at the time what a deal for Geelong and even more so in hindsight
Yep great deal. Ripped us right off. Being a restricted free agent we had the right to match and trade. But the trade was shocking. Gore, pick 9 and 28. Got Milera and Menzel. Milera has always been injured. Menzel and Gore not up to it.

Well done Geelong. You screwed us a new one

What pick would’ve you ended up with if you didn’t match and who went with that pick?

Would have been pick 18 could have taken gresham or burton or mckay or dunkley (assuming swans didnt match) but there wasnt a lot of quality after that.

Sorry, I just can't abide this. The mere fact our clubs worked out a deal without having to go through the matching process, meant both clubs were happy with the outcome at the time. Dean Gore was someone you guys rated very highly and were really excited about, and we didn't want to lose either. Him + Pick 9 and 28 was half decent, but definitely not full value - as is the case with most trades.

You did the best you could from what we had. If you look at major marquee trades in history, guys like Buddy leaving only netted the Hawks Pick 19. For us, we ended up with two mid round firsts - 15 and 16 - before expansion club picks and early 20's picks after expansion club picks, for arguably the greatest player of the 21st century in GAJ. We traded up one of those picks to get Josh Caddy who was decent and got us Parfitt when he was traded.

We ended up with Billy Smedts and Josh Caddy, with Parfitt all that remains from the GAJ era trade. Smedts was a fail and Caddy was serviceable but nowhere near compensation for prime GAJ. In the end, we got very little out of that trade.

It's just the way trading works. It's always swings and roundabouts, and no-one really wins when a player leaves. Only time I can really remember where a club made out like bandits, is when Lachie Weller leaving netted Freo Andy Brayshaw at Pick 2. Otherwise, it's a bit of a crapshoot.

The Dangerfield trade definitely wasn't the best you could do, but it was the best of a bad situation. It was the same with us and GC. We could never match the contract offer they put on the table, so we had to accept some shitty picks instead of getting two of their Top 5 picks. You guys could have matched, but it would have been a pointless exercise as Danger wasn't coming back due to wanting to be around family and start his own down here.

It is what it is, but I don't think it made a huge amount of difference to your overall standing. You made a GF not 2 years later, and smashed us in the Prelim with Danger present, in that same year.

Milera could also still turn out to be decent, as Parfitt has for us, so it's not the worst outcome if that's all you end up with. It's not great, but it's not the worst. Getting a Pick 6 for Danger and then him leaving the game like McAsey has, that would be the worst outcome. As I said though, swings and roundabouts.
