I hope none of them were in a rush to get home, it took 2:10 mins to get home from the Pink concert, officially longer than the concert

Predictably, it was a huge problem again. Tom Tate says he's going to do something about it. I'll believe it when I see it.

For us, it's going to become a big problem soon. We sold out like half our home games this year and we didn't even play finals. What's it going to be like when we do play finals?

It’s unacceptable that 14 years in the bus system that was inadequate in 2010 is still broken.

I have said it before but put a walk bridge over Broadbeach Nerang road and have North bound buses on that side and South in the existing bus space, it’s not a permanent solution but ffs it’s better than the debacle we have atm.

If this news story is to be believed, the Lions will be looking for a new home for several years in the lead up to the 2032 Olympics. I suspect our stadium will be the frontrunner to host most of their home games during those years and that will hopefully force a few upgrades to the infrastructure in the area. Especially if the capacity is increased.

 
Saw some scaffolding in the stadium during the members function. Is it finally getting a scrub? It’s been really dirty the last few years

Item 1 – Improving transport at Gold Coast Sports Precinct and Carrara Stadium

My first item relates to improving the transport infrastructure at the Gold Coast Sports Precinct located in Carrara.

The precinct plays a significant role in the Gold Coast sporting landscape the Brisbane 2032 is the perfect opportunity to improve transport infrastructure to enhance the spectator experience. These improvements need to happen whether the Games was coming to the region in 2032 or not but as a key sports precinct of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, these improvements must be considered to enhance efficiency and leave spectators with a positive fan experience.

The precinct includes four key venues including:​
  • Carrara Stadium or commercially known as People First Stadium (home of the Gold Coast Suns in AFL/AFLW, as well as hosting occasional cricket matches and concerts)​
  • Gold Coast Sports and Leisure Centre (home to Gold Coast Basketball and is a community multipurpose sporting venue that has hosted elite basketball, gymnastics netball and table tennis events amongst others.​
  • Carrara Indoor Stadium (home to Squash Australia and is an indoor multipurpose venue)​
  • National BMX Freestyle Facility (home to AusCycling’s National Centre of Excellence for BMX Freestyle including an indoor training centre and includes the international standard Hurricane facility making it Australia’s first competition standard course)​
Across the year, thousands of spectators and athletes visit the precinct through elite sporting events (such as the AFL and NBL basketball), community sport matches and training, car shows, exhibitions, outdoor markets, concerts and state and national sporting championships. I expect this to only increase as Gold Coasters get inspired by Brisbane 2032 and encouraged to get out there and take up a sport.

Attendances at the main stadium, Carrara Stadium as home to the Gold Coast Suns in the AFL are expected to increase given the rise of the men’s team performance. Without the improvements, there is a risk that the current transport infrastructure will not be able to handle the large crowds that attend events at the stadium. Looking at the crowd figures from the 2024 AFL season, there were four sell-out matches with a 12% growth in membership (26,157 members) and a 16% growth in attendance (average 16,919). This is expected to rapidly rise as the team continues to perform and improve and become a challenger for finals and premierships.

The precinct was home to the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games with Carrara Stadium hosting the Opening/Closing Ceremonies alongside Athletics and Gold Coast Sports and Leisure Centre hosting Badminton, Weightlifting, Powerlifting and Wrestling and according to the existing venue plan, the Gold Coast Sport and Leisure Centre in the Carrara precinct will be hosting Judo and Wrestling (Olympics) and Boccia (Paralympics).

There are no sports currently assigned to Carrara Stadium however given the Cricket is likely to be included to the sports program given it’s inclusion for LA 2028, it is fair to assume that the venue will host Cricket matches (potentially finals) given it is the second largest cricket stadium in Queensland (behind The Gabba) and it has hosted men’s and women’s domestic and international cricket in recent years. The precinct could also host the BMX Freestyle event if it is deemed necessary for that sport to be moved from Victoria Park to make way for the proposed Olympic Stadium. With this in mind, it is expected that the Gold Coast Sports Precinct will be a hub of activity come the Games and would mean that the precinct would be hosting four Olympic sports and one Paralympic sport which well and truly justifies investment into improving transport to the precinct for the 2032 Games and beyond.

