Some healthy, interesting discussions post this trade, before and after the draft

Firstly, I believe Jagga Smith is and will be an outstanding player, who, by reports has unquestionable professional and leadership qualities, a potential captain in waiting. That said, I also saw the potential benefits of retaining picks 12 & 14

Based on potential, is an A grader better than 2 x B+ players? Some say yes, others believe there is marginal difference in quality and we already have the top liners. Listed in the poll are players from the time of our original 1st rounder, pick 12, through to the last pick of the 2nd round (excluding Marshall). Will be slightly skewed given the Dockers had a pick in the middle

Personally, I would have retained 12 & 14, selecting Hannaford and Hynes (my other considerations were Berry and Oliver). So, would you have traded up to pick 3, or retained 12 & 14.

Either way, pick 2 players, if Austin had kept those late 1st round picks.

I will keep the poll open until the 1st week of the new season

Joe Berry and Murphy Reid.

It will be interesting seeing a list compiled of how many people named the same two players and how many people named different players to each other.

Good discussion topic.

I’ll start with while at first I felt uneasy about trading up, at this stage I think it was definitely the right decision, and am delighted to get Jagga. It’s so difficult for clubs in our position to get top line players.

If we kept 12 & 14 (15 & 17), I think probably Joe Berry, and then we probably have to go a tall defender, rather than necessarily best available.
So maybe that’s Trainor? But the concussions are a concern.
If not him then Shanahan can play back right? Or I guess Matt Whitlock.

It is pick 3 plus LC. Need to factor in the last player we drafted in in Campo as well as we only had 4 list spots. We might have taken a tall with one of the 2 early pick and not taken HOF as another Scenario
Correct, it would most likely have changed the overall outcomes

Lucas may have been added as a rookie, or if we missed out on O'Farrell, and may have taken Dennis as a rookie

Reckon the most likely route would have been to flip the Kennedy pick (or have received in the first place rather than 38) for futures/s.

Berry + Bo Allan...

Although, not sure both would have been available.

Reid I'm not keen on, so if Bo is not available, I'd probably go with Hynes or Hannaford.

Can't see any of those really addressing our midfield issues as much as Jagger would though.

I'm in the pick 3 camp. No guarantees in any draft... but the chances of drafting a top player with pick 3 far exceed that of pick 15 and 17.

I think it was a smart move overall. Factor in Walker in 2026 draft and come 2027, Cripps will likely be playing predominantly forward by then... would much rather have Smith with 3 seasons under his belt than not.

If we had retained our two picks probably Berry and Trainor or Whitlock, would have been my choices .
However given our cap squeeze, (TDK contract), Tassie team addition and relatively weaker draft cohort next year, Austin decided to snare an elite midfielder in the 2024 draft, I’m very happy with Jagga Smith selection.

We were aggressive with our trading/pick swaps … and then landed the least risky option in the top 5.

Unlike most others I don’t rate this years draft that highly - based on output - but Smith has some seriously good attributes. Not sure he’s the guarantee superstar most want him to be … but still a better bet than two picks in the teens imo.

I would have gone Trainor and Reid for argument sake.

I’m happy with the move to get pick 3 and take Jagga as I’m confident that he’ll be a high standard week in week out contributor in the pivotal part of the ground for 15 years.

His leadership will also likely enhance the synergy and performance of the squad throughout that time.

Having said that, if we’d kept 12 and 14, I’d preferred to have traded Motlop and Durdin (assuming they had takers) instead of Kennedy and Carroll, then drafted Berry and Hannaford. I think those two combined with our twin towers and Moir would help us to get better value from our forward 50 entries.

I think the introduction of Jagga will help us to get more and better quality f50 entries so hopefully that combined with fully fit versions of Durdin and Motlop will help us put on more scoreboard pressure.

Very happy with our draft outcome this year, no standout midfielders of the caliber like the top 5 within the 12 & 14 range that stands out, no doubt when there’s a redraft in future years, like always there’s gems that are picked up throughout all rounds of the draft…

I would have taken 5 in the draft, 1 rookie and 1 spot for a train on player most likely now being McMahon 198cm who can cover both ends if needed, Durdin and Grainger-Barras don’t inspire me to much…

Clancy Dennis I’m leaving out due to current knowledge of having multiple breaks to both feet which would be a big risk…

12.(15) Joe Berry 182cm fwd/mid
Class, creative, speed & works both ways, also potential to play through the midfield in time…

14.(17) Ollie Hannaford 182cm fwd/mid
Speed, elite pressure & workrate, inside/outside productive goal scoring multiple positional player…

40. Harry O’Farrell
43. Ben Camporeale
54. Lucas Camporeale

Very happy with Jagga, HOF, Campos and H4 but for arguments sake (hoping we would have still had 38):

12.(15) Berry

14.(17) Reid

38->40. Harry O’Farrell
43. Ben Camporeale
54. Lucas Camporeale

This arrangement would get us all we wanted - small forward, outside mid run, KPD, mid bull and hbf/wing

But still none of them have “the moves like Jagga”
