Clancee with 40 possessions, 11 marks, 6 insides 50s and a goal!!
Thanks so much PRO a great read. You contribute to our community so well.
Pretty good game of footy today at the Showgrounds. Dudley, you should have come down it was quite cathartic after witnessing the nightmare of my previous visit to Claremont. It was a solid effort by the entire team, and the regular Peel guys was all quite good with Jetta and Ugle being the pick of them.
Peel started like a train, they demonstrated some lovely crisp ball movement and moved the ball quickly into the F50. Blakely was on fire in the first qtr with some very good contributions from Langdon and Mz. One such example was when Hurley gathered the ball on the wing in front of the players bench and kicked a risky but beautifully weighted ball to Mz in some reasonably heavy traffic. Mz then moved the ball quickly into the forward line where it was converted for a goal. It was a delight to watch and exactly what we need the firsts to do.
The second qtr was a reversal of fortunes, the Claremont mids got going and controlled the ball for much of the qtr. Most forward forays by Peel were thwarted by poor kicking skills and it looked like the game might get away from our boys. The second half was a bit of an arm wrestle, it wasn't a tightly contested game but the respective half back lines were strong and the scoring dried up. I had to leave 10 minutes before the game ended but by this stage the game had turned into a high possession affair where players were able to rack up some big numbers with neither team being able to capitalise during their short periods of dominance. Eventually Peel managed to get the upper hand and Clarke kicked some clutch goals which decided the contest.
At the 3/4 time break I saw Lloydy and Cam running out on to the ground together with Lloydy holding the whiteboard and talking intensely to Cam all the way out to the huddle. Cam just listened to him the whole time which made me wonder who actually coaches the team on game day.
Of the more established players Clancee was the pick of them. I thought Clancee was ordinary in the first half, he didn't get a lot of the ball and some of his kicking was poor but he was the difference between the 2 teams in the last qtr, close to a match winning performance.
Mz was good but he flashed in and out of the game. His touch was very good and he was exceptional below his knees. Duffield played very much like he plays for Freo, it was a pretty solid effort by him.
Zac was OK, he dominated the HO's when he was in the ruck and contested a number of marks around the ground but his game never hit any great highs, although his last qtr goals were crucial.
Hannath was good, probably the best big man on the ground. He presented well when he was playing forward and took a couple of very strong marks.
Hurley was good early but went out of the game in the 2nd and 3rd qtrs. He looks quite natural up at full forward but he was competing with Zac and Moller for the marks most of the time inside the F50. He did something that I've always felt was one of the hardest things to do in footy, he changed his mind mid kick. He was ready to snap a goal but a Tiger's player stepped in front of him to spoil. Hurley stopped and propped mid kick and took another half step before firing the kick off but unfortunately he hit the post. There were one or 2 good signs from Sean today particularly in the first qtr.
I have run out of superlatives for Blakely, and besides, everyone is probably getting a little tired of all the glowing reviews from WAFL watchers. I will say one thing though, on top of all the other stuff that I've said about him this year I did notice today that when he handballs from congestion he always seems to find a target clear of the congestion. Many of his handballs in traffic today travelled 5 or more metres which shows he has good peripheral vision and finds space in traffic to get the handball away.
Langdon took up where he left off last week. I was a little concerned with his lack of a left foot at times. He tried kicking from the outside of his right foot a couple of times but the ball bobbled up high and put the recipient under serious pressure. Otherwise, a terrific game from Ed today.
I spoke glowingly about Hughes earlier in the year and he was good again today but I'm starting to think that his prospects at the club may be limited by the quality of his disposal. His physique is developing nicely and his composure in traffic is improving with each game but his kicking really lets him down and if he is going to hold down a role across the half back line he is going to have to improve his kicking dramatically.
TV and Deluca were quite good. TV took a really strong mark in the last quarter and kicked a goal from the set shot.
I was a little disappointed with Brady today. He got caught holding the ball on a couple of occasions simply because he couldn't make a decision about his disposal quickly enough. His kicking also let him down a couple of times, when he's running at full pace he tends to drop the ball on an angle and his kicks lack depth and accuracy. He did however demonstrate his renowned attack on the ball on more than one occasion.
Tanner was good and bad as usual. He is tough and courageous, he went back with the flight a few times and got a timely fist to the ball. He also pushed back hard on his opponent in marking contests and prevented him from marking the ball. But, and it's a big but, he tends to turn the ball over with stupid handballs to team mates in congestion and then when he tries to recover the situation he attacks his opponent awkwardly and over zealously and gives away a free.
I thought Dawson looked very scratchy on his first return from injury, also against the Tiges at the showgrounds, a few weeks back but today he looked like he hadn't missed a game. Obviously it wasn't a high possession game from Daws but he did his usual thing with aplomb and I could see him coming straight back into the firsts next week if required.
Ballard goes mostly unnoticed as he tends to be a pure clearance player and doesn't often carry the ball. It occurred to me tonight that he looks and moves like Bell from Carlton but Bell's game has come on very nicely this year whereas Ballard is still doing the same thing since he arrived at the club. Having said that, it was a really good game from Ballard today, his skills were good and I even noticed him kicking quite nicely with his left foot. I just wish he could add a bit more variety to his performances.
Yes great effort as always, deserves a prize.
Another big game from Langdon, from the little I knew of him I never thought he'd be able to start pulling down huge numbers every week.
Wasnt his predraft wrap as a running machine? Good to see he knows how to find it too. That draft could be a great one for us.Yes great effort as always, deserves a prize.

One of my favourite players from quite a few years back now was David Hart. A south freo boy who played his best football for the weags in the early to mid nineties. For those of you who remember Hart and maybe haven't seen Langdon play, they share a number of attributes. I always used to like the way Hart carried the ball out of the HB line with his head raised looking for a target further up the ground. Langdon plays in a similar manner, he might struggle to fill a highlights reel, he doesn't have the eye catching qualities of a Blakely or a Weller but he does the basics very well. Having said that, I'd be surprised if he got a game before either of those 2 this year though.I thought he was just another flanker who'd get it 15 times a week and do something streaky to get WAFL watchers salivating but otherwise do nothing of any real substance. He might genuinely be in the frame for selection now.

Clarke had both knees strapped but he moved freely and didn't seem to be hindered in anyway. Moller was looking pretty good before leaving the game with a shoulder injury which he sustained in the second qtr. He spent most of his time up forward where he plays an unusual role of second tall forward. He's reasonably good in this role because he can clunk a mark but can also compete for the ball when it hits the deck. He went into the ruck once or twice but the ruck duties were mostly performed by Hannath and Clarke.PR, great report mate, did Clarke have his knees strapped like the week before and how did Moller look till he got injured. ( the radio guys were reasonably positive in first quarter)
Thanks in advance

To be fair, I often forget who the captain of Carlton is too Murphy is pretty average as a captainThe radio said Marc Murphy was stand in skipper while Gibbs was injured as he won the coin toss, the ABC of all. Media are trying to write too fast to get first out there.
It's on that early as it's on 7 leading into the Sydney game.
Apparently Weller left for the airport straight after the game yesterday so I'd say he'll playAny news on whether the emergencies flew back early to play this game?
