Summer Paris 2024 - General Discussion

France 24 English has been doing stories in the lead up to Paris. Will put some of their videos on non specific sports stories in here.

The River Seine will be used for Open water swimming and triathlon so thought the general discussion thread was the right place for this video.

From video notes

In this week's edition of Destination Paris, there's good news for organisers as new data shows that pollution levels in the Seine have improved. We take a look at several stars to look out for in Paris including pole vaulter Armand Duplantis who is tipped to defend his Olympic gold and Croatian brothers Martin and Valent Sinkovic who are aiming for a fourth medal in rowing. We also bring you the final episode following Indian wrestler Anshu Malik as she clinches her ticket to Paris.

Around 1.30 mark IOC President Thomas Bach says optomistic about The Seine, but problem has been the raecent rain increasing pollution levels. Then says Triathlon rules say if can't swim, it becomes a Duathlon event.

ABC will be allowed to cover the Games and broadcast to outside the big capital cities Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth. These 4 cities Fairfax Radio owns key commercial stations. See below.

The Australian Olympic Committee has welcomed today’s announcement that Nine has confirmed a sub-licensing agreement that allows the ABC Local Radio network to broadcast the 2024 Paris Olympic Games to listeners in Adelaide, Darwin, Hobart and Canberra as well as local ABC radio stations across regional, rural and remote Australia.

Nine's announcement

Nine has today confirmed a sub-licensing agreement that will allow the ABC Local Radio network to broadcast the 2024 Paris Olympic Games to listeners on 891 ABC Adelaide, 105.7 ABC Darwin, 936 ABC Hobart, 666 ABC Canberra and DAB+ channels in those markets, as well as local ABC radio stations across regional, rural and remote Australia.

As Australia’s Home of the Olympics and Paralympics, Nine will deliver unparalleled coverage of the 2024 Summer Games across its television, audio, and publishing platforms, including exclusive commentary and coverage of every moment of action on its talk radio stations and streaming platforms Sydney’s 2GB, Melbourne’s 3AW, Brisbane’s 4BC and Perth’s 6PR.

The deal between Nine and the ABC will extend the radio coverage (AM/FM and DAB+) of the Olympic Games to ensure every Australian can access live broadcasts of our most loved athletes competing on the world stage, and help unite the country around these spectacular sporting moments.

ABC announcement

Australian Olympic officials have welcomed news that ABC Local Radio will broadcast the Paris Olympics, ensuring every Australian will be able to stay up to date with the achievements of our athletes at the Games.

Under a sub-licensing agreement struck between the ABC and rights holder Nine, the national broadcaster will broadcast the Games across its regional radio network, as well as ABC Adelaide, ABC Darwin, ABC Hobart and ABC Canberra.

The deal will see the ABC's expert commentary bringing the excitement of the Games to listeners across the nation.

The coverage will include every Australian gold medal chance, the opening and closing ceremonies, highlights programs, updates of key events and general replay coverage.

Nine will also provide ABC Local Radio with access to exclusive live television and radio commentary and interviews, as well as the feeds provided by the International Olympic Committee.

I think this means only a handful of ABC commentators will be in Paris unlike their extensive teams they sent in the 80's, 90's, and 00's. Every Olympics post Beijing in 2008, the ABC coverage has reduced their coverage sending less specialist commentators and having more general commentators sitting in front of screens in the International Broadcasting Centre rather than at the stadiums and venues calling the action.

This Swimswam article has a break down and list of the athletes going to Paris by sport

Over 10,500 athletes will be in attendance at the 2024 Paris Olympics that begin on July 26th and run through August 11th. See below for the number of quota spots allowed per sport as track and field and swimming lead the way.

Track and field/athletics has the largest amount of quota spots with 1810 total. Swimming has the 2nd largest with 852, although this number is down from the previous quota of 878 that were allowed in Tokyo. World Aquatics has already sent out a message saying that athletes with the ‘B’ cuts may not qualify due to the quota.

Track and field notably has a total of 48 events while swimming has 35 events. Both have men’s events, women’s events, and mixed events.
[83 events of 329 events = 25.2% ]

Track and field and swimming lead the way and are followed by soccer/football (504 athletes from 28 teams) and rowing (502 athletes).

Team sports where they hand out 12 golds or 18 golds to winning teams, is why I'd like to see an adjusted medals table by number of medals handed out, not by events won or finished 2nd or 3rd.

For example in the 18 team sports event in Tokyo;
USA won 5G 2S 1B but there were 53G 39S 22B handed out to 114 individuals in USA teams
France won 3G 2S 1B but there were 44G 24S 12B handed out to 80 individual in the French teams
Oz won 1S in men's hockey and 1B in men's basketball so 18S and 12B = 30 individuals came home with medals.

This could be fun, especially if she gets sick straight away or goes missing to and no one knows how her health is.

