Paul Roos - not the messiah

Remember, no one rated the 'ugly' 2005 Swans.

They didn't have the polish or the flair of the other top sides, but they did have 14 100+ gamers, a genuine key forward in Hall and a great foil in O'Loughlin, a Brownlow medalist in Goodes and a collection of midfielders harder than integral calculus in Kirk, Bolton, Crouch etc.

By comparison, Melbourne had 6 100+ gamers today - two of which Roos brought with him and another who Neeld brought in last year. The experienced 'Melbourne' contingent consists of Frawley and Jones. Their best key forward option is AWOL, the next best is injured and the next next best is Chris Dawes - who also happens to be injured. If you were going into an elimination final, you might want Jones or Cross in your midfield but that's about it.

Picture Roos taking over in Sydney. In 1993. That's where he's at right now.

They will still be on the bottom of the ladder, they close up shop OR the AFL is going to have to step in and remove all elements of the past from board/administration level, football department AND playing list. A fresh start is needed, Roos is not the answer to Melbourne's cancerous problem.
Board is done. A couple have stayed but it's pretty much all new. Footy department - new recruiters, new list manager, new coaches. Same fitness boss in Misson, I'm sure he'll be reviewed but the issue right now is we don't run hard enough without the ball not that we can't. Injuries are something for him to look at but we have Viney and Garland back soon and after that it's ruck/forwards almost exclusively on the injury list sometimes that happens - ask Hawthorn's backline or Adelaide's forward line. The playing list has undergone some solid turnover. We need to keep adding young talent and some bargain buy free agents who can actually contribute, but until we reach a basic standard of competitiveness it's hard for anyone to improve in this team. I still believe for the sake of the competition there's scope for a second round Priority Pick on the proviso it must be traded for a player over the age of 22. I think the saints and dogs might be lucky to avoid a similar situation soon.

Round 2

If they had a forward line they would have been a lot better.

When Ross Lyons came to freo we thumped them early in the year - they returned the favour at the end of the. Year

Let's see what they look like in a few months eh

Chris Dawes is not the answer to Melbourne's woes

I dont think Roos is the master coach some think he is, but at the same time, he has only coached two games. The Demons are basically a massive pile of turd at the moment and its going to take a long time to get them right. A season at the least. My guess is that you will start seeing them play better toward the end of the year.

Did we all buy into the Paul Roos hype thinking he was the man that could turn the Dees around? Was this unwarranted?

Was he overrated as a coach due to Swans success that was helped by the 9.8% COLA?

Alternatively, has the game passed him? After all, he's had several years out of the game and his one and only flag was 9 years ago. A lot has changed since then.

Further, is he even interested in coaching Melbourne or is he only in it for the cash? He has no interest in sticking around - will be there for 2, at max 3 years. But worst, during one of the most important pre-seasons for the club with a brand new coach - Roos takes a holiday.

Let's be honest - if Melbourne wanted to dish up 15 goal losses at home, they might as well kept Neeld (and saved $600k a year too).

What nonsense - Tippet got up your nose, blame Andrew Ireland he did it with Lynch in the Lions days & it worked. Roos has a flu weakened cast at best - no thinking Eagles fan over rate our win today.

Would the board not panic and sack him before the contract expires ?

What if he has made no progress at the end of the contract, where to then ?

Didn't Melbourne get completely humiliated in one of their NAB challenge games as well?

The only thing Paul Roos gameplan has achieved so far is impressive Dream Team scores.

Roos hasn't just had 2 games, he has had six damn months and results wise nothing has changed in the slightest.

If they sack him after one yera then they are deluded. Demons have been terrible for what... seven years? longer? If memory serves they made the finals in 04? Anyway, its going to take a long time and alot of patience to get the list right. If the board panics and sacks Roos after one year then they too should be replaced.

Bit early to be pulling the trigger on this topic imo, but the questions will continue to come up as long as Melbourne keep dishing up rubbish.

I for one was under no illusions that Roos would turn things around in a hurry, if at all.

There is no depth to their list and they have no top-liners (maybe Jones is getting up there).

But they are a bit more under-manned than usual, and when your depth is so poor you can't afford to lose what little talent and structure you have.
They desperately need Viney back so they can get some more games into him, and also need Hogan to debut to add a bit of hope - he shapes as a genuine forward target.
You know things are desperate when a fit Chris Dawes really would make a difference. Wouldn't be holding my breath for Clark's return though.
A fit and in-form Jamar would be helpful, and Colin Garland is a decent defensive player who stiffens them up a bit in the back half.

There's a little to like with the midfield combination of Jones/Viney/Vince/Tyson & Cross, but it's nowhere near enough.

The list as it currently stands probably needs at least 3, probably 4 years of tinkering and development before it is capable of challenging.

To become reasonably competitive over the next few seasons, they will require :
- James Frawley's signature.
- Jesse Hogan to come on quickly with the support of a fit Chris Dawes and hopefully Mitch Clark.
- Todd Viney to come on quickly with support from Jones, Tyson, Vince and hopefully others in the midfield rotation.
- consistent football from the team's two biggest enigma's, Jack Watts and Jack Trengrove. Imo both need to make big strides *this year*, otherwise I'd be shopping them around at season's end. Watts hasn't been their worst so far but surely isn't playing the kind of role that was envisioned of him when he was initially drafted. Trengrove has gone backwards.
- role players like Matt Jones, Garland, Terlich and Howe settling into suitable roles and hopefully playing consistently.
- some of their high draft picks coming on under Roos' tutelage : e.g. Toumpas, who looks ok, and Salem.

As the OP points out, Roos probably won't be around to see out the job - in that regard Melbourne's compromise in signing him short-term did seem like a short-sighted decision - I understand there is a succession plan of some sort, but these players could really use some continuity in the footballing philosophies they are being taught. Roos ability to develop young footballers is inherently hampered by the short tenure of his stay at Melbourne.

even Jesus Christ wouldn't be able to save the dees
Are you suggesting a trade for Frawley. He is much loved at our club but if it is the will of the football gods, who am I as a mere Pastafarian to argue

Spangher would be one of Melbourne's better players. If Mark Neeld was there, we could realistically ask to trade him for Dom Tyson and Jesse Hogan.

Basically,

Melbourne are shit.

Paul Roos might make them less shit.

Summed up perfectly.

It took Ross Lyon a solid season and a half to take Fremantle from middle of the road, inconsistent underachievers to elite.

Roos may or may not succeed, but people who think it can be done in a preseason need to do something for the football fan genepool and slap themselves to death with their Record.

So if Jesus Christ himself can't save the Demons, where to from here for them?

It is staggering that year after year, coach after coach, they do not improve.

Gold Coast and GWS are improving. Port were a rabble in 2012 and widely tipped to stink for a long time but Hinkley turned them around and they improved very rapidly. Similarly all off season we heard how the Saints would spend years in the gutter and they've shown clear signs of improvement under Richardson.

These coaches were appointed to troubled clubs with much less fanfare than Roos. Obviously he won't be judged on 2 weeks but nor should he be excused if they continue to show no improvement at all. Next week is already critical.

They've lacked any sort of superstar player in years. Even just a top 50 one. The other recent cellar dwellers at least had that going for them. Saints have had and still have plenty. The Bulldogs have had Griffen, Cooney and even Hall in the recent past. Port and Richmond have developed some quality. Every time I watch them its literally like watching a WAFL/VFL club.

As much as I think Roos is overrated, there isn't much he can do about that.
