Coaching Staff Past Coach: Matthew Knights - Finally gets his second shot - 5/5

All I can do is judge him by his record on paper - I saw him play but he never impressed that much. Look at his playing record, his coaching record, his interviews (on BomberTV). He's a loser. He's been losing his whole career. As a player his record is 118 wins, 161 losses. He played for a team which routinely underachieved. He's got 2 B&F's, so he's in the same box as Richo (Sheeds won his in the 70's - no comparison).

I hope he doesn't pollute our club with the 90's Tigers culture - remember Sheedy definitely imported the 70's Tigers culture.

But that's the past. I hope I'm completely wrong on all counts.

Prove my fears unfounded Knighter; I'm behind you 100%. Do us proud. Here's to MK coaching us for the next 27 years.

very happy . i heard all the players love him and that there will be changes made . We gonna have a quick and exciting side nxt year :thumbsu:

Oh dear oh dear oh dear.
This choice scares the living hell out of me. I have heard a bit from sources at Port Magpies and it was not good. The losing culture associated with him also worries me.

Yes I will support him and wish him all the best in getting the club I love back up where it belongs. I will show some trust in those who made the decision.

I'm just hoping I don't end up uttering the words, I told you so.

The fact that Knights knows the players already is neither a positive nor a negative. As far as I'm concerned, all it really means is that we will get to see whether or not Knighta will be a good coach sooner then we would with someone who is an outsider and needs to first learn the ropes of the club.

Points towards a possibly exciting next year or a major blowout...

At the moment you're sitting on the fence- so you won't be able to mutter or utter those words " I told you so". Are you in, or out ?

The question i want to know before i answer whether i want him as coach or not is will he delist bolton and others that he apparently gets along with so well? He would love bolton, bradley, dyson, jj and others cause they play really well in the reserves.

Didak, Thomas, Pendlebury, Goldsack, Davis, Cloke, Maxwell and Clarke just to name a few are just so poor arn't they...

Don't give him what he wants, you just talked up collingwood that's a no no on Essendons board.

I am just gona tip that knights will try to finish what sheedy started, sheedy wanted to have the quickest side in the comp. Injuries, hitten the piss and some poor form didn't help him but next year i would expect davey lovett dempsy winderlich jetta neagle rymiers playing in the same side at the same time not scattered through out the year.

he wouldn't have got the job with the plan to keep a shallow list just so bendigo would have these guys....

Stop whinging about the lieing, its not a big deal.

Knighter has my full support, as he should everyone. The selection panel is far mroe qualified to make a decision on our coach then anyone here.

Someone asked

"Yes he knows them (the Bomber kids) but can he coach is the question.

Does he know what it takes to achieve success....."

All I can say, and NO, this is not a troll, just stating fact, that he didn't have the answers when he coached the Port Magpies in the SANFL, we had a terrible year that season.

I couldn't be happier at Knights being your coach. What great success he brings.;) As a Blues supporter I used to fear your great club - I now pity you. To let go a person of the quality of sheeds and replace him with knights just because Bomber wouldn't comitt until the end of the year is a joke. I couldn't be happier:)

I was amazed the other day when someone posted your ladder positions in the last years. Your club really is a joke. I'm amazed one team can be that consistently bad. I think the problem with your club is that you get sucked into media hype. You do it so often with draftees and as a result you end up with players like Kennedy. It also leads to coaches like Ratten, whats his AFL record like by the way. For those interested, here are Carltons last few years.

2002: 16th
2003: 15th
2004: 11th
2005: 16th
2006:16th
2007: 15th

I'm staggered a team could not improve in that period of time. What a joke your club is. You better hope your young players start to show a bit, as Waite and co are mid 20s and have hit their glass celing. 6 years (certain to be 7) without playing finals is incredible in this day and age...congratulations.

Do you think he might also have learned a fair bit since then?

No offense, but coaching record as in wins/losses isn't always the best judge of a coach

He coached the Port Magpies in the SANFL. They didnt go too well. Not sure that the Bombers have done the right thing.

Edit : sorry just read Asgardians post.

We neither want nor need your pity.

I'm surprised you have any left to share considering who you support.

I hope Matty Knights becomes a Premiership Coach for Essendon in the next 5 years! I would have preferred that Sheedy stay an extra year (or two) and we nab Choco as soon as he was free.
At this stage Knights is known as a good footballer; but doesn't have the media profile to be recognised as an elite coach. Over time his profile should develop.
My only issue with the clubs decision is that Jacko and Ray Horshut I means "Horsburgh" stated publicly that the next coach needed to have been exposed to a culture of success (ie premierships). Premierships are foreign to Knights. Further being an ex-Tiger of the 90's most of his coaches were duds. Hence I hope he has learnt alot from Sheeds in the last three years!
In my opinion a 32yo Sheeds is better qualified than a 36 yo Knights as Sheeds played in several premierships and played for one of the greatest coaches of all time, Mr T Hafey.
Finally I do hope Knights does well. I like him. But if he doesn't I'd rather that Ray Horshu, I mean "Horsburgh" leaves the club as gracefully as Sheeds did.