Parisian mayor Anne Hidalgo has again committed to swim in the Seine ahead of the Olympic Games to demonstrate that it is safe for competition at the Olympic Games. Her comments on French radio on Wednesday come amid improving water quality conditions and finally acknowledging that there is a Plan B for open water swimming events (but not the triathlon) if the Seine is unsafe for swimming on race day.

Hidalgo, along with recently re-elected French President Emmanuel Macron, have been talking about swimming in the Seine for months after a 1.4 billion Euro (1.5 billion USD) clean-up plan. Heavy rains and limited sunshine have contributed to high levels of harmful bacteria in the river, which is the outlet for Paris’ combined sewer system, but last week showed levels in the acceptable range for the first time.

Put the full story in Track and Field thread but in post #4 above that 9 gave ABC radio some rights, and they will be allowed to cover the Games and broadcast to outside the big capital cities Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth. These 4 cities Fairfax Radio owns key commercial stations.

Today ABC announced Bruce McAvey will call the athletics. If you live in one of the big 4 cities you will have to tune in to an ABC country station to hear Bruce's call of the athletics..

ABC radio 594 Sheparton used to broadcast Radio Australia to the world so at night time I have picked that up in SA, Sydney and country NSW and SE Qld and its pretty clear

Legendary Australian commentator Bruce McAvaney OAM will headline the ABC's radio coverage of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games later this month. McAvaney was a mainstay broadcaster on the Seven Network for decades, calling the AFL and headlining Seven's Olympics coverage.

Under a sub-licensing agreement struck between the ABC and rights holder Nine, the national broadcaster will broadcast the Games across its regional radio network, as well as ABC Adelaide, ABC Darwin, ABC Hobart and ABC Canberra.

McAvaney was at risk of missing out on calling the Games in Paris after he wasn't included in the Channel Nine broadcast team. However, after hearing about the ABC's planned coverage, he said his wife had contacts in the industry to get him involved.

"My wife said to me, 'Macca, did you know the ABC is going to be involved in the Olympics Games?'," he told ABC Radio Adelaide. "I said 'do you know anyone there Annie?' "She made a phone call and … it sort of all happened so quickly."

McAvaney said it would be a privilege to step back into the commentary booth in Paris. "I did feel a little disconnection, you know, a sadness in a way that these opportunities I've had over the years were not going to continue," he said.

Bruce on ABC radio will be better than putting up with James Bracey and Eddie on 9.
Whateley is calling the Aths for ch9. Bruce will do some other stuff for ABC radio but Im not sure exactly what.

Looks like Bruce wont be going to Paris, but like the Covid hit Tokyo Games, will be in a studio somewhere in Oz calling the athletics and doing some other stuff for the ABC. I suspect just like 7 had Jason Richardson track side in Tokyo to interview athletes and bring some of the news and other stuff from the stadium, the ABC is sending one of its sports reporters to be at the stadium in Paris and talk to Bruce and Melinda Gainsford-Taylor.

Roy and HG will do an hour segment at 11am - which is a couple hours after the last event in Paris everyday and that will replace The Conversation Hour on ABC local radio and is repeated at 2pm on Radio National.

Just a reminder if you are in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane or Perth, you wont get the coverage of the live calling of events on your local ABC station, you will have to tune in to a regional station to listen in. But all their none live stuff like Roy and HG and interviews etc will be on ABC Radio.

Bruce was on ABC Radio Adelaide show on Monday morning and the announcement was made. You can listen between 2.11.10 and 2.22.00 in link below. At around 2.17.00 Sonya Feldhoff and Jules Schiller announce they are going to Paris and given they are team from the biggest capital city the ABC are allowed to broadcast live events from, they are doing a combo of stuff to be played on all of the ABC's 55 stations around Oz, as well as their Adelaide breakfast show, which no doubt will have someone co-hosting the Adelaide show in Adelaide studios.

Just days after revealing a partnership with Nine for Paris Olympics coverage, ABC Radio has revealed Bruce McAvaney will be a member of its commentary team.

The recently announced ABC deal with Nine means live coverage of Olympic events can be broadcast to metro areas of Adelaide, Hobart, Canberra, Darwin and the Gold Coast. Also regional markets around Australia. The stations and markets involved are 891 ABC Adelaide, 105.7 ABC Darwin, 936 ABC Hobart, 666 ABC Canberra and DAB+ channels in those markets, as well as local ABC radio stations across regional, rural and remote Australia. Commercial terms relating to the sub-licensing deal have not been revealed. The deal came sometime after there was speculation earlier this year that Nine had decided not to partner with ABC Radio.

The ABC deal to secure McAvaney comes just 11 days before the start of the 2024 Summer Olympics. It sees McAvaney continue his relationship with the world’s biggest sporting event for a 40th year after first being involved working for Network 10 on Los Angeles in 1984.

