AFLW 2024 - Round 9 - Indigenous Round - Chat, game threads, injury lists, team lineups and more.
I've always wondered if the decision to go with Jonas as captain this year despite his form looking borderline best 22 in 2022, was because the club already had plans for Rozee and Butters to be Captain and VC and they weren't ready for that in 2023.The number 1 really does suit Connor. I'm excited to see how his captaincy style will rub off of the playing group.
Interestingly, he mentioned quite quickly that the most important part of being the captain is to maintain your form. I don't think it was a dig at last year's poor form of Jonas but it was definitely a mild-mannered tip of the hat to get the basics right and an even lighter tip of the hat of acknowledgement of a poor decision.
Yes, given some sound bites recently by Rozee and Butters, they have both expressed that maintaining their form in the side which is All Australian which is fantastic is very important to them.I've always wondered if the decision to go with Jonas as captain this year despite his form looking borderline best 22 in 2022, was because the club already had plans for Rozee and Butters to be Captain and VC and they weren't ready for that in 2023.
I guess they were probably hoping Jonas could hang on for one more year and that his form wouldn't drop away as dramatically as it did.
And if they changed it up last year, Wines was our only realistic option, and they probably wouldn't have just given him a year of captaincy and then moved him on. So if we made the change for 2023 i think Wines would still be our captain and we probably would've had to wait another year or two for Rozee, and Wines could've potentially found himself in a Jonas 2023 struggle.
So whilst it wasn't an ideal scenario this year, it probably worked out for the best in the end.
It's already tucked away under the desk
Agreed, a highly skilled captain who would have been the absolute best player on the list at the time (eg John Cahill and Russell Ebert), or not too far off it for a number of others who had the ability to do something out of the ordinary and inspire their team mates is much more in line with the Port Adelaide I grew up supporting.Yes, given some sound bites recently by Rozee and Butters, they have both expressed that maintaining their form in the side which is All Australian which is fantastic is very important to them.
I don't know with what you said is true but it wouldn't surprise me if most of it is true. I think that it may have had an impact on the playing group seeing their captain playing poorly and also getting dropped and really hanging on for dear life. You look up to your captain, you don't look down. So it was probably a poor decision and Wines wasn't a long term option so maybe 2203 was a 'bardo' year for captaincy but I think we are super duper back on track. Sometimes it just doesn't work out time wise.
I wrote a big post about where improvements would come in 2024 from the team and didn't realise the possibility of how much Jonas as captain in name only may have affected the group in a negative way. Given the All-Australian form of Rozee and Butters, they may give a huge inspirational, impact to the playing group. Given the form of Houston as AA in the leadership group, we are good to go. The other two in Powell-Pepper and Drew are no slouches either.
I think we are set for quite a while. Great news considering recent years.
You missed WanganeenIf I have done my maths right and we assume the first game of the season is 1st April, not worry about the day of the announcement, then Connor is the youngest captain since Bob Quinn was appointed Captain / Coach for the 1939 season.
Rozee born 22 January 2000 - assume 1st game 1st April 2024
Quinn born 9 April 1915 - assume 1st game is 1st April 1939
You can argue Connor officially got the title at a younger age than Bob, as Bob probably wasn't officially announced until February 1939 on the eve of preseason training starting in February back then, but to be made Captain and Coach before his 24th birthday was a remarkable feat.
So I did. I thought he was 24 come 1st April 1997.You missed Wanganeen

I don't know what went on behind the scenes but certainly it was incumbent on Jonas to relinquish the captaincy and focus on his form. He was sliding badly in 2022. He must have known during the preseason that it was best for him and the club if he stood down.
However the onus did not rest solely on him. It was up to the powers that be to take him aside and tell him objectively how things looked from the outside. I would have to think if this were handled properly that Jonas, a dual Fos Williams medalist, would have done the right thing.
At the beginning of the 2023 Jonas made it clear how the captaincy would be awarded:
"Obviously it’s a privilege to lead the club and I love it, and I’ll keep doing it for as long as they want me to, as long as the playing group and coaching group think I’m the man for the job."Having been awarded the captaincy, Jonas obviously did the best he could with an ailing body but it was clear the wrong decision had been made.
I don't think Rozee was having a dig at Jonas or the decision to make him captain at all. He was part of the playing group that appointed Jonas. I just think he was stating the obvious, that as captain and one of our best two players we need him to be maintain form while stepping up into the role of captain. Addressing any concerns that had been expressed on her and by other supporters as to whether he would be able to take on the captaincy at his age and still play at the highest level.
Wines was, to all extents and purposes, the onfield captain this year. Whether he was approached about the captaincy or not I believe he has done the right thing in focusing on recapturing his form, providing for a smooth changing of the guard to our next generation. Good on him.
Nah! You are reading too much into it!To have both the captain and the vice-captain bring it up in their first radio interviews and near the start shows that it is a very important aspect they wanted to bring up, whether it was their own ideas or a directive from the Power Propaganda, it is a little bit bizarre to talk about that specific element. There are much more interesting and pressing matters that a captain and vice-captain should want to express than their form.
I mean Tom Jonas was so bad last year he was dropped. I still remember the farce that was the carrying off of the captain when he didn't even play the game. Just a weird look.
And then to double down on form, Rozee is a two time All- Australian and Butters is an All-Australian and Coaches Player of the Year 2023. They are two of the most in form players in the comp.
For mine, it is a touch worrying, a touch, because I would prefer to hear Rozee talking about gunning for premierships, Butters too. But we have plenty of time to see how it works out.
Does it even matter at this point? He was trash all of last year and the midfield was fine.Where does this leave ollie Wines? lift the pressure like Boak, and improve his form. We lose him next year?
Nooooooooooo!
