Pendlebury should have gone pick one in 2005!

not at all, i was merely pointing out the inadequacies of your argument, which seemed to be that as a young player (Bower) had only looked very good in one game (he has been fair to solid in quite a few others), and therefore he was a dud. if thats his only good game of his career that he plays well in then i will agree whole-heartedly but he is just a young kid and to compare him to a washed up hack is a joke

My post was a 'stab' at the general's way of posting, the point of that part was that it was ridiculous to compare from one game as the general said murphy played better than thomas today...

comprende' amigo?

Would still go Murphy and would maintain the normal opinion on Robbo just going for the ratings. Murphy is showing this year what happens when he doesn't get the number one or two tag each week like he did last season.

Who exactly tagged pendelbury last season?

I think this also helped Murphy become a better player for the future since he had much more pressure to learn in

25 pages of flawd logic...and yet here I am adding to it.

The idea that drafts work in descending quality from one down is just plain stupid. Clubs go on what the young guys have shown to that point in time, and also what they need.

Murphy at the time was widely regarded as the best talent, and this year I think he is beginning to show just that.

How I rate them

1. Scott Pendlebury (Has showed more class and been a unique midfielder in a way in how he stops time; has achieved runner-up in the best and fairest in a year when we were a kick away from the Grand Final; and runner-up in the NAB AFL Rising Star)

2. Marc Murphy (Has had one injury, and then tags, but we know how good he is. Will probably have the better career, but at the moment, he is behind Pendlebury)

3. Dale Thomas (Unexpected at no.2 pick and was touted as a mistake pick before he pulled on the guernsey. Has excelled to not only be a consistent match-winner and provide terrific marks and skills infront of big crowds, but turned into the face of the club and major sponsors in such a short time)

4. Paddy Ryder (Has made a mark in defence after tested for versatility. Recognised as a NAB AFL Rising Star, and has only improved playing an important role in 2008 after gaining experience from Fletcher and Michael last season)

5. Grant Birchall (Been a terrific player for a successful team, showing clever skills by foot, a good football brain, and consistent dash off half-back. Suprised at how he stepped into the side and looked like a 100-game player in a matter of only a couple)

6. Nathan Jones (Twice a NAB Rising Star, and showed he is a gutsy ball winner who loves the hard stuff, but lacks the skill and composure at senior level still, but will all improve)

7. Matthew Stokes (May be not as young as some, he still had no experience and stepped in well in his first year, before producing a dynamite 2007 season in the premiership side, where he kicked 30 odd goals, great late pick up)

8. Shannon Hurn (Added to the back line in 2007 after showing his impressive skills in his debut season of 2006 to Eagles fans, playing a handful of games. Looks like a seasoned veteran and built like one too, he is a top player)

9. Mitch Clark (Has showed plenty, but injuries have setback his career so many times. Drafted as a ruckman with key position potential, he already has kicked a 5-goal haul and been close to a household name)

10. Andrew Swallow (Picked up in the fourth round, he's already a leader of the Roos midfield, playing almost 40 games already and shown a good display in and under as a terrific tackler who can be a match winner)

Next in line; Kennedy, Higgins, Gilbert, Ellis, Varcoe, Bower, Bartram, Hughes, Tuck, McKinley

From about midway through the season, either Pendles or Swan were tagged each week. Who else would they tag, O'Bree?!

No.

Ryder finished below Gibbs in last year's Rising Star award and it was his second year in the AFL.

Ryder isn't as hard or as complete as Murphy.

Upside and flashy "poster" marks don't count in my book.

We wouldn't make you an offer of Murphy for Ryder.

Ryder would have been part of the Judd trade if we had picked him at four.

No one's worried.

He's a gun.

He showed more than Thomas today.

Ryder is a KPP, generally take longer to develop than midfielders (Gibbs) poor comparison.

When it comes to non Carlton issues General, you're usually a well rounded poster, but you just can't help yourself. Murphy more "complete" than Ryder? Give me a break.

Lets see the 'weapons' Murphy has - Good kick, good endurance, good footy brain, knows how to find the pill.

Ryder - Good kick (better than Murphy), taller, faster, bigger leap, better mark, good footy smarts, more versatile (CHB, ruck, midfield (in the future) and CHF).

Murphy is a gun and I'd take him in a heart beat at Essendon but there's no shame in being less talented than Ryder - there's a lot of them out there.

Murphy is a more complete player than Ryder IMO and has more talent, smarts and hardness pound for pound than Ryder.

He's a genuine hard nut who gets hit by bigger bodies and doesn't flinch or complain like other do when they've been smashed.

Ryder's size, versatility and athleticism shouldn't come into it.

Murphy's vision and delivery by foot is clearly better than Ryder's as a mid.

Ryder is still more athlete than footballer if you compare him to a Murphy who has been brilliant this year.

I guess Cloke isn't one of those guys who has less talent than Ryder. ;)

Murphy showed Pendlebury and Thomas who was the better player two weeks ago.

Thomas did nothing today.

7. Matthew Stokes (May be not as young as some, he still had no experience and stepped in well in his first year, before producing a dynamite 2007 season in the premiership side, where he kicked 30 odd goals, great late pick up)

Stokes' 2008 form has been the best of anyone from that draft.

Averaging 20.4 touches, 8.4 marks and 2.4 goals.

Obviously it's only 5 games, but not often you see a player in his third year of footy put together those numbers.

I'm sick of all you Collingwood supporters, you are all so stupid. Murphy is so much better than Pendlebury and I'm sick of you losers bringing up these stupid threads over and over again, get something new to argue with Carlton about. You failed with Dale Thomas vs Marc Murphy, and you're going to fail with Pendlebury vs Murphy.

Really couldnt care less who other teams rate as the best kid from that draft, I do know however that I am EXTREMELY comfortable having Murph at our club. Getting beter and better, and will be a dominant player in the league in future years.

Murphy clearly the pick number 1 that year. Pendlebury at 2 in hindsight...but ultimately no one tipped him to even make the top 10...so it is a true drafting success story for Collingwood,

But Murphy is the complete player. Yet to see Pendles battle a tag.

refreshing to see an unbiased collingwood supporter :thumbsu:. vulnerable breed they are.

obviously everyone knows by now that murphy is the best player from his draft and will always be but like you pointed out, thsi shouldn't take away from the recruiting of the pies. it was an incredible effort to take him at 5 and then to turn him from a basketballer into a potential future star of the game. in hindsight, yes pendles is the 2nd best from this draft but it wouldn't surprise me at all if collingwood already knew this before picking thomas at 2. i'm sure they would have been expecting to have pendlebury still around at pick 5 but the same can't be said about thomas.

Great post, because you have no bias.

Oh wait...

I agree, Murphy has been much better this year and should continue to do so as long as he has 2 better midfielders in the team and he gets the opposition 3rd best midfield tag, he'll be sweet.

i can't believe how many people got sucked into last year. could you seriously not work out how difficult it must have been for a 2nd year player to get the no.1 tag? did you all forget his first season that quickly?? i'm full of praise for pendlebury but some people get sucked in way too quickly. and pendlebury played a blinder today.

everyone needs to ask themselves one question?

what would they think if murphy had gone at 5 and pendlebury at 1.
i for one would be a touch uncomfortable with carltons recruiting if we picked pendlebury at one

great point. i'd be spewing if we got pendlebury at one and then murphy went at 5.

Ah, but we could have got Pendlebury at 4...now that would have been tasty! Murph to me is the better player, but Pendlebury is very very good. Would have looked very nice indeed in lue!