Currently when there are large crowds in the precinct, it is a nightmare to exit. I attended the Opening Ceremony of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games and with 40,000 spectators all exiting the venue requiring shuttle buses, it was a nightmare with crowd crushing evident Unfortunately the shuttle buses just could not cope with the crowds. That night I did not get back to my accommodation in Broadbeach until well into the early hours of the morning. Despite not having attended recent major international acts held at the stadium recently such as Harry Styles, Pink and Peal Jam, I am reliably informed that the crowds attending these concerts also had similar issues six years on from the Commonwealth Games. I can provide a contrast to my experience with given I attended the recent Paris 2024 Olympic Games at a variety of events and stadiums including the Stade de France for Athletics, Rugby Sevens and the Closing Ceremony and the La Defense Arena for Swimming and Water Polo. The movement of spectators exiting the venue onto public transport was incredibly efficient and I am sure Brisbane 2032 organisers that were in Paris saw the same thing that I did. This was as a result of having a very well operated transport management plan and appropriate infrastructure to cope with the crowds. Every venue I attended had a linking mode of public transport. We need to remember; the Olympic Games is a mega sporting event not a local domestic sporting competition. We need things such as our transport to be up to be of a world standard.

It is important to note that Olympic Games rely on an efficient public transport system given the inability for spectators to drive to the venue. With this, there will be added pressure on the public transport system but I believe the proposals that I make would enable the system to cope with the crowd levels that attend the Olympics as well as ensuring that fan experience is improved for visitors to the precinct for years to come.

Given my familiarity with the issues of the current transport infrastructure around the precinct as I regularly attend sporting events at Carrara Stadium, I propose the following options are strongly considered by the Committee to review and investigate how the transport infrastructure at Carrara can be enhanced to ensure that it is world class for 2032 and beyond.

Below are a list of options that I would strongly consider the Committee review and investigate to allow the transport infrastructure to become world standard for the sporting precinct.
  • Light Rail Tram Spur Extension to the Precinct
  • Since the Light Rail was established on the Gold Coast a decade ago, locals and tourists have flocked to the ‘G-Link’ which has proved that investing in this important part of transport infrastructure has been well and truly worth it and is now an important part of life on the Gold Coast. What the precinct would incredibly benefit from would be a ‘east-west spur line extension’ going to the stadium (see diagram below of proposals). I note that this has been talked about and mooted for some time however has never come to fruition yet. The Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games is the perfect opportunity for this project to be fast-tracked. The line could come from Broadbeach South and cover key locations such as ‘Surfers Paradise Golf Club’, ‘Carrara Markets’ and terminate at Nerang Station adding an additional link to the Gold Coast transport system and by linking with rail at Nerang, it would ease congestion on the roads and at Nerang Station carpark. This is the best and most ideal improvement that would be of fantastic benefit to the precinct and region.​
  • Pedestrian Footbridge over Nerang-Broadbeach Road and Shuttle Bus ‘Loop’
  • A footbridge is another must addition that would assist with the spectator flow and overall efficient running of the existing shuttle bus service to the precinct. Currently for major events at the stadium, buses coming from Broadbeach need to travel northbound past the stadium waiting for traffic then make a u-turn and coming back south towards the stadium again waiting for traffic. A proposal to fix this issue would be creating a shuttle bus loop system and wait for traffic to then do a u-turn coming back south towards the stadium. A footbridge (I would suggest a minimum 10-15 meters wide) over the road would then allow bus bays to be placed on both sides of the road and allow for north-bound buses to Nerang on the opposite side of the road with the south/east buses remaining at the existing bus space. The buses then then run in loop from Broadbeach dropping off spectators at the stadium then moving on to pick up spectators from Nerang station and dropping them back off at the stadium before the bus continues it’s way back to Broadbeach to continue the loop again. If the tram extension occurs, the overpass footbridge could then have stairs down to the tram station in the middle of the road as well.​
  • Ferry to the Precinct
  • The Hopo Ferry service from Surfers Paradise could run on event days and provide an option for spectators to exit the stadium on the northern end of the precinct which would ease congestion around the concourse.​
The options above provide multiple options for spectators to travel to and from the precinct which would ease congestion, overcrowding and allow for smoother and more efficient flow of spectators.

The Gold Coast Sports Precinct in Carrara requires these improvements regardless of whether Queensland was hosting the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games or not but now that we are hosting the Games, it is the perfect opportunity to use the Games as a catalyst to improve transport to the precinct which would then have incredibly legacy benefits for the years to come.​
