sides to be coming up against him, then put him on-ball in the seniors and tell him to do more of the same.

Worst thing for him would be for him to put together a couple of good VFL games, then get shoehorned into the seniors as a reward, only to play some underwhelming footy as a half forward/midfield rotation and get dropped two weeks later. Bit of strut and swagger for the young lad would do wonders for his game.

I think Dow will surprise many when he gets his chance.

This year, we have midfield depth so Dow won’t be relied upon to be the key mid - he’ll slot in and do his part.
Look at how much better someone like Fisher is looking in our team

Bring it on!

Dow has a number of hurdles to overcome:
  • Lack of flexibility. Doesn't have a 2nd position when things don't click. In fact he's so inflexible you can't even re-assign him a new role in the midfield such as a tagger or blocker. If he's having a bad day you're effectively playing a man down for the entire match.
  • Two-way running is non-existent and lacks a defensive side to his game.
  • Decision-making is very suspect at AFL level.
  • One percenters such as blocking, bumping, tackling, taking an opponent's run, shepherding, creating space, etc are more often than not non-existent in Dow's game.
  • Skill execution by hand and foot at AFL level has been well below par as a general rule.
  • Lack of consistency.
The good news for Dow is that development is definitely a much higher priority under the current coaching regime than it ever was under the previous one. In that regard I'm sure Dow his been given sage advice on which parts of his game need work and how Power and O'Keefe can best assist with developing those areas. You only have to look at the rapid rate of improvement in Setterfield's, Owies, O'Brien's and Durdin's games as proof. Heck, even Cripps and Kennedy have added layers to their game over the summer.

The bad news for Dow is that should a spot become available in the next few weeks he'll be competing against the likes of Stocker, Carroll, Motlop, Fogarty, Honey, Philp, Kemp, etc all of whom are developing just as quickly and provide greater flexibility.

If there's one player I'd love to get a full preseason into under this coaching group before we let him go it'd be Cunners. I'm not saying he'd be any better or worse, but I'd just like to see what they can do with him.

The Suns midfield were way too quick for us. Our big 5 midfielders are not quick. Perhaps we sacrifice some of that brutality for Dow's burst, instead of having Fisher and Martin floating through during general play for the sake of pace, while being effective for about 10% of their game time.

He'll come in for Cripps. He was always going to get games due to injuries at some point. Now its up to him to keep his spot. He doesnt have to be best on ground he just needs to play his role. Get the ball, give it and then if a teammate gets the ball, receive the hands, use his speed and kick it better than he has in the past. Most important, run both ways and chase.

seems not what most of us were anticipating.

likely that setters replaces cripps in the middle. we'll see.
