CLUBS EYE POWER FORWARD

OLLIE Lord is attracting interest from Victorian clubs, amid Port Adelaide's pursuit of Gold Coast forward Jack Lukosius.

Collingwood is in the market for a key forward and has enquired, while Melbourne has held long-term interest in Lord and is also understood to be keeping tabs.

Lord signed a two-year contract extension last December that ties him to the Power until the end of 2026, after Geelong made an advance during the Continental Tyres AFL Trade Period.

Port Adelaide has assured the 22-year-old he is part of the future of the club and doesn't want to trade him, despite Lukosius requesting a move to the Power.

Veteran key forward Charlie Dixon called time on his 14-season career on Wednesday, while Todd Marshall faces some uncertainty after another concussion ended his season. Lord should get more opportunity at Port Adelaide in 2025, but rivals are keeping an eye on his situation in South Australia. – Josh Gabelich

If he wants to stay, he'll stay. If he doesn't then life moves on. It's a position we have depth in. How much money should we be offering him, how many years? Ben Mckay has been a Coleman medalist and is getting roasted right now. 2 Coleman medalists, but can't kick a score.

People on here pot everything about the administration all day. Hinkley, hasn't won a flag, what a no hoper. People potted players like Sam Gray/ Mitchell/ et al who put in, but didn't have elite AFL attributes. But Georgiades gets an excuse for not being able to hit the side of a barn door when goals are in front of him. I'd take that 47% from him, the problem is it hasn't been 47% for ages.

I repeat. He kicked at 60% for the last third of season 2022. so it hasn't been that long. But I am not here excusing his yips. He needs to work on them and the team as a whole apart from Marshall who has already done so, need to work with a specialist coach/coaches on their kicking for goal.

I have issue with your opinion that we make space for a 21 yo 4 game forward by being blase about losing a 21yo who kicked 40 goals in 28 matches while still a teenager and is also only 21 yo, and has already proved his contested, aerial and leading marking ability beyond his years. He also has the athleticism and will develop the tank to move around the ground in different roles if required in a way that few players do, making him an extremely hard match up. If, as you say, he gets an excuse to get his kicking right, these are some of the reasons why.

If we dumped every young player with potential who kicked below 50% for a season we would never have seen the best of Tredrea, Dixon, Schultz, Marshall, Jack Riewolt, and Jeremy Cameron just to name a few. Few 21 yo key forwards bring complete, consistent games to the table.

There's a word in my posts that is doing a lot of heavy lifting. 'if'. If he wants to leave to get guaranteed games instead of staying, rehabbing, and working on a major flaw in his game, then it is what it is. This is all predicated on him leaving. We have a forward line that is functioning right now. Lord has been very good. His game has already shown things that are extremely likely to be repeated over the course of a career. He has simply marked everything. Being a monster when in position. He also crashes packs. Those things don't tend to be luck and form, they're innate. Georgiades did an ACL, it sucks for him, but it does raise the question on whether he will ever be the same. Additionally, his goal kicking has made him unpickable at times. If you watched the u/18 game it was butcher level of set shot kicking.

There's been a pretty significant buy in from players under Hinkley, clearly many players have taken unders to keep the list together. If WC come with sacks of cash, I am not sure we should be getting into an auction for his services. When we have other list issues, I am not sure keeping 5 AFL standard KPF's on the list is wise (or even doable past next year) or a straight Lord vs Georgiades comparison is the one to be making. Keeping Lord (who we will know more about by the end of the year) and maybe getting a defender with the pick/money Georgiades frees up wouldn't be a bad result.

