Roast People are Too Harsh on Brodie Grundy

Kennedy will come in for Adams.

If he gets suspended. And I'm more of the opinion that Josh Thomas will come in, has looked good in the VFL and we all know what he can produce in the seniors. If anything, I'd be interested in seeing Goldsack out for Witts maybe - just to see if we're more balanced.

I'm not sure what this is about, might need some help.

To me, Brody is a young, very promising ruck who doesnt have the body yet to go one out all match, and who never stops having a go even when it means writing cheques his body can't always cash.

Against Geelong, he played a game you would expect from the above, maybe even a little more. He's doing all that could be expected, and all that you could ask, and I think the vast majority would agree. The issue is more around options for giving him more assistance and or managing his load over the season.

I didn't even realise he was copping criticism TBH...

What exactly are people expecting? He's still a couple of weeks away from his 20th birthday. You could count the number of guys who have been #1 ruckmen (without being just injury fill-ins) at his age on one hand I would have thought.

What. WHAT?

Did Grundy have a great game for his age or am I missing something?

Ceglar. Really?

Yeah you missing something. Grundy needs a second ruckman to help him. Preferably someone with a bit of athleticism and can play forward... oh wait.

I don't think there's anything to be concerned about with Grundy. I thought he contested really well for as long as he could manage last night.

No one is harsh on Brodie Grundy, we are harsh on the clubs decision to go in with him as the number 1 ruck. Which is causing bad performances thus getting criticism

If anything the problem is Witts. The club has put alot of work into Witts and he seems to be coming on a bit slower than the club had hoped. That's why you have a second year player overtaking him.Grundy is doing fine.

Witts is only 18 months older than Grundy, and is only a third year player himself. Just because he was around the club occasionally as a NSW scholarship holder, doesn't mean that he's not still going to take time to develop like any other player. Think of where Aaron Sandilands (the only player in the league bigger than Witts) was at the same age as Witts, in his third year on an AFL list (2004), and what he eventually developed into once he reached his prime years (25-29 years of age, 2007-2011), and continues to do now when fit. Witts is definitely worth persisting with and giving gametime too. Would like to see him in the side to give Grundy support.

Witts needs to step up like Dawson Simpson has at Geelong.

Simpson is also 25 years old, is now in his 7th year on an AFL list, and has played just 14 games. Witts is developing in leaps and bounds by comparison.

He's not that fit, that is the major issue, but neither would Witts be.

It's way better to have Grundy take the lions share and get fit through the season with spells to recover. Do we really want to double the loping ruck issue by having two rather than one? Grundy (or Witts) plus some relief ruck is the best option.

Not averse to starting Grundy and Witts, and subbing one off for a runner in the 3rd quarter. The problem is, knowing our guys, we'd have a game-ending (if not season-ending) injury 5 mins into the game.

Knowing our luck the last few seasons it could happen in the 1st Minute

If we knew that Simpson would play it's a possibility and also against maybe the Eagles, but in general, I think I'd prefer the run until Witts can hold his own up forward.

Well Grundy did go 3 against 1 vs the Cats

I think we have the flexibility to add a second ruck while Reid is out. I think it would help out Grundy for a period of time early in our season. Before Reids return and he has to fly solo again. That would be good player management, and I'd hope help Grundy see out the season. I'm also pretty confident Witts can do the business up forward. I am more interested in if he can hold his own in the ruck, where he really needs to keep up his development.

Lethal has been saying that hitouts dont matter as long as you win the clearances - seems that some still dont rate ruckmen in the modern game.
Look at the Bombers stats so far tonight, they dont have a real ruckman, getting smashed in hitout numbers, also slightly fewer clearances but still killing the Blues (although admittedly for reasons other than the ruck contest).

It's very unlikely that we would play both Grundy and WItts together, we would just be too slow. I think Grundy needs to have his minutes in the ruck managed, he needs more relief than he has been getting. As well as White, we also have Keeffe, who needs to at least provide a contest for a few minutes per qtr. We need to put time into developing his ruck skills so we have another option to spread the load.

Evidently he was too busy trimming his mo during the 2007 Preliminary Final.

Witts would only make this even more difficult as he does not know how to lead to a target or jump for a contested mark in the F50 yet.

Or Witts could play the role that Bucks is wasting Cloke in - the stay at home non leading, non jumping wrestling forward. Cloke could go back to his old role, which he performs best, of being a hard running Centre half forward. We gain a genuine second ruck and a gun Centre Half Forward.

Ceglar looked reasonable for Hawthorn on Friday, just saying

Ceglar reportedly had an attitude problem at Collingwood. Would he have improved and pulled his finger out if he had been kept on? Maybe, maybe not.

The one I'm still angry about is that limp squib spud Cameron Wood...

So bring in Ben Kennedy to replace him, he's a pacey outside mid who has good goal sense. Like for like.

We don't have a 'Grundy problem', we have a 'our delivery into the forward line is disgraceful' problem. Witts would only make this even more difficult as he does not know how to lead to a target or jump for a contested mark in the F50 yet.

Exactly.

We also have 'Cloke or bust' tall forward problem.

As you say, Witts doesn't have those key forward smarts. That's one asset Lynch has, for example, which is why he should be played in tandem with White as a full time key forward, giving Cloke the extra assistance.
