Wonder how much Cerra actually wants to go home and how much he would’ve liked to stay at Fremantle..
Forget not drafting Vic metro just don’t draft a player with partners not from WA. Lobb is another example. Heh imagine if he kept due to his partner working in Melbourne.
Mundy was a single man coming to Freo. Same as Pav. Tabs as well.
Brad Hill sticks out as being quite disappointed having to go back to Melbourne.

And We should appoint Tayler as a WAGs liaison officer...

Watch us over the next 3 years, once Darcy, Andy, Serong, Young, Chapman, Henry, Treacy et al all have 100-150 games under their belt and we're at the pointy end of the ladder, become a place other WA draftees want to be drafted by or traded to.
Hopefully none of them get ‘home sick’

From now on any vic kids must meet two criteria. Not in a relationship and already moved out of home. May solve the homesick/partner issue.

Do you have a partner? Yes? Okay next.

If Horne-Francis left WA a few weeks back without having a Fremantle-based girlfriend then the club officials need to lift their game.
Shhh you'll give Nisbett ideas. A crack squad of secret of honey trap footy girl(boy/nonbinary)friends? The world is full of plans so crazy that might just work and sometimes the only thing between them and actual implementation is a megalomaniacal sociopath in a position of power and Dunning Kruger syndrome.

I know this is a joke but if I had a job where I wore a non club branded AFL polo, with my little ID, and interviewed family and friends of the potential draftees attempting to manipulate them into spilling what they really would have planned behind the scenes, how much they would be willing to move their lives to another city - I'd crush it.

The player managers would cotton on really fast and brief everyone and I'd have to get creative like sitting in the coffee shop down in the lobby of the hotel the club is interviewing the player in, knowing exactly what the family and friends look like and overhearing them mention football interviews before pouncing with some quality disarming chat.

The secret would be to vet the influences like they are the talent, weight the talent by them and then proceed.

If you think you'll turn a Melbourne girl into a Perth lover, you're wrong. If she is part of the cult that loves the place, and we have many in Perth who can't wait to get to their spiritual homeland as soon as they can, you aren't changing her mind.

No point in getting angry with Cerra and Carlton. Blame our List Management people.

From what I heard Cerra made it plain that he did not want to go interstate yet our people took the gamble. This sort of thing will continue to happen unless we prioritise local talent.

Lets not forget that of our top end young talent - Sturt, Young, Serong, Brayshaw, Chapman, Henry and Logue - more than half come from Victoria so we are going to have to cross this bridge again in the near future. I am fully expecting to lose another 2 to the "go home" factor.

Really who else i think cerra will be it the rest have been pretty committed and haven't given a vibe that they have any intention of returning to Vic.

Brayshaw will be a docker for life he is made of the right stuff when it comes to loyalty and will lead us through to become freo's first premiership captain.

Serong looks like a similar mould. Hard as nails hasn't given me a vibe yet he has any plans of leaving.

Vic kids are the problem, it’s predominately metro kids. Both us and Brisbane have done well retaining Vic Country kids as most of them say, they board for high school and so are used to living away from home from a young age.

Any who come with a gf already we'll leave to Blakely

Has anyone crunched the numbers? I think it seems like a Vic problem, but approximately half the draftees are from Victoria. I am not sure if the ratio is greater or lesser than non-Vic players. Hately was a first round pick for GWS, he bailed after two years, went back to Adelaide via the PSD. Dawson going back to SA, after publicly telling Swans supporters they had nothing to worry about.

You might be right, there might be more from Vic, metro specifically. It would be interesting to see the numbers.

I know people talk about how good we are at retaining Vic Metro kids but other than Brayshaw (and Cerra) do we have any others on our list currently?

Maybe Sam Switkowski but he was a mature age pick up from Box Hill.

The rest...

Mundy - Murray
Serong - Gippsland
Tucker - North Ballarat
Schultz - Williamstown
Sturt - Dandenong
Taberner - Murray
Treacy - Bendigo
Darcy - Geelong
Meek - GWV Rebels
Ryan - Coburg
Young - Dandenong

All Vic Country aren't they?

edit - thanks to Docker82 for pointing out Coburg and Williamstown are Vic Metro but obviously Ryan and Schultz were mature age recruits like Switkowski so should be thought of similarly in this convo. Schultz played for Bendigo in TAC which is Vic Country. Ryan played for Calder Cannons.

Does this get Cerra done?

6, 25 and future 2nd for Cerra & 27?

Freo use 25 for Clark.

Then can trade there 2 2nd rounders to get back into this years draft. Brisbane & Gold Coast would be interested in trading 18 & 19 into next year.

Williamstown and Coburg are both Metro based clubs. Ryan is Metro originally, Schultz is from a border town spending time in Victoria and NSW.

Id be careful calling the Dandenong boys Country. I think you’ll find they’re barely more than 50-100 km from the CBD. Mindset wise they could see themselves as Melbourne people but maybe not.

I think Sturt and Young would be fine with being called Vic Country because they played for Vic Country.

Ryan and Schultz both mature agers like Switkowski so doesn't really change anything. The reality is once we lose Cerra we will only have one Vic Metro player drafted as an 18yo on our list (and he's got big WA ties). So us claiming we've been great at retaining Vic Metro is pretty misleading.

I'm not completely against drafting Vic Metro but like you'd expect us to weight WA slightly ahead on relatively even prospects, I'd similarly weight VicM under the rest.
