Player Watch Pick #49 (2020) - Ollie Lord

Should be dominating at Sanfl, needs a couple of big games, with multiple goals.
Agree with what you say, I just think he’s one of these odd types that doesn’t play that well in the minor leagues.
Needs some games in a row at AFL level to see if he’s worth persevering with.

This guy is #1 on the depth chart for power forwards at the club and that chart doesn't have a #2. That combined with the fact that we play a game style where power forwards who compete relentlessly are extremely important makes his non selection totally baffling.

The Lord was with us, but we kept ignoring him. Instead, we worshipped Kenny and Kochie as our saviours. We praised our Sinn.

We paid for our hubris. It was divine Justice. Amen.

I’d like to see him tear up a game for the Magpies so he gets his confidence up . He isn’t a real presence as yet , he does compete well and seems to have a good attitude , good build and height but doesn’t really draw the ball . There’s a spot for him if he can go to the next level

Before judging Lord, I would like to know some things.

Although we love to pick flashy flankers, we have drafted some talls in the current regime. What happened to them? How many tall players have we actually developed under Hinkley? Why do other clubs seem able to develop theirs? What do they do that we don't?

We are either bad at identifying potential good talls, bad at developing them, or bad at both combined. What is it?

Its all politics. Ollie hasnt drunk the koolaid.
That could be a fair whack of it.

I mean, we desperately need a contesting, marking forward and we desperately need a 2nd ruck. Lord fits the bill.

A few have said, sometimes you've got to back a young guy in and it would help tenfold with structure which Kenny Average is not a big fan of.

Yep everyone just has to stick fat for 12 months til we get a real coach

If your name isn't Todd or Charlie and you want an extended run in the forward line, you better be less than 6 feet tall.

He's definitely not doing something right at training, from the sounds of Carry yesterday. Wish he was though ... there are few players we need to smash it up more than Ollie.

It makes selection for games and the games themselves seem like living in Limbo which is the first level of the Abyss which actually isn't really that far from the truth.

Before the decision, this year had the strong feeling of a write off and that this year would be the nadir of Hinkley's 13 years of failure.

With the official line, it has just moved everything into microscopic analysis and even the AFL media are enjoying putting the boot into Hinkley which they are not usually allowed to do.

For mine, the only real aspects of his year will be Carr working out what he wants to do next year. Seeing guys like Berry and Moraes play means Carr can see what he has. In the same way, I'd usually be upset with Burton or Boak or Jed but Carr will see their form as well.

I just hope Carr is looking to the next future flag. He should be working really closely with the List Management Guys as Carr should know what he needs soon enough.

Josh Carr on Ollie Lord’s form:

“In previous years, he's been knocking the door down and coming into the team, and just at the moment, he's probably just a little bit off in regards to his own form. He's probably a product a little bit of those injuries in the pre-season, because in the pre-season games, he was played in the ruck a lot. We're just trying to give him his best chance now to go forward at the Maggies and get his form up so that when he comes into the AFL team, he comes in with confidence. And, like I said, it's probably the ruck stuff, probably holding him back a bit in that in that pre-season, we needed someone to compete against (Jordon) Sweetie, because we didn't have the other two guy and Lord, he was that guy that went in there. Hopefully from now on, he can build that form at Maggies.”

Carr wants to give him a chance to show his best form.

In other words, we sacrificed Lord’s forward game to give our sole ruck some practice and now he’s behind where he needs to be.

He’s shown what he’s capable of in the senior team. We just need to give him another extended run to build his form. I’m still hopeful that he’ll get there.

How rankly unprofessional does that sound when you put it like that. Matthew Lobbe is employed by the club full time, get him to be Sweet's practice donkey.

2019 - 4 marks & 2 goals over 5 games in the Melbourne under18s comp

2020 - No football because of COVID

2021 - becomes a guaranteed AFL player being held back by Dixon, Kent Hinkley and Chad Cornes

Nail on the head.

What does that actually mean??
