Paul Roos - not the messiah

If Vince's goal had stood and the Melbourne defence didn't have 3 brain explosions in the last minute of the 3rd quarter, they would have been a chance to pinch it in the last. As it was, they had to open up more than they would have liked in the last quarter which afforded Collingwood the space they didn't have in the first 3 quarters.

The structure was there, the game plan was excellent for the cattle he had at his disposal. Those Melbourne fans grumbling about today have very short memories.
This :thumbsu:

You do realize Footy only exists as a form of entertainment for the fans?

If the Footy isn't entertaining whats the ******* point to play the game? Coaches have a responsibility to their code to not make the game hideous

Yep, typical roos flood choking football, awful

Bloody awful to watch, decent size crowd, not much atmosphere, don't know what it looked like on telly, but pretty crap in the flesh!

I didn't mind the game today, roos is coaching to his list and at this point in time he doesn't have the cattle to take the game on any faster. All you really need to see is a gradual improvement and we are seeing that. Pretty basic coaching plan, get your defence right first. Hats off to roos as melbourne are finally on the upwards curve.

Yeah, but even when he had a decent team they still played the same way. If you ask me Roos is playing a cheap brand aimed at protecting his reputation and holding his worth post his 2 years.

The umpire made it clear play wouldn't continue before the handball was even dished off.

Was a poor game, but that's what they resorted too to stop a hiding.

Which was a incorrect call.

His brand won the swans a flag. That was his job and he did it. I don't mind different tactics in footy, I find it quite interesting.

Buckley has had 12 Rounds of watching Melbourne was it a shock to him Roo's gameplan?

That's strange because every time you looked to take it forward there was no one in your forward line - where were they, in the beer queue?

That isn't remotely true, didn't help that Reid and White are both out so it's just Cloke getting bombed to 1v3 90% of forward entries. Goldsack was a decent alternative target as well as Elliott, but that was about it.

But yeah, our forward entries are ****ing shite.

Define "entertaining" to everyone's satisfaction. Come on, get cracking.

I happen to find the AFL endlessly entertaining and don't get in the least hung up on one single game. Breaking news - despite today's game, Aussie Rules is still the greatest game in the world.

It's not about everyone, it's about the majority. Do you think the majority of people thought that game was entertaining or not entertaining? Get cracking

If the AFL isn't entertaining it has no purpose and will die

Yet your criticising Roo's for not rushing it forward when he's got Dawes Pederson and Gawn .

I'm criticising Roos for not even trying to kick it to forward contests or into the forward 50 at all.

They scored 2 goals in 119 minutes of football - do you seriously rate Collingwood's defense that highly, or do you think perhaps that Roos is a defensive, shutdown, flooding coach who has no interest in encouraging his players to take the game on?

I'm sure if he had Cloke Franklin or Riewoldt up forward he'd have made more effort. Why didn't Buckley push blokes forward himself ?

It isn't like he was bereft of targets, but he either doesn't rate them or he doesn't trust them.

We had plenty in our forward line, we just entered it poorly and had to contend with 18 Demons players congesting the forward 50.

Collingwood play with 7 backs as a rule each week I don't see the issue of Roos doing much the same.

You define a subjective term like "entertaining" objectively and we'll take it from there.

He coached to his team then too. West Coast had the better team.

If he were coaching the Swans now he'd be a different coach, he was already adapting his tactics when he left.

Every team in the competition plays a minimum of 7 backs. THat's not the issue. The thing that turned so many people off about today's game was that Melbourne had no interest in playing football. 120 minutes of keepings off grew very tiresome.
On the point of restricting damage...is scoring 3 goals in an entire match really much better? It surely isn't great for the players' confidence or for attracting fans.

Neither is getting belted by 80 points every week.

I was asking whether 3 goals was better than the 80 point thrashings since others have posited that as the reason Roos coaches this way at Melbourne
Do you honestly think this is the finished product? That this is the way he wants his team to be playing all the time?

He's 11 games into one of the biggest rebuilding projects in recent years. He has to start somewhere and with Roos' mindset that's with keeping the scores down. To have gone a long way towards that goal is a big credit to him. This game is just another small step towards getting the side to playing better both defensively and offensively. To have Pies fans sook because you weren't allowed to play the way you want tells me all I need to know how successful the tactic was today.

It should be noted that the pies still doubled melbourne's score. in the context of the game it's a fairly large margin.

i haven't even seen the game and don't want to be subjected to it, or games like it.
