Player Watch Pick #18 (2019) - Mitch Georgiades

Charlie is a good ruck, better than Lycett IMO, but his knees and ankles will disintegrate if he has to ruck full-time. As a forward, he is a scary proposition for oppo teams, so he draws their best defender, often two. This then allows our other talls in Marshall, Lord, Finlayson, and/or Georgiades to be more damaging. Dixon doesnt actually have to have a big score to be super effective in a game anymore.
Exactly this.

The problem is that in the past, we have bombed it high and long to Charlie, which is what the opposition sets up for.

This season, we're lowering our eyes and looking at the other forwards in the space that Charlie has created by drawing a crowd.

We can still bomb to Charlie on occasion, and we have the cattle to kick goals when the ball hits the ground - it's only an issue if that is our A,B and C game plan.

Charlie himself is an almost player. Gets his hands to everything, rarely gets outmarked - but drops far too many that he's done the hard work on. And then when he does mark them, his conversion tends to let him down. He kicks across his body and ball - something I'm surprised we haven't addressed/fixed.

But despite all of this, he is key to our forward structure. Lord has the potential to do a similar role for us - potentially even better - but once again, his conversion is letting him down.

Mitch was on the Gold Coast playing golf with Butters and Boaky over the bye.

Port Adelaide and Mitch Georgiades’ representatives will sit down and discuss his future over the next month or so as Power senior coach Ken Hinkley reiterated his confidence that the young forward will remain at Alberton.

Now attention turns to Georgiades, taken four picks later in the 2019 draft, with the Western Australian high-flying forward out of contract. The 21-year-old is recovering from a ruptured ACL he suffered in the SANFL earlier this year, which means there hasn’t been a rush to discuss a new contract with the focus on his recovery. It is understood that the Power and Georgiades’ camp are expected to sit down in the next month or so to discuss his future.
Georgiades is happy at the Power and on Friday Hinkley said he was confident he would remain at Alberton despite any potential lure of home.
“ I’m honest enough to say that with any of the young Victorians and interstate players the pull of family is real,” he said.
“We got Jason (Horne-Francis) back, we are never going to be totally immune for that and we will face that challenge ourselves but we lost Karl (Amon) last year wanting to return home. “Most of the time with all that stuff if you give them an environment that they thrive in and play good football in most of the time they will stay. “We’ve seen examples of players wanting to stay and Mitch is a bit different given that he has a serious knee injury that he is dealing with.
“We need to give him the fullness of time to make sure that he has all the information of what he is dealing with to let him recover from his knee.
“It is not a rush for Mitch and it is certainly not a rush for us as a club. “But we are extremely confident that Mitch loves being at our club.”
On Thursday Bergman expected Georgiades to re-sign.“It is up to him but he does seem like he’s loving it (at Alberton),” Bergman said.
“We’ll see what he does but I’m pretty confident he’ll stay.”

“The positive developments for Brisbane on Dev Robertson, who is now leaning towards staying and fighting for midfield time despite links to WA teams as the former WA state captain,” journalist Jon Ralph wrote.

Have to admire the way Port are managing their players ATM.
Having said that I'm 50 /50 with Mitch I am not sure of his ceiling and he could be easily replaced.
If he stays I want to see him add something significant to this side!

Do we really need a Dixon replacement? We have a team full of young players who are elite kicks

Imo we don’t necessarily need a Dixon replacement in terms of like for like.

A kf that can back up ruck would be ideal, but it’s not a must.

We do have Scully who could be that player in around 4 years time.

Exactly this.

The problem is that in the past, we have bombed it high and long to Charlie, which is what the opposition sets up for.

This season, we're lowering our eyes and looking at the other forwards in the space that Charlie has created by drawing a crowd.

We’ve played enough games now without Dixon playing to see that we’re not dependent on him to create space for our other kfs.

They do it themselves by moving, and our midfield helps by moving the ball from stoppage to forward entry quickly rather than the old shovel pass hot potato for 2 mins inside contest before you get it out.

Probably makes sense to have Charlie on the list for 2024 while Mitch builds his knee up again. Charlie is definitely on his last legs and we should be looking at Finlayson/Marshall/Lord/Georgiades for 2024 and beyond.

The concern with Georgiades he has to address is playing as part of a cohesive forward structure.

He is a natural forward and as a traditional old-time go-to full forward would do a lot of damage. He leads well, marks strongly and can take contested grabs.

But we are no longer in the old times, the forward line is a dynamic construction of complementary moving parts. Too often playing as a second or third tall, Georgie will fly against Dixon or Marshall looking for the speccie. It's like Bazball, it looks great when it comes off in the one in ten attempts, but creates chaos when it doesn't.

That's what Lord had over him when he was in the team. He's not the natural athlete that Georgie is, but he knew his role and was willing to sacrifice his game to improve Dixon and/or Marshall. And when his turn came, he was there for the contest and he takes footy smart options. Plus he has the size and aggression to hand out some of the off the ball physical stuff.

I hope Georgie stays, he could be a really damaging part of our forward line. He has natural forward skills and he is a scary match up. But he has to park the ego, and play a team game and not expect to be an automatic selection until he has shown his team first approach.

Fivelayson is so far ahead of him right now. Todd is untouchable unless injured. Dixon offers so much more around the ground that if its close you keep Charlie - its not like MG can go and ruck. I hope Mitch stays but if he expects to get 22 games next year without a drastic improvement in form it's just not going to happen.

He is a very good forward and performed okay when our midfield wasn’t performing.

He can gel beautifully with Finny and Marshall.

Dixon is in last legs, it’s folly to keep Dixon at Mitch’s expense.
