Side note: I know it made a lot of people, and still does, uncomfortable. The quota system.

It is VERY noticeable how many coloured fans are in the crowd. I don’t think there would be anywhere near that sort of representation in the crowd even 15 years ago. Maybe for all the trouble it has caused and yes, it has meant many players at various times have had undeserving situations foisted upon them in both ways - playing when they hadn’t earned it and missing out when they didn’t deserve it, it has actually had a positive impact?

Jansen is an Iceman, he will get SA home if their other tailenders can stick with him, he is a clutch player.

A Ponting like prediction from yours truly, I doubt I will get any credit for it.

what a test. wonder how much rabada's t20/ipl training schedules have forced him to learn to bat like that.

he stole the momentum very quickly. he was a bunny not that many years ago.

He’s long had that shotplaying ability to be fair to him. He’s very very rarely been able to harness it for more than a few overs at a time, though. Even today he only faced 26 balls or something but I can remember watching him make a couple of 20s or so before he first came to Australia then he made about 15?? in the WACA test where he bowled SA to victory and just recall him playing some really crisp drives and one of the commentators talked about how he loved batting and his goal was to become an allrounder….

Didn’t exactly pan out that way but he’s always had that sort of ‘looks like he could turn into something but it’s not happened yet’ thing going.

lol at Bavuma’s reaction being told he didn’t knick the ball.
Bavuma is so much more understated than Graeme Smith who is arguably SA's best ever captain. Temba almost seems apologetic for being a leader wheras Smith was larger than life. Was amused at the anecdote of his sooking in the toilets and not even watching the epic partnership.

The many ways to skin a rabbit.

Smith was perfect for that team. All potential world beaters and scary cricketers in their own way but needed a leader to kick the door down for them so they could charge on in.

These guys don’t have that nucleus of talent and are a bit of a patchwork - their attack certainly can be a bit scary but the rest of the side is basically guys trying to work out if they can cut it at test level. A subtle guy like him who has had to fight all his career for respect and to earn some recognition that he actually deserves his spot, who isn’t going to beat down on guys who are going through a bit of a struggle (not that Smith would have but I suspect he would have just ushered in a new guy in their place quickly) is probably a good thing.

the responsibility he carried today. You could see it in his interview. Relief and frustration that he exposed the lower order even after winning. He almost seems disappointed that it came down to that.

It shows in his performances with the bat, he’s really carried them on the batting side for years now. Similar to Cummins at times. I’m a big fan.

Today we've seen again that the tension in tests will never be matched by the hit and giggle format.
Made all the better by the WTC implications too! I don't care what other people think of the format, I love that two years of test cricket can be decided in such a crazy match like this.

... And today might have a similar outcome at the MCG. All results on the table.

Just reading that in addition to Bavuma being in the shitter for most of the last partnership between Rabada and Jansen, during the lunch break at 8-down, Rabada and Jansen themselves were out the back smoking darts with Shukri Conrad the coach; apparently they both smoke 😂😂

Two of the most perfectly built fast bowlers on the planet choofing down durries. Doesn’t get much better