  1. Lord has averaged 3 marks a game. The lowest average of our key forward brigade except for Scully. 1 contested mark, 1 on a lead, and 1 where he is basically stationary by himself. That is not indicative of a player who is marking everything that is coming his way.
  2. Kicking to a pack that Lord can crash is the lowest percentage play going inside 50. It should be the last option behind looking for forwards by themselves, kicking to a player on a lead and kicking to the advantage of a contested one on one. Is it admirable that he goes hard at a pack mark or spoil when he has to? Of course. Is it a high value trait when most incoming balls should not be bombs to a pack in hope? Not really.
  3. Above stacks of cash, ever player wants to be a premiership player first and foremost. It's unlikely for mine that Georgiades is going to go to a shitshow for this hypothetial stack of cash while in the middle of an ACL recuperation when he is at his lowest value. I don't see those considerations anywhere in your posts.
  4. Which players don't get to their best in this day and age when they follow the recuperation protocols for recovering from an ACL?.
This is not intended to be a Lord bash. Yes he has done well in his first four games. I like his atitude and how he goes for the ball. He has done some good things and stepped un admirably when needed. He definitely has tools and traits that can be worked with. But to say IF Georgiades leaves Saul Goodman because Ollie has shown us what he can do now is just ludicrous.

Ones got a frame that will carry 110kg and the other 95kg.

Ollie should end up looking like this.

He’s from the Geelong area. Hopefully, he plays the rest of his AFL career here and doesn’t get lured over there.

Plays 15cms taller

Think you’ll find Georgiadies plays ‘smaller’ than he actually is…
Patrick Cripps is taller that Georgi. 195cms vs 192cms. Lord is 197cms. Ryan Burton is 191cm. You are right, its the way you play that matters the most.

Nah he's from Brighton - played for Sandringham Dragons, not Geelong Falcons, but went to Geelong Grammar and was a boarder there for his last few years of high school.

For an Ollie Lord thread there are a great deal of posts that are nothing but Mitch Georgiades or 90% so. It's Ollie who's worth discussing here. The paths of Lord and Georgiades have never crossed at AFL level and probably never will.

Port have no (Charlie) Dixon, no (Todd) Marshall, no (Mitch) Georgiades,” Lyon said.
“So you know what you do? You put a kid like Ollie Lord in there and say: ‘Ollie … I don’t care what happens, you compete and don’t you ever get outmarked’.”
“This is the reason why Port Adelaide are the best in the comp at conceding intercept marks,” Brown added.
“The kid comes in and just competes and competes and competes. His number aren’t sexy, but they would love him because he doesn’t allow intercept marks.”

I was thinking that the other day. The just competes, gets to the contest and refuses to be beaten. Coaches would love that.

He’s basically the opposite of Daniel Stewart

Tredders tonight on his AA segment was very positive about Ollie, said he leads better than Dixon and Marshall for the ball, is more demanding, smashes into packs and says he shouldn't be dropped just because Marshall and Dixon are available - - make them earn their spot via SANFL. He talks about their fitness, Charlie carrying injuries and Marshall with concussion should not be put straight back in and Lord gets the automatic chop.

He starts talking about our forward line from 3.00 - talks Ollie Lord between 3.35 and 4.05, then talks about the whole forward line mix especially if we ruck Lycett and keep SPP and DBJ in the forward line - ending that discussion around 8.40.

yep, ollie leads and hits the contest like a forward

marshall is more skilful but he doesn't player like a full forward

I see a fair bit of promise in ollie - like many here so no need to repeat what’s been said.

What has to happen now is a balance between Ollies development, the well-being of Marshall and Dixon, and what’s best for the team.

I reckon there would be few that would say ollie was more likely to kick 3 or have 6 score involvements than Marshall to Dixon, but in the same sense - another week in with one of those two coming back is further exposure to the level for him.

I see him dropping out of the side at some point barring a breakout game - so if that happens then he needs to go back and be given a role that allows him to work on the areas identified for him.

If he drops out at some point the aim would be to see him kick a bag or have a couple 15/20 touch games up forward clunking a few marks etc.

I would probably leave him in another week - hopefully with one of Dixon / Marshall and then we make the call round 13 on whether he stays in for the dogs game or goes back for a few based on how he is progressing.

I agree with Gary and abhor some of the movement in our forward line especially when we have guys with good kicks like Butters, Rozee, Horne-Francis, Houston, Burton, Finlayson and other kicking into the F50 and no one leading hard at the ball. Drives me crazy.