The ABC has also revealed key members of its Paris 2024 commentary team working alongside McAvaney. ABC broadcasters Quentin Hull, Corbin Midlemas, Clint Wheeldon, Ben Cameron, Ned Hall, Declan Byrne, Lauren Bordin and Robin Chipperfield will be heard by ABC Radio listeners in some markets.

Former Olympians providing analysis for ABC Radio are Melinda Gainsford-Taylor (athletics), Sarah Ryan (swimming), Simon Orchard (hockey), and Brad McGee (cycling). Also joining the coverage are former Davis Cup player John Alexander and Matilda Amy Harrison.

Building the ABC team and guiding the Paris 2024 coverage are ABC head of capital city radio network and sport Mike Fitzpatrick and content director of ABC Sport Tim Verrall.

Head of ABC audio content Ben Latimer told Mediaweek the coverage will see the ABC commentators working from the dedicated Nine Radio Olympic Games studio in Sydney. The live coverage can be heard from 6.30pm AET until the final event each day of the Games.

Bruce McAvaney: ‘Excited’

Speaking about his involvement this year, McAvaney said: “I’ve always thought the Olympics was the ultimate event for an Australian broadcaster. To be given this opportunity by the ABC means a great deal to me.

“These Games will be as exciting as any. We have a 75-strong athletics team – our biggest ever we have sent overseas. I’m very optimistic they’re ready to achieve great things.”

Bruce not in Paris, but Sonya and Jules will be

Latimer also revealed ABC Radio will send Adelaide breakfast show hosts Sonya Feldhoff and Jules Schiller to Paris. They will be broadcasting Adelaide’s most-listened-to AM breakfast show (the biggest AM cume in GfK Survey 4, 2024) back to Adelaide from Paris for the duration of the Games. Sonya and Jules revealed the news to their growing Adelaide audience this morning toward the end of their program.

The head of ABC audio noted the details came after a good week for ABC Radio. Latimer said: “Last week’s results once again demonstrate the power of ABC Radio, with more than seven million listeners tuning in every week. We’re delighted to see ABC’s Local Radio Network increase its audience share in all metro markets, with Adelaide and Brisbane the two standouts. We anticipate a further boost for Adelaide in the coming months with live coverage of the Paris Olympics.

Roy & HG say ‘Cheese’

While listeners in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth will miss out on McAvaney and his new colleagues on ABC Radio, there is Olympic spirit coming their way.

The ABC also announced today the return of Roy & HG to the Olympic stage.

The duo will be on air daily Monday to Friday across the Olympic fortnight with a Paris 2024 show – Roy & HG: People, Medals and Cheese. The hour-long program can be heard daily at 11am across ABC Radio, then at 2pm on RN and as a podcast on ABC Listen

I sometimes tune in to the radio because Basil and co are insufferable on TV.
Really odd they have it on mainstream radio in Adelaide and Hobart but not the bigger cities.

I wonder how long it'll take me to get sick of Bruce's rhetorical questions

Its all about $$$$$.

9 have to recover their rights costs as they bought all the rights for Oz, TV, radio and digital.

So their 4 radio stations in the 4 biggest cities, ie 2GB, 3AW, 4BC, 6PR will maximise their advertising $$ if there is no competition from the ABC radio.

To keep the AOC and IOC happy, it makes sense for them to on sell rights into markets they can't broadcast in.

Former ABC athletics and NRL commentator David Morrow has passed away.

He worked on several Olympics athletics calls and was the main caller after Tim Lane left the ABC in 2002 to go to Channel 10 when they won the AFL rights about 15 months before the season started.

Covered other sports at the 8 Olympics and 6 Comm Games he went to. He worked with 10 time Oz Decathlon champion on several of those games. Left the ABC to call more NRL on 2GB in 2014.

Like a lot of athletics callers on both Oz TV and radio, he got his start in radio calling the local horse races, in country NSW.

France's sporting face of the Games, sponsored by France's biggest company group (as measured by market cap).

Léon Marchand won the 2023 world champs 200m Butterfly, 200 IM and 400 IM, broke Phelps long standing 2008 WR in the 400m IM, and is coached by Phelps' old coach Bill Bowman.

In Paris he will swim those 3 races, plus the 200m Breaststroke and is entered in the 4x200m Free relay to swim Breaststroke and in the 4x100m Medley relay but will probably just swim the heats.

Reason you see 2 golds and a silver is because at 2022 world champs he won 200m IM, 400m IM and silver in the 200m Butterfly.

If he wins 2 or 3 golds not only will he be a god in France, like Thorpe was in 2000, but with 7 or 8 individual titles at Olympics + world champs, that elevates him from equal 16th to either equal 9th or equal 11th on the current list of combined titles.

Anyone know if there are Aussie-specific magazines with full schedules, TV guide, profiles etc? They used to sell those for previous Olympics - keen to get my hands on one.

I know papers are a dying industry but they usually do a 10 to 16 page type lift out and have schelues and times of the big finals along with previews. Maybe watch out for that.
