I guess the comfort they can take is that their best achievements as a cricket nation have come under major pressure as a test side: some big chases against Australia, series deciders against them, some big series wins against England when they were relatively strong etc.

They’re gonna have some real selection issues if they have all their bowlers fit. Not so much batting headaches from a selection perspective. I’d like to see them back themselves in a bit and just go for an all out assault if they had Burger and Nortje fit but I don’t think they would do that

You’d maybe say if it was keeping low more often that he could have been on the front foot but it had only been every 4-5 overs a ball was going through a bit lower so hard to blame him.

On form in the last few years? Probably not. Maybe a root or Williamson just on sheer class but on their proven ability with their side losing wickets and under the pump he’s just built for it

They’re obviously a vastly different side now, just saying that maybe the ‘monkey on the back’ that is clearly there with the coloured clothes might not be as omnipresent in a test tournament because they have actually been world number one, had the mace, proven themselves under pressure in past generations etc

They still haven't held the mace as the world test champions even though they have been one of the best test teams in the world.

Little old New Zealand won the first one, despite not being one of the best test teams, we still beat India in a tense final to win it.
